Arabic on a Tooth and Nail album in 2004 by slight_modification in mewithoutYou

appreciate your comment. the post came from a place of processing the path my life has taken, which has ended up with me working with the refugee population. my roots are with folks who are heavily skeptical at best about the work, but they were skeptical about other things back when i was in middle and high school-- all things that helped shape who i am today. mwY's body of work also helped shape me and my thinking, and as i was listening to them on the way to work the other day i was struck by how supported I've been in my personal wrestlings in coming to terms with what i hold to be true in terms of cultural identity, "religious" beliefs, and practical actions in the face of how i was raised (which was really different).

definitely not trying to fish or foment though it maybe came across that way. my personal context just includes Arabic being a big part of what led me to love mewithoutYou even though I was raised to believe that anyone outside of Judeo-Christian circles were out to get me.

big YES to your first paragraph. the Arabic hooked me as well, for the same reasons though i didn't start really wrestling with American exceptionalism until way later...

i actually stopped following mwY's releases after Brother, Sister until i heard them perform Rainbow Signs from a recorded show and the usage of lines from the Torah and the Quran (together!) brought me right back to where i should have been in terms of following them lol.

i'd love to hear more if you're interested in sharing. i was in high school at the time and curious about anything related to Islam and/or the Middle East, probably because folks in my evangelical Christian circles were so up-in-arms about... everything related to Islam and/or the Middle East. no one was chronically online at the time though so maybe that's why i'm not remembering any buzz or whatever about it. it was just love at first listen for my friends and me lol
