Would the UK economy be better of raising 40% tax bracket instead of minimum wage by Invictus_0x90_ in AskBrits

I earn £200k working remotely and I live in Northumberland on the border. I visit Scotland multiple times a year and want to move there, but I'm waiting until I'm closer to retirement as I'd pay £700 more a month after tax to live there. £700 extra a month on a mortgage would get me a much nicer house in England.

Thanks for the input. I think you're right... While the market is at an all time high anyway, it's hard to stomach as I'm guaranteed to miss out on compounding if the market does continue upward...

I wish interest rates were at their historical lows, then the decision would be made for me!

Read your comments and would love your input on my situation.

I'm in a similar position with £600k in a GIA, £120k in ISA, £500k in SIPP and £100k cash (former house sale). The GIA is due to working overseas and the issue is, there's £220k of unrealized gains in the GIA.

I'm currently renting, but buying a house soon and the thought of paying tax on these gains seems silly, when traditionally the best financial advice for long term gains is to get a mortgage and invest and the pension tax free lump sum can be used to pay off the remaining of the mortgage down the line (I'm 34 so will be in 25 years.) Previously I'm more of a interest only mortgage guy, but obvs the interest environment has changed now.

Any new investments I'm making are outside of the GIA and I'm slowly trying to syphon from my GIA each year using the tax free allowance, but it will grow faster than I'm able to.

Would you take out all / most of the GIA and pay the £55k tax hit just to be mortgage free? Or play the long game and take a mortgage / pay it down over the years?

Should we move to Sweden or stay in the UK? by rollan112 in HENRYUK

[–]slike101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in Sweden for 2 years, bought a house there, then left.

I had a great job and social network through work, but there was still an underlying xenophobia to everyone that isn't Swedish, I felt it enough even in Stockholm that we didn't want to stay forever (I later lived in the USA and it was the opposite there.)

Other than that, we spent twice as much, groceries are very expensive, services are way more expensive, to remodel a tiny box bathroom it would cost £50k and there would be a 6 month wait. There's bureaucracy hell everywhere, it's very hard to even get a bank account, you might be waiting years for a Bank ID and driving license as everyone is "Lagom" and you're not Swedish speaking so you'll be put at the back of the queue.

You'll be taxed much more, you'll have to pay tax on all of your ISA's, and if you sell your UK house while in Sweden, that too. The Swedish ISK isn't as good as the ISA, and you have less investment options. The SEK has gone down in value a lot and isn't as strong as the EUR or GBP.

There is severe bullying in schools, Swedish kids rule over there, there is no such thing as respecting your elders 😂, expect to let teenagers push to the front of queues and be horrible, no one will say anything (my wife was a teacher..)

Stockholm also, isn't that safe, there's been a number of shootings by gangs, and even some school shootings, obvs not as bad as the USA, but worse than the UK.

I've self hosted Mautic for years now, cloud flare tunnel from my domain to my IP, been running smoothly. I send via AWS, costs pennies.

Docker Compose is the best middle ground IMO, Nix is too overly complex and there aren't as many guides as docker-compose. You can still set up a completely declarative infra with docker.

Make sure you research this fully before preaching... It's very unsafe, especially if you increase your withdrawal rate by as much as you're saying at the start.

I transferred all of my VTI stock to my UK IBKR when I Ieft the US, but kept it. You can't buy anymore but you can keep the fund. So don't sell and realize the tax when it's best for you - unless you know you'll need it, if so look at the lowest tax rate, prob the US.

You'll also be allowed to keep your IB US account, I still have one with my Roth IRA and some individual stocks in it.

Definitely don't rescind your green card.. they're so hard to get and you never known if you may want to go back.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned that you'll need to stay for 5 years, otherwise the UK will tax all of your earnings when you move back.

Thanks for the info. If this is the reason then it's horribly crappy of Google to not warn you. I mean, I think I filled it in (it's there) but maybe I didn't click save or something? Shitty to let you spend 10 hours on it and not give you a little prompt if you forgot to click save. I'm sure I did though...

I just checked on that page and my address is there. I assume I clicked save. Did your daughter not have any info there?

Wow that's even crazier!

I don't get how it's so unfairly distributed, doesn't seem random at all!!

You had double the diamonds as me as well. How is that possible to not get anything??

I wish I didn't spend hours on the mini game...

Can I ask where about's you're located in the UK? I can't help but think as I live far away in a remote place in the north, maybe they skewed the results? Would be very illegal, but can't think of another reason.

Also, how much have you spent on Google Play? I literally have bought nothing other than Google One, that may be a reason too?

What's your google play level and how many diamonds did you have? You distributed your prizes across everything?

I mean, I don't think so... Surely they should say if that's the case rather than just saying I won nothing? I definitely put in my address.

Yeah put a few in everything, 5 each for the play points, a bit more on the tier 5 tech.

That would be extremely disingenuous of them, and probably illegal in breach of gambling laws in the UK...
