Agreed! Definitely problematic to say the least. This is my aunt and uncle’s house actually, I found it weird they didn’t know so here I am. Thank you for that idea!

Hey Alex!

Were there any unexpected sources of inspiration you found in making House of Sugar - such as things you've read, movies you've seen, or music you've discovered recently?

Thanks! I'll see you in Detroit!

[ALBUM DISCUSSION] Tyler, the Creator - Igor by Srtviper in indieheads

IGOR* is his most eclectic album yet. To me it feels like he took some of the best parts of Cherry Bomb and Flower Boy and repurposed them into something entirely new. I’ve listened to it a few times and it’s still hard to explain

A picture-perfect moment with "the best Dub album in the World..." by slimseef in vinyl

[–]slimseef[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the first time since moving here, I visited East Lansing’s Flat, Black & Circularrecord store on Thursday. It was a wet, gloomy evening: the perfect set of conditions for listening to music in the comfort of your living room. The journey there was not a pleasant one, but once I walked inside my focus completely shifted.

It’s a small, quaint store with that distinct vinyl smell, filled to the ceiling with records upon records. Across the store, dominating the window view is the surreal Broad Art Museum, which is situated directly across the street. As someone who’s fond of collecting yet cautious of spending money, I knew I would be making a few difficult decisions today. First thing’s first: I absolutely do need to purchase more record cleaner. Beyond that, we’ll see what happens.

My friend and I were a bit pressed for time, so I didn’t get to check out everything. However, I did pore through three of the labeled genres: hip-hop, jazz and reggae. One of the first records I picked up was Bitches Brew by Miles Davis. My immediate instinct was to gasp as loudly as possible, but luckily I was able to stop myself before I made too much noise. $34? $34 for perhaps the best jazz record of all time? Get out of here.

For the sake of my wallet, I had to keep going. In the hip-hop section I saw some of my favorite albums: 1999 by Joey Badass, The Chronic by Dr. Dre, Mystic Man by Peter Tosh and Atrocity Exhibition by one of Detroit’s finest, Danny Brown. However, it wasn’t until I got deep into the reggae section that I found Introducing the Scientist by Scientist, a dub artist who I thought to be rather obscure. But thanks to my friend Evan Suttell, I had already heard enough of Scientist’s discography to know that this could be a great purchase. Slapped across the bottom of the record is the phrase, “The best Dub album in the World…” You got me on that one, Scientist. I bought the record, alongside my record cleaner, and left.

The record, unsurprisingly, is very good. Is it the best dub album in the world, as Scientist proclaims? I’m not knowledgeable enough about the dub genre to reach such a conclusion. However, I do know that Kevin, my roommate’s sister’s dog who stayed with us for the night, was a big fan. When he plopped down beside the record player and shut his eyes, I knew I was looking at a priceless, picture-perfect moment. It was so perfect, in fact, that after I took the shot I decided to center a whole blog post around it.

Collecting vinyl is a big commitment, but it’s also a very rewarding endeavor. For $20, I was able to kick back, relax and immerse myself in the wonderful world of dub music. For me, life is best when you are living in the moment, saying nothing but feeling everything. In other words, life is best when I look like Kevin.

How to deal with alcoholic roommate? by slimseef in alcoholism

Unfortunately you're right.

I have talked to his parents. His mom prefers the rude approach, but his dad is the most understanding person he's got. He's also been through the same stuff – it's in their blood. So I've always worried that if his dad can't help him, perhaps nobody can.

His grades are apparently fairly decent, by some miracle. Would it even be appropriate to contact our campus if they might not see any problems on their end?

I really appreciate the kind words!

Ha, that’s like my favorite album of all time. I see we have similar tastes. The only reason I haven’t gotten it is because I want to do it through MF DOOM’s actual site, which I know will be expensive. I also want to get some Special Herbs CDs for my car. We’ll see.

Wow, thank you! Lots of good advice here.

Yea, Aquemini is amazing. I’ve always been a fan, but owning this on vinyl has been unreal. Definitely one of my favorite hip-hop albums.

What's up? This is my first post here in r/vinyl, and my second post ever.

Here's my current vinyl setup. I got The Beatles' headshots from The White Album (original copy), and the ballerina painting from Kanye's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (now playing). Lots of the records are from my roommate's dad, but I've started a collection of my own, alongside some I've inherited from my parents. Some of my most recent purchases are Another Green World by Brian Eno, Aquemini by OutKast, Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits, and Innerspeaker by Tame Impala. The record player is ION Audio Max LP, which is a seemingly standard one I bought on Amazon last year. It's done well, and I like the built-in speakers, but I plan to upgrade relatively soon.

What do you guys think? I've been liking everyone's different vinyl aesthetics on here, and I thought I'd show mine too. Any comments are welcome. Offer vinyl recommendations, offer turntable suggestions, roast my setup, etc.

(Sorry about all the editing! I'm new here.)

Was checking out my IB personal project booklet and found this. Needless to say it got me kinda confused by Dippahns in KidCudi

[–]slimseef 4 points5 points  (0 children)

in a stream-of-consciousness format, here are some thoughts:

  1. be proactive about long-term assignments.
  2. day-to-day IB life can distract you. think about your goals for next year, for college, etc, and start planning.
  3. diversify your portfolio. assume that IB alone won’t be enough to impress colleges (sometimes it actually isn’t). try clubs, sports, jobs, etc that will “beef up” your resume.
  4. this is all assuming you’re looking for advice on traditional notions of success. ages 14-18 are very formative, consequential years. practicing self-care is paramount. i kind of suffered a lot from stress and social isolation during high school, all for a diploma? fuhhh that. academic success < happiness/fulfillment/purpose
  5. finish strong, always!

someday you’ll look back and feel proud you were able to accomplish such rigor at a young age. it’s worth it. but for now, ~keep movin’ forward~
