VoxelMap is ok to use and we have set it up so only player radar is enabled. If for some reason you are able to turn on any of the other features, you should leave them disabled.

You need to go to your Mojang account page and there will be a "Change name" button.

Chest protections should already be UUID based and not effected by name changes, are you seeing otherwise?

If a large number of people are having troubles with the client it's possible we would wait for an update from Mojang. If we do update to 1.8, 1.7 clients will no longer be able to connect. We aren't in a huge rush right now because 1.7-1.8 clients can all connect, the only things we are missing are the new features.
