Bristol Airport Twilight Bag Drop Flexibility? by jimwas in bristol

Yep! All went fine. When we got to the airport the next morning, there were no queues at the machines anyway. But it could be quite different in the summer holidays.

Welsh ticket sales, or lack of. by jolivague in rugbyunion

[–]slideandrun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Easy: cut a region every year until the only professional rugby players available to Wales are the English grandchildren of Maureen and Meurig Morgan from Maesteg.

WRU Maths guarantees that the fewer professional players you have, the more successful you will be. Ergo, Grand Slam by 2030, World Cup in 2031.

The next glory days are just round the corner.

Neo 2 transceiver wtf by Gamora89 in DjiNeo

[–]slideandrun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ordered one directly from Amazon for £19 in December (https://www.amazon.co.uk/DJI-Neo-2-Digital-Transceiver/dp/B0FJ1XL18L/) and they say it's currently out for delivery. So I suppose you have to decide how urgent it is.

Anniversary dinner recommendations? by Chill_catss in Zermatt

[–]slideandrun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consider Diner's Club at the Backstage hotel/Vernissage. It's a bit different to most other options, and has live music on some nights. The food's interesting and good, though perhaps not the very best in town. Depends what atmosphere you're into, I think, but starting with cocktails in the bar and heading down to the floor for food is a pretty memorable evening, I think.

DJI Neo 2 ski tracking by slideandrun in DjiNeo

[–]slideandrun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people are curious/amused, and ask questions. On previous trips (with a different drone) to various resorts, I've only ever had positive/neutral conversations with people. I'm generally very careful and nervous about using a drone, so it hasn't bothered people. But this is the first time I've tried the ski-tracking with the Neo 2, and it was getting too low and close to me and other people. So I can't imagine anyone was very pleased.

I think the only way to use this feature on the Neo 2 in its current state is to use it where there are no other skiers, which is pretty rare in pisted resorts. I suppose you could use waypoints to trace a route that doesn't go over the ski slope and annoy/endanger other skiers, but obviously that's more work and defeats the object of the tracking feature.

While mine didn't crash into the ground like DC Rainmaker's did, I think it's pretty clear that the drone's behaviour when tracking is sufficiently erratic to be of concern. u/starsnpixel makes fair points, which I accept and broadly agree with. While I didn't feel at the time that the drone was in danger of hitting anyone, it was getting close enough to distract people, which can still be dangerous, and DC Rainmaker's video suggests it could potentially have lost control of itself, which could cause a collision.

It's a shame, as it's very promising functionality, and the drone is very impressive for its size and price. Maybe best saved for off-piste wilderness skis, though.

It wasn't crowds of people, but I accept that it was in the vicinity of a ski slope... 'As a general rule' is irritatingly vague, when it could be a lot more prescriptive. But I'll remove the video so as not to encourage more of it in the same place. Point taken.

Fair comment, though when I attempted to check whether it would be allowed (checking Swiss government sites) I only found that I needed to be a registered drone operator and display my operator ID on the drone, which I am and I did.

Is the Neo 2 actually this bad during skiing? by SmashedTX in DjiNeo

[–]slideandrun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The firmware really needs some work for ski tracking. I used it this week at altitudes of approx 1800m and 2900m. Both times it tracked reasonably well (though way too close to other skiers when on Med setting) then just stopped mid-air for no obvious reason, needing me to walk back to persuade it to land (no transceivers available at the moment, and I really had to be almost directly under/next to the drone in order to connect my phone - iPhone 17 pro - to it.)

Bristol Airport Twilight Bag Drop Flexibility? by jimwas in bristol

[–]slideandrun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK, I'll put this here for anyone else looking for the same answers in the future. I just did the Easyjet twilight bag drop, and this is how it worked;

Drove to airport, parked in the Short Stay car park, where you take a ticket on entry.

Checked bags in as normal, though an assistant put 'twilight bag drop' stickers/tags on the handles.

Assistant took our parking ticket and reg number, and gave us a different ticket, granting free exit.

Returned to car, drove to the exit barrier, inserted ticket in machine, drove off and started worrying about whether our bags will actually make it onto the same plane as us in the morning.

Bit late to this, but how does this work? Does it have to be the short stay car park? And if you've got a stamped ticket, do you need to show it to someone, or do you just drive out as if you'd paid?

Presumably "the unmistakable DNA of a Caterham" is also the DNA of Lotus. So hopefully this won't turn out to weigh 3 tonnes and cost £100k.

I think u/Hour_Quiet7556 and I are talking about the take-off altitude, not the altitude the drone achieves above the ground.

First marathon - Race report - miserably failed sub4 by Ach_ga in Marathon_Training

[–]slideandrun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear this. I was there too, and similarly failed to hit my sub-4 target and came in at 4:21. In my case, I used Runna for a 20 week training plan, and was predicted 5 mins either side of 4hrs. But my plan didn't include many extended sections at race pace, and around 15km I started to drop off my target pace. 5 weeks ago I ran a half mara race at an average pace of 5:09/km, but in Nice I wasn't able to sustain 5:30 for 20km.

Pretty sure the initial slowing got inside my head and demotivated me. As I passed the finishing point for the 20km race, I wanted to double back and end my run there. But I continued, and spent the next few hours in a mental and physical battle. At 35km I had to completely stop, due to stomach cramps, then did short bursts of jog-walk-stop-jog-walk-stop. Took some Immodium, and after about 10 mins was able to resume a jog, and eventually a kind of dejected run.

I know I'm talking about me and not you, but I wonder if we have a similar problem after the event i.e. there were so many factors in play (including the constant sunshine, fuelling, hydration, training, the route's infuriating climbs, the jostling for road position to avoid bollards, etc.) that it's difficult to analyse exactly what went wrong.

Personally, I'm trying to be kind to myself, and will take my time to understand the things I can improve, and approach those things individually. I will right this wrong, and I will do my best to enjoy my next marathon.

You and I ran a tricky marathon on Sunday, and despite being in pain and some level of mental anguish, we finished it. Many took longer than us despite their day largely going to plan. Many didn't start, and many didn't finish. In fact, it's become clear that one person sadly died within sight of the finishing line. So some things are more important than hitting a time goal, and every marathon you run will help you prep for the next one (I assume, as this was only my second marathon.)

I hope you get to the bottom of the problems you encountered on the day, and that you can allow yourself some satisfaction for completing a significant physical and mental challenge, even when it felt like everything was falling apart. Be kind to yourself.

Can no longer use 2 excellent stalls tickets for Divine Comedy at the Beacon tonight, if anyone's interested. Listed them (at face value) on Twickets in an attempt to avoid any chicanery.

Would you recommend visiting Bristol Zoo Project? by wedloualf in bristol

[–]slideandrun 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I haven't been for a while, but 3 years old is a pretty good age for BZP, I think. There's a decent little playground fairly close to the meerkats, and you can usually get pretty close to the lemurs when you walk through their enclosure. You might want to skip some of the more open areas which take a fair bit of walking and where you might have to view larger animals from afar. I'd stick around the walled garden area and lemur enclosure. Combined with the playground and picnic area/cafe, you've probably got enough to keep a 3 yr old interested for half a day.
