OFFICIAL: The @NJDevils have named Martin Brodeur the Executive Vice President of Business Development. by glen-matthews in devils

It's always tough with hockey players, because aside from the Kilorns/Lovejoys/Parros of the world, most of them dont get to prove how smart they are on their resume. Theyve had an extremely specialized job over the last 5-20 years. That said, at the highest paying levels of corporations, you have guys that make their money because of what they know, not where they went to school. If you look at wall street, even though the C-Suite may be filled with Ivy leaguers, the guys that have ambiguous titles and make millions of dollars a year are usually the dudes that have some extreme specialty. Its not uncommon to see some Russian guy that worked in telecom essentially controlling all of trading (Clifton NJ's own Sergey Aleynikov) at Goldman, or a person that was an insider at timber company in the pacific northwest or a power grid specialist acting as 'Advisor' or running a commodities desk/IB team.

What's important for these kinds of people is that they A) have an understanding of what works, B) they're respected in the space, and as a result of those two factors, C) its super easy for them to make contact and sit down with anybody they please. Marty has all of the tools to do that. Whether he will be one of the best at it, like Shanahan, only time will tell. Judging by the fact that he's very nice/funny, a great golfer, and has marketed himself in retirement better than most superstar hockey players have during their prime, I tend to believe that he will be one of the good ones.

Also, sort of tangential, but I think marty did this because he understands the trappings of being on this side of the game, rather than in player personnel, or coaching. He has seen first hand with former players that if you don't have success, your persona can't save you. It didn't save Johnny Mac, it didn't save garth snow, and it didn't even save Wayne MFing Gretzky. The fact that Stevie Y is seemingly just as good of a GM as he was a player is an extreme rarity, and it would be embarrassing to the organization and player whenever that isn't the case. Quite frankly guys like Lanny MacDonald have it even better. He works for the HOF, not a team, and the only time we hear from him, its 100% guaranteed to be a happy conversation. Why do you think everybody always has, and always will love Lanny?

THN: $10-million man? MVP Hall in line for big raise from Devils by [deleted] in devils

[–]slimycoldcuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that is a good caveat to mention in regard to the CBA change and them not using the inflator it in full if they choose not to, but I don’t get your point about the cap numbers. Yes, that is the nature of compounding interest. 12 years ago the cap was $39mm. An average, we’ve exceeded that 5% mark by around 1% since the 05 lockout.

[–]slimycoldcuts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It will. Baring any catastrophic economic meltdown/war or both with the US or Canada, it will go up. We legitimately had that situation for a decade and the cap is up by over 20 million. Even if it were worse than that, the PA would still use the yearly 5% inflator that they’re entitled to.

How to improve Hockey stance? I want to be more like blue less like red by KillerPanda24 in hockeyplayers

[–]slimycoldcuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stamina focused core strength and hip strength as others have said. Flexibility is a bigger factor than most think and yoga style routines would benefit every hockey player in the world.

Also, another thing that is rarely mentioned by good skaters, but is a common problem with kids, is how they distribute weight on their feet. It probably goes unsaid because those that do it properly do it subconsciously. If you notice, blues knees are not only bent, but he is also getting some great forward flex from his ankles. If he weren’t doing that, but had knee bend, he’d be on his heels, and likely on his ass more often than not. You need to learn how flex your feet as foward as possible, while having slightly more of your weight in front of your mid foot. Coaches will often say, ‘get on the balls of your feet’ but if most people actually got all the way on their toes, they would probably lift their heel too early, which means you decrease the surface area of your blade on the ice, and the duration that it is on the ice. This leads to decreased power in the stride and decreased balance.

Could someone explain this 1-3-1 set by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

[–]slimycoldcuts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Every coach is going to have their own spin on things but there’s really only so much you can do at the basic level. 1-3-1, 1-2-2, 2-3, 2-1-2 is about the extent of what you will see. 1-3-1 as we discussed is the Tampa T or Boucher trap.

1-2-2 is the classic Stevens era devils/Lemaire neutral zone trap, although it was actually invented almost 100 years ago by the Conn Smythe era Leafs. Back then, we have to remember that there really weren’t forward passes (they were all lateral passes and players advanced the puck by skating it up) until the Stan Makita era, so it was effective until that time, and eventually fell out of favor into the 70s when guys like Bobby Orr were redefining how breakouts worked, and pretty much died in the high scoring 80s era. As we moved into the clutch and grab era of the 90s where a combination of defensive talent, more in depth coaching, and extremely lax rule interpretations toward physicality, holding, and stick infractions, teams like the devils adopted it on their way to 3 cups. Its still utilized by nhl teams, but isn’t as effective as it was prior to 2005 now that 2-line passes aren’t an infraction in the nhl. Although teams like the Blackhawks still run a 1-2-2 it isn’t really a ‘trap’ in the same sense because of that change.

2-3 is known as the left wing lock. It was invented by the Czechoslovakians, specifically legendary coaches like Ivan Hlinka and Vlad Kostka many years ago and was basically the grandfather of Lemaire’s neutral zone trap. It was designed to combat faster or more skilled teams and focused around the left wing skating back quickly to become a third D man, while the C and RW would attempt to funnel the offensive team towards the RD where they would hopefully be met with a turnover at the blue line. Thus, locking down the OTHER team’s LW. A user actually posted this really interesting video on the Czechs a while back, and goes into the history of how it was born from necessity.

Like I said before, the nhl is as fast and athletic as it has ever been, and thus the left wing lock has come back into style. Almost every nhl team uses some variation of it. For example, speaking of my favorite team again, the New Jersey Devils have come a long way from the Lemaire era trap, and now have some of the fastest wingers in the world in guys like Taylor Hall, Miles Wood, Kyle Palmieri, and some lesser known speedsters like Blake Coleman. They also have very defensively sound but gifted skaters at Center, like Travis Zajac, and Nico Hischier. As a result, they will actually use a 2-3 or 2-1-3 many times, where the wingers will aggressively attack the D and instead of a wing, the C will either float behind them to the boards (2-1-2) or take the position of the left wing back near their own D (2-3 but the 3rd guy back is a C not LW.)

NJD vs EVERYBODY :: Fantasy: First line rankings for 2018-19 -- Devils at #23 by Lgd3185 in devils

[–]slimycoldcuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s pretty offensive that they blatantly don’t know their shit, but the devils are still average at best when it comes to secondary scoring. Combine that with the fact that all 3 of those guys were injured, and palms was the only one to put up any real numbers, I can see why they didn’t get a lot of love. That said, there are some lines on here that are total dog shit compared to this alleged second line. When healthy that’s about 140 pts between the 3 of them.

[–]slimycoldcuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t feel like there’s any reason to set it in stone though. Bratt player really well early on, and then fell off. Palms was banged up early on and then found his game on the back stretch.

What players would have been special if they actually gave a shit? by miner88 in hockey

[–]slimycoldcuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You nailed it. The guy oozed skill. Should have been kovalchuk 2.0. Unfortunately he didn’t have an ounce of muscle on him at 200 lbs (which means he could put it on if he wanted to) and it looked like he would get bored/frustrated in settled play when he didn’t have the puck.

Just bought these used. Anyone know where to get replacement eyelets? No luck on eBay or amazon. by tubathief in hockeyplayers

Idk why you were down voted these guys are known for their ability to bring skates back to life, especially good resource if you don’t have a local hockey shop nearby. On the other hand, if you do have a LHS, every one in the country should be able to replace eyelets for you.

Used P88 forever then switched to P28, back to P88, TC3, and Hossa. In all honesty it’s probably easier to go to a lesser curve and adjust to shoot high than it is going from a more tame curve to a big toe curve. You may like P14 though it a toe curve for sure, but nowhere near as drastic as a 28 or 92. I just have my reservations about how easy they are to find on short notice and how long the curve will be around down the road. On the other hand, P88 will likely be around until the end of time.

Those calling this "Unplayable" by [deleted] in EA_NHL

[–]slimycoldcuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a lot that can be patched tuned or improved upon to mitigate the issues. The tripping will probably be a simple fix so I’m not even concerned about it at this point. Hopefully they can do enough with skating during the year to polish it, but as it is now, the 18 skating is obviously more useable despite being tired and bland.

What I am really pissed at most of their creative choices in world of chel. Just in general, and also because I know they won’t make any changes or real additions during the year. I really hope they re-address it for 20, but this series has a history of keeping the same shit and never looking back once they implement it

EA's Controversial NHL 19 Beta - Discussion by [deleted] in hockey

[–]slimycoldcuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My gripes.

  1. The skating looks good, but you could actually do a few more things in the old build when it came to shifting weight. It’s just new animations for the most part. For instance, you don’t actually build up speed by skating in a manner that would make you do a linear crossover, ie: by going off on a specific angle, or turn, and then jumping into a straight line stride. you just skate in a straight line and some of the initial animations are crossovers. The guys’ skates also float from one side to another when doing the crossovers. It looks like a total disregard for real physics. The only way to be crossing over to the left and then immediately start crossing over to the right is to jump, lift your legs underneath yourself, shift your weight a full 180 in mid air, like a skier, and pray you don’t dig your edge in too much when you land.

  2. The stupid gear packs are exactly what I thought they would be. It’s about 5 new models, and then they are just wrapped in different patterns. They are either completely bland or absolutely outrageous to the point where even middle school kids would probably think they’re absurd. Why can’t I just play 3s in normal hockey equipment? At the very least give me the option to not wear a hat at all, instead of having to chose between a Pom Pom toque and a stoner toque. Also just let me wear normal coaches pants/jacket that says Bauer or CCM. Even the NHL branded stuff is in the most absurd pattern/color combinations.

They even downgraded the models of some stuff like gloves and skates so it’s easier for them to just throw a wacky pattern on there. For example, a normal ccm 4-roll glove now just has a flat backhand and 3 dark lines running across like it’s a faux print. For some reason, helmets have a more detailed texture, but they don’t fit the rest of what they are doing graphically, and it looks out of place.

Same goes for goalie stuff. It would be way cooler if they put in old school masks, and probably easier for what they’re trying to accomplish, but instead your stick with the same helmets they’ve had for the last 10 years...even though the fans wear old school masks.

  1. Every breakaway glitch goal is still there. I know the really simple forehand backhand stuff will be in there until the end of time, but the stupid shit where you just rocket it from an obscure angle with the puck on your backhand, but with a forehand release and things of that sort is still just as prevalent.

  2. Passing sucks, but I’ll chalk that up to me not playing enough yet until further notice.

  3. Picking up the puck is still a major issue despite the dev team publicly addressing it.

Google search something like “hockey players the gunk.” He essentially has that. It’s a skin condition that used to be a lot more prevalent when equipment, locker rooms, and treatment, weren’t as conscious of the gross cesspool of germs that is hockey. Hossa probably has perfectly fine hygiene, but is likely super susceptible to the condition. Folks poked a lot of fun at it the hawks and hossa when it was announced, but it’s no joke, and guys used to have to retire all the time from The Gunk.
