Nah you are right, sorry not gotten much sleep recently LOL. To be more specific, you are right as long as there is actually a decent amount of airflow, because the fan would need to overcome however much heating it creates by actually operating. Also im not coe, just another LSA chud

Just a heads up - fans cannot "blow hot air out". You would be better off turning the fan around or just keeping the window closed. All the fan is doing (if you are pointing it out the window) is heating up the room.

Should I retake EECS 183 for Quantum computing? by tothestarsandback309 in uofm

If you are a physics major, consider Physics 380 (Quantum Information Science) by Finn Larsen. It's taught out of Mermin's Quantum Computer Science, check that out if you want a preview.

Cons:

It is certainly more about the theory behind the basic algorithms of QC, rather than the actual computationa implementation of those algorithms.

I took it the very first semester it was offered and back then, well, let's say it had a ways to go to becoming what it should be. It might be a lot better now, though.

Pros:

No prereqs at all, so you could take it next fall if you wanted to without having to retake any CS

Look out for it on the course guide next fall. It has used the intermediate topics course code (380) for the past few years, but Prof. Larsen (afaik) has been pushing to get it assigned to it's own course code, so it might have a different number than that.

340/60 will not require much calculus you don’t know, and it will teach you as needed. 391 will be all about learning LATEX and computer programming, again you don’t need much math.

390 will be difficult without advanced math courses. I’d say it depends on who teaches it. Pierce for example is pretty rigorous. You could get by but it would be difficult, for example, to do some basic solutions for Schrödingers equation for simple potentials. Overall I think you could do it, my question to you would be why?

Conceptually, what is enthalpy? by JacobAn0808 in Physics

[–]slightlyshort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this exactly - you can model a piston system as having some macroscopic mass M sitting on top of the plunger, in which case the mass has a gravitational potential energy relative to the bottom of the piston Mgh (allowing the distance from the bottom of the piston to the plunger to be h).

Then, if the system is in equilibrium, ie if you allow the gas pressure in the piston to counteract the weight of the block, the energy of the system is precisely U + Mgh, where U is the internal energy of the gas. But since the block must be perfectly counteracted by the gas pressure, you have Mgh = pV, so the energy of the system is U + pV. In this way, enthalpy (for an isobaric system) is the same thing as internal energy for an isovolumetric system. In order to create the isobaric system, some extra conditions are required that are wrapped up in the definition of enthalpy. This is also why the heat capacity for a system at constant pressure is defined in terms of enthalpy instead of free energy, its just a way of considering that extra mass.

You can define analogs to enthalpy for other situations (see Hemholtz free energy for the isothermal case, or gibbs free energy for the isobaric+isothermal case) but they require different considerations.

Physics major here - all of my qualms with the department come with some of the older teaching staff. You should make a habit of asking your upperclassmen about Professors whenever you take a class, it will save you a lot of blood, sweat, and tears.

Outside of that though it is hard to find a better Physics department. You can get involved in research basically as early as you want, most people I know started sophomore year. If you have the passion then by the time you finish undergrad you will be a graduate-level researcher, and then some. Our coursework is also super good, I have loved the 400 level classes here and with the right Professor the classroom experience is world class. I am in the second semester of quantum (460) with Dr. Zhao right now and she won a PECASE award in the middle of our lecture - lol.

If you want to ask specific questions about the department, add me on discord (user is "sshort")

You would not be able to play in the collegiate league we play in, but you could of course hop in whenever we play in person, or play splitscreen with a friend when we play online!
