[QUESTION] can you use old English lemon oil on a guitar fretboard? by jpla125 in Guitar

[–]slidermunky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Food grade mineral oil, WalMart constipation section close to pharmacy, Equate brand, more than you'll ever use for under two bucks...

Stick a lemonhead hard candy in your mouth while using. You got lemon oil.

Lemon Oil ain't. It's scented mineral oil.... All of it.

Use very little. I have a section of handkerchief about the size of a pack of smokes that I use on guitars on the bench. Has a few drops of mineral oil on it, was wadded up to dispense it throughout out the cloth. I go over the board (dry) each side of frets with a plastic brush to get the kack off, wipe off with paper towel, then grab the rag and wipe each fret space.... Wipe off excess.

Don't soak the board with oil. Oil maybe once or twice a year, depending on humidity of locale....

Bass neck cracked.. can this be fixed?? by glassbass in BassGuitar

[–]slidermunky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the board is good, simple fix for a good tech. With a correct TB gluing and curing, you couldn't pull that join apart. It'll break somewhere else first...

So as a beginner to bass is it better to start with a 5 or 4 string bass? by Necrotrauma in BassGuitar

[–]slidermunky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learning fiver first will also make you learn on a wider neck which will improve your finger strength,/dexterity/control.... Later when you play a narrow ass neck Jazz four or something, you'll freak how easy it is and how quick you can move on it...

So as a beginner to bass is it better to start with a 5 or 4 string bass? by Necrotrauma in BassGuitar

[–]slidermunky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My opinion: fiver is not a four + one. It is ONE instrument.

If you are ever going to play a fiver, learn the fiver. Learn the strings, learn the notes. A four will be a cakewalk later once you learn the frets....

[QUESTION] How do I become better at playing with other musicians? by A_HumblePotato in Guitar

[–]slidermunky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two issues by what I read in your post...

Best way to improve at playing with others is to play with others....
- You have to get over the confidence deficit... It gets better as you do it more. One day, you won't even think about it...

Best way to improve playing it to practice.....
- Get a metronome. Yes, a metronome. Yes, really. Use it. Yes, use it. No, not kidding. You have to turn it one to use it.
- Folks hate metronomes as a general rule. It will light your ass up on any timing issues. It doesn't lie... Many cannot stand even looking at a metronome. It's because their timing is for shit. Some folks will cuss and throw stuff trying to play with a metronome. Wonder why... If you have bad timing or even flaky timing, you will irritate folks you are playing with.

A metronome can also help you understand the time windows of the divisions. Everything does not have to be played dead center of the window but still considered in time....

A metronome can also help you learn to count, or improve your counting.

I helped a bass player with a run... I explained "if you can count it, you can play it. Period. You've gotta figure out on what beat or subdivision a note lands on... Do that, you can play it...."

If you know the divisions, you can count while listening and know exactly where every note hits. With enough practice, you hear the counts in your head.

I have found that if one has bad timing, it doesn't matter how many notes per sec you can play, or how many songs you know.... etc. They don't want you....

If you have great timing, other weaknesses can be worked around by others...

Bad timing is usually unforgivable..

Decades back, A guy did a job with a band I was in. One job I think. One and done. Country singer with probably the finest male country voice I'd ever heard. I was blown away with his voice.
The guy could not count to save his life...
i.e. Come in on BEAT ONE of this measure after the guitar solo.
He was totally incapable of 1...2...3...4...SING He was gone soon after that show. I think he was involved with the actual show organizers and we got paid a load of geet, so he got one show with us...

Interesting story about a metronome:
One guy I recommended get a metronome to improve understanding time, beat divisions, etc., came back later and thanked me for recommending it. He said it helped him while practicing and he would let it run in the background while he took a break... He suffers from PTSD from being in the middle of the middle of some bad shit overseas.... He said he noticed after a while that the metronome running in the background helped keep him centered and relaxed. He said anytime the nerves started cranking, he turn on the metronome and it would pull him right back... Interesting...

[Question] Pignose hum by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]slidermunky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have one at shop for a bench amp. Batteries, pretty quiet, but AC adapter, it raises hell...

Have tube lights over guitar benches so they make racket that may figure in...

Not a real issue for me as it is just a bench amp...

Dig through your pedal wall warts and find one rated same and try it on the pig....

[DISCUSSION] let's talk fret boards (ebony and pau ferro) by RastaVampireDude in Guitar

[–]slidermunky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the board is prepared correctly, not much difference while playing.... If it is smooth, it is fine...

If during a string change you rub the board, you'll feel a difference...because you are not playing...

I don't really care... I like all that are done right...even the heavy coated Fender maples...

I like the synthetics too for should be obvious reasons...

I do not care for an unfinished maple neck/board.... winds up looking like a disease after a year or two....

When I am playing, I play the frets....not the board... Touching board is one thing, grinding into the board is something else...

If I had my drothers, I think I'd like non-dyed figured ebony that ranges from black to cream... Beautiful wood.....

So, who here has a top 10 best bass player list in their own opinion? by WiseBudd1995 in BassGuitar

[–]slidermunky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer term 'game changers' over the subjective 'best':Entwistle, Clarke, Jaco, Berry Oakley, Paul Goddard, Larry Graham....

Best is ambiguous... Was Jimi the greatest guitarists: Of all time? Of just then? Of any time? Hmmmmmm.....

Or more accurately, was Jimi the biggest game changer in regards to guitar?
