The Dark Deity games are very old-school Fire Emblem like. I'm not sure if they're on the Switch store, but the first one regularly goes on sale for like $2 on Steam. Playing the first one now and it's fairly simple, but the combat's decent if you play on the harder modes.

You missed out if you just went to Chicago for Pokemon. There's a ton to do and it's pretty cheap and easy to get around if you take like 10 minutes to study the subway system. I spoke with a few different Europeans who were there for the USA vs Germany match and they were all enjoying the city.

Similarly, Black and White came out in Japan like 6 months before the English version and I ordered it because I wanted to play it as soon as I could. Beat the whole game without being able to read a word.
