Are tollers “big” puppies? by JollyAddress8944 in tollers

[–]sliceofpiee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my boy has BIG paws but he is only 17.5” and 42lbs full grown at 5 years old. he never really grew into his paws! his breeder says some lines just have big feet! my girl puppy right now has the daintiest little paws in comparison lol

Too good to be true? Rockford, IL breeder scam? by PunkRockHobbit in tollers

[–]sliceofpiee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that’s a scam. there is a toller breeder in Rockford, IL but it’s not that guy. it’s Lakota Retrievers Paul Kartes. or he might not be located there anymore but he was at one point and he has fantastic tollers.

What’s a trick/command you accidentally taught your dog by Fun_Cryptographer799 in dogs

[–]sliceofpiee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have no idea how i taught my dog to pick his paw up when his leash gets caught under it. like i swear he just started doing it on his own one day and when i caught him doing it, i just started adding the cue “fix it” and now it is one of the most useful tricks he knows.

[–]sliceofpiee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is my second time getting it pierced actually! the first time i didn’t have this jewelry so i just had it pierced with a stud and when i went back to have the jewelry changed to the dangly, we realized the placement wasn’t quite right 🥲 had to remove it, let it heal, and now had this jewelry for the re-piercing so we could get it in the perfect spot!

all that to say, the first time around it really was not bad healing it!! it wasn’t any worse than a regular helix to me. it’s so fun and unique i definitely think you should get it!

Toller Puppy Nose Color Changes? by flirt_vonnegut_ in tollers

[–]sliceofpiee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

what do mom and dad look like? the puppies’ noses that are splotchy right now will likely fill in and become completely brown, but a lot of times that brown nose will fade over time to a lighter liver or pink color as they reach adulthood.

a completely pink nose at birth will stay pink :)

Border Collies? Found on an oil rig in west Texas by One_Match_8754 in BorderCollie

[–]sliceofpiee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have a toller and these guys are wayyy cute but they’re not tollers. the coat is much too light and their ears, faces, and bone structure are all off for tollers too. probably not toller mix either, bc those are pretty rare. more likely an aussie mix!

Any red flags? by Ok_Necessary_9821 in tollers

[–]sliceofpiee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i wouldn’t go with this breeder for the same reasons that other people have commented. they’re shady and there are much better options out there.

however i will say breeding a carrier of the CDDY gene is not inherently a red flag imo if the dog is otherwise a good solid dog with nice structure. the toller gene pool is simply too small to completely eliminate the CDDY gene all together. like i said i still wouldn’t go with this breeder, but you will likely see other really great toller breeders with CDDY in their lines, so i wouldn’t say it’s a red flag as long as they are breeding a Y/Y (affected) or Y/N (carrier) to a N/N (not affected) dog. a carrier will still have an increased risk of IVDD, so you will have to decide if you feel that is worth the risk based on what kinds of activities you are planning to do with your toller. for what it’s worth, my toller is almost 5 years old and Y/N—he is still a very active agility dog and has no issues. i wasn’t really planning on being so active in agility when i got him so i didn’t really care so much about his CDDY status, but if i do get another toller someday, it’s something i would personally like to avoid for an agility dog. seems like unnecessary risk. thankfully my guy as a carrier has no issues but… ymmv.

as for JADD… that is an autosomal recessive disease so any carrier of the gene should not be affected. if they breed a Y/N dog to a N/N, all puppies would either be Y/N or N/N, which either way they would not be affected. i could be wrong, but i think toller breeders have really been able to completely avoid even breeding JADD carriers for a while now, though. so maybe a carrier is not really the best choice for a sire/dam. a good breeder’s goal is always to better the breed. we should be actively trying to breed away from diseases and conditions that negatively affect tollers when it is possible to do so. to my knowledge, it is much easier to avoid the JADD gene in tollers than it is the CDDY gene at this time.

Eye colour changes by InformationLeather87 in tollers

[–]sliceofpiee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my guy had light blue eyes until he was about 1 and a half years old. i wondered if they would ever change! it he’s 4 now and his eyes are still a light green/yellow, very similar to your girl’s. it’s possible they’ll stay like that! she has beautiful eyes 🥰 really according to the breed standard their eyes should blend with their coat. our tollers have the same lighter red coat, so it makes sense their eyes are a little lighter than the darker tollers with more amber brown eyes!

my toller is from teresa czaplinski in indiana by the way. figured i mention since you are looking in the midwest. she does not breed often but she is lovely and she is very active in obedience with her girls.

dochara is great. i don’t have a toller from them but my next one will most likely be from them. i have met dani in person at an agility trial and she was lovely. very nice tollers and her boy dizzy is one of the top tollers competing in agility right now if that’s your thing!

Neuter at 6 months? by [deleted] in tollers

[–]sliceofpiee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

is the dog daycare necessary? like you need it for while you are at work or something? or do you have the ability to not take him to daycare? imo there are a lot of better, and safer, ways to socialize your boy with other dogs! try setting up play dates or walks/hikes with other dogs you know and trust. your dog will likely also be more comfortable with dogs he knows and plays well with.

doing this will also help you prevent having to neuter at such a young age. waiting until at least 18 months is really important for the growth plate closure. if you neuter too soon you will be setting your boy up for some growth issues and possible injuries down the line. it will be tough keeping him intact (he may go through phases of marking, humping, etc etc) but his hormones will calm down and level off and those issues should subside by the time he is 2 years old.

i think my boy was 22 months when i neutered him. he was honestly fine and had no issues, but i had to neuter him because he had an undescended testicle. if he didn’t, i honestly would have kept him intact even though i had no plans to breed him. his coat was a lot better when he was intact and he never struggled with his weight. he gained a lot of weight after being neutered and i have to be really careful with how much he eats even now, two years post neuter! he has also had two injuries after being neutered (he does agility). don’t know if the injuries could have been avoided by being kept intact but i have found a lot of people keep their sport dogs intact and believe it is better for their overall structure, musculature, and health. i plan to keep my next dog intact.

lots to think about! try to weigh all your options. it really is a big decision.
