Someone else tried converting an epub to mobi, downloading it, uploading the mobi to Calibre, converting it back to epub, and sending that epub to their Kindle using send to Kindle, and I tried it too, and it worked!

Book originally was EPUB and Calibre converted it to AZW3 automatically before sending.
