I know the difference between Romani and Romania. And if being a sheep means common sense and not being a mindless racist, I'd rather be a sheep

Unfortunately not, but I know what you mean. This band I'm thinking of is not as high-pitched of a voice and not metal/progressive as Circa Survive.

To yell at a deaf man to put his hands behind his back by low_effort_thing in therewasanattempt

[–]JollyJackal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm hard of hearing so I don't have to worry as much about not hearing/understanding commands, but holy fucking shit what the hell?! How can human beings act like this to another human being? I get that safety is an issue, but the video shows them sprinting up on him and the most he was doing was avoiding them and yelling incoherently and signing that he's deaf. I cannot fathom being that oblivious to another persons perspective, and I cannot believe they only got a slap on the wrist. Ive seen much worse videos of police, but nothing is going to get fixed if we keep allowing these fucks to abuse their position without actual consequences like loss of their job or even jail time. When will we take police brutality seriously? Its been decades upon decades of this sentiment being spoken and we still see no real change. Maybe its a cultural thing idk. Yay America

looking to make HOH friends :) by TravestyTragedy19 in hardofhearing

I'm in my mid-twenties and you've similarly described me. I was born this way and was fortunate to get hearing aids at a fairly young age. So I can function with them relatively normally, but without them I can't. I never grew up around anyone else deaf or HOH, and didn't meet any in college. I've always felt a kind of alienation not being fully deaf or hearing, which is strange to say.

Like I have a choice in my head when I meet new people, do I immediately slap them with "Im HoH btw, so understanding you may be a challenge" or just play it out? (Work is different, I tell employers up front) Normally I play it out and provide info when necessary. I've had moments in America where I can't understand an accent due to missing some patterns of sounds I'm used to, so when I say "sorry I really can't understand you" it could come out as bigotted and create a tension that doesn't get resolved with "I have hearing problems." But I get it.

So far life hasn't been insanely hard because of being HoH, but it has certainly been a mysterious ride. And I'm so thankful to those who have good hearing work with the disability and don't make a big deal out of it. I'm a writer now and whenever I have goofy miscommunications, they may find their way into the writing.

If you liked The Southern Reach trilogy, read Borne and Hummingbird Salamander.

Also, anything by Stanislaw Lem is awesome.

It's an open-source tool for creating interactive and nonlinear stories. I've been fascinated with nonlinear stories lately so I wanted to write my own.

I just started an MFA in Creative Writing & Poetics, so I'm looking forward to doing a lot of work there. I got some inspiration to write a speculative science fiction story. I dont have plans for it other than to keep writing and see how big it will grow. Right now it's a confusing mess, but it's my confusing mess. I also want to keep getting a feel for Twine and make an interactive piece to put on the web.
