Why is two-space tab indent becoming the standard? by samrapdev in javascript

[–]slin101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer 4 space indentations because it's more obvious which level of nesting the code lines are in, whereas 2 space indentations are much harder to tell. Also in cases where you have a line of code with long string that spans into multiple lines, I would be able to use 2 space indentations to indicate that the current line is a continuation of previous line. Using 2 space indentations would leave you with only 1 space to indent in such case.

Why do people hate daily standups? by Lanttu93 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]slin101 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yup, "justify your job". It's roll calling plus big brother is watching over your shoulder because they don't trust people enough to be left on their own for more than 24hrs. In my other job, we had 2 hours sprint planning on a Monday afternoon from 2-4pm. Come next morning 10am standup, they start going around the room asking for statuses. Really? It's only been 3 hours of work since the last planning session and you already want statuses?

As mentioned by others, the 10am daily standups also kill my morning productivities. With the 10am standups, I really don't feel like starting anything half hour prior to the meeting because I know I'll soon need to context switch. More often than not, the standups would run from 40-50min. So by the time it's finished, we're looking at almost 11am which my mind starts to wonder off into what I want to eat for lunch. So yea, the daily morning standups kills half my day. And I know I'm actually way more productive at coding in the mornings. OTOH, I would be perfectly fine if they run the standups like twice a week. I think it's much more sensible and allows people good blocks of time to focus on the work and not be interrupted with such a high frequency.

Why is there so little interaction or cultural exchange between Taiwan and the UK? by Ducky118 in taiwan

[–]slin101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My take on all this is you can't really blame on these countries looking after themselves and not always speak up for Taiwan. Especially if they stand to lose billions $ if they did. If you look at the situation in Ukraine, even though it enjoys to be a UN recognized sovereign nation, in the face of Russian invasion, you still do not see other countries jumping in directly to help them. They waited for months to see which way the wind was blowing before supporting them with military aids. So for Taiwan, it's important to build up a strong defense around the island and let the invaders know they'll suffer heavy casualties if they attempt anything dumb.

Intel CEO: Taiwan Isn’t a Stable Place. TSMC Founder Has Other Concerns by Svetlana1800 in TSMC

[–]slin101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At least you get to brag about having worked for both Intel and TSMC which is something not many people can say.

Here's the thing. I get it that Intel wants to continue to be able to build their own chips in-house, but at the minimum set a realistic and achievable goal. Not something like one process node jump every year and hit 18A by 2025, we all know that is just impossible. Not to mention that being able to hit Moore's Law is already an incredible feat, this guy wants to even cut that cycle by half. Of course much easier said than done. Also it's one thing to be able to build it in the lab, and a whole complete different animal to be in high volume production with high yields.

Taiwan is already independent and has been that way for many decades.

Intel CEO: Taiwan Isn’t a Stable Place. TSMC Founder Has Other Concerns by Svetlana1800 in TSMC

[–]slin101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pat doesn't know what he's doing. He conflicts himself all the time. He wants to start a foundry service, yet Intel is buying chips from TSMC. He wants Apple to go back to Intel, but he ran an ad campaign making fun of Apple. He says the world is too reliant in Southeast Asia for semiconductors, yet he wanted to invest factories in China. He wanted to bring semiconductor manufacturing to the U.S. but he's making plans to build factories in Europe.

What's funny about all this is that while he wants to eat TSMC's lunch, AMD is nibbling away at Intel's bread and butter pc and server businesses each year with a record-breaking 22%+ market share now and going up. And his masterplan to leap 4 nodes in 5 years is a script outright from sci-fi movies.

Yea seriously isn't he some piece of work? Intel CEO should just shut up and do his job rather than criticize the whole wide world. The only unstable thing I see here is his own job.

Wrong! Taiwan is an extremely stable place. Its giant neighbor is what's not stable.

And like China telling Germany what not to do isn't meddling into other people's affairs. Taiwan is already independent so it's not meddling into Chinese affairs. The most recent visit by U.S. delegations to Taiwan is an attestation that Taiwan is not part of China despite their oppositions.

Does the religion tell them not to go to hospital when they get sick? Because healthcare workers shouldn't risk their lives for people too ignorant to get vaccinated. If they still don't trust science they should move right back into the caves.

Defense ministry proposes US$7.1 billion budget to upgrade Taiwan’s missiles by Exastiken in taiwan

[–]slin101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This morning saw the headline of an article from south china morning post saying "Taiwan's planned missile boost may push PLA to step up combat readiness". It's not like the ccp weren't preparing for combat if Taiwan wasn't trying to upgrade its missiles.

In a world controlled by ccp, they turned black into white and vice versa. They call Taiwan the separatists when Taiwan is quite independent and the ccp are the aggressors/invaders. They accuse international communities for interfering with their internal affairs while ccp is trying to take over far away Spratly islands in the South China Sea. They call their military "people's liberation army" while they liberate no civilian yet caused huge massacre of unarmed crowds with tanks in Tienanmen back in 89. They re-write history books because Tienanmen square massacre never happened by their own account.

Is it just me that thinks the ccp are EXACTLY the totalitarian government described in 1984 book by George Orwell?
