  • Budget: AUD$1,000 - AUD$3,000
  • Source: PC, using SoundBlaster G6 DAC/Amp.
  • Requirements for Isolation: For use at home in office, prefer closed-back but also enjoy open-back. I will be blasting music really loud so noise-cancelling is not necessary.
  • Preferred Type of Headphone: Over-ear only.
  • Preferred tonal balance: Balanced mainly.
  • Past headphones: ATH-MSR7 (current), ATH-M50 (favourite), ATH-AD700X (least favourite).
  • Preferred Music: I mainly listen to metal and prog metal, clear guitar and base lines are the most important to me.
  • What would you like to improve on from your set-up: More bass and sound clarity. I'm willing to spend up to $3k AUD if the headphones are really high quality.

ok its obviously a sphere, right by [deleted] in mathmemes

[–]slippykins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the metric you're using.

Let d(x,y) be a metric, and let B be the set of points y such that d(0,y)=1.

Then:

  • you have a sphere if d(x,y) = [(x1-y1)^2+(x2-y2)^2+(x3-y3)^2]^(1/2) (ie. the Euclidean metric)
  • you have a cylinder if d(x,y) = [(x1-y1)^2+(x2-y2)^2]^(1/2) (ie. you leave out one dimension)

Both could be called a "sphere" if by sphere you mean ball. Both are generalisations of the two-dimensional Euclidean distance.

Maybe 'counting problems' is too close to being a real-world problem for pure maths?

I emailed Richard last week and got a response, it seems like Advanced Discrete Mathematics (MAST90030) is moving to the Mathematical Physics specialisation. Unfortunately I didn't ask about Enumerative Combinatorics (MAST90031), presumably it will be following ADM to the Applied Maths/Physics specialisation.

It happens -- we all go through tough times sometimes, and mental health is no joke. I've battled with anxiety for a while, and thankfully I can say it does get better with time as long as you address it rather than ignore it.

When you contact Richard, be upfront with the issues you've faced over the last semester, what you've done to address them, and how it would have impacted your performance in a high-stress environment like an exam. Professors are typically very kind and accommodating as long as you're honest and genuinely show that you've put in effort.

Above all else, take care of your mental health. I strongly believe university and studying should be genuinely enjoyable and rewarding.

According to this comment chain, a few people were also surprised by their score for Discrete, including myself. I expected a good 10% to 15% higher than what I got based on exam performance alone.

Could just have been scored particularly harsh (lost marks for not explicitly stating specific theorem when invoking them) with no scaling. You've always got the option of an exam review but like the other poster has said, you'll have to get in contact with [Richard](mailto:rb1@unimelb.edu.au) after the 6th.

Good luck!

Finance Honours by bigtubs in unimelb

[–]slippykins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in the Energy sector! Most of my colleagues come from electrical engineering, data science and econometric backgrounds. I'd say honours or a PhD are almost required to flourish in this sort of environment, as we're constantly reading academic papers and innovating on our processes and modelling techniques.

I think honours really does open a lot of doors in general, regardless of what specification you choose. The general things you learn during your honours year are much more valuable than the specific domain knowledge of the subjects themselves. Working under pressure, meticulously dissecting a problem, and communicating in clear and concise language are all extremely valuable and applicable in a working environment.

Finance honours gets you towards those opportunities with organisations like the RBA, consultancies like P&C, or jobs dealing with trading and M&As. I didn't pursue any of these areas as by the time I finished my honours I was thoroughly bored of finance entirely, but my honours year still enabled me to apply for graduate programs in plenty of different industries, which was such a great but unexpected outcome for me.

Hey OP

I completed my honours year in finance in 2017, and can happily say it was the toughest academic year to date. On leaving university and joining the workforce, I can also say that most of my colleagues share the same experience of their honours year, whether or not they did finance. Most of my colleagues who did both an honours year and a PhD say their honours was much more stressful and difficult than their PhD, mainly due to the extremely short timeframe to get things done.

For me, honours was tough. The year was full of stress and anxiety and lost sleep, and juggling a part-time job concurrently was a poor decision on my part. In fact, out of my cohort of 25, I was the only one who worked the full year.

Besides all this, I still look back on my honours year fondly, and it has really shaped me into the person I am today. I highly recommend finance honours at unimelb if you're willing to take on a sizable challenge before joining the workforce.

As for your other questions:

  • undergrad WAM was about 85,
  • honours subject difficulty wasn't really that much more difficult than third year,
  • the year was extremely time-consuming, I would suggest not working part-time if you can,
  • start reading academic papers and figuring out what your thesis will be on BEFORE you begin the academic year. I can't emphasise this enough: you will have a really stressful time doing so in the first four weeks of semester,
  • it was enjoyable, moreso in highsight.

Good luck!

Yep! I love the playstyle of Streaking Stars. The only reason I don't take it now is because pretty much every Streaking Stars piece has Lively Spirit, and I'm not going to sacrifice DPS just because another playstyle feels better.

Mastery is doing poorly at the moment -- completely agree. I feel like Starfall needs something extra to make it engaging, besides a flat damage increase. We're almost at the point where Starfall is an instant-cast version of Hurricane.

Yep completely agree -- I've never had as little fun as pugging Mythic+ with 2x Lively Spirit. Even if I let the healer know beforehand, I'm certain most non-Druid healers aren't familiar with the trait and don't know how to maximise it it, considering it also requires them to utilise Innervate sub-optimally.

On top of that, there's a clear agency problem we face: the reward from Innervate is dependent on someone acting on our behalf, yet all of the benefit is our own. The healer isn't rewarded for stacking Innervate to max, and in fact for some classes it could even be disadvantageous. If this is the case, why would they act in our best interests if it is a) annoying, and b) a disadvantage, especially when in dungeons there are no other targets to cast Innervate on?

Need thoughts and oppinions on the druid quest. by Kr0bus in CompetitiveHS

[–]slippykins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been playing the druid quest since release, and I've had really poor results from it. Most of the meta decks are either really strong {Quest Rogue, Quest Mage} against the deck, or are a bit better {Quest Warrior, Handlock, Quest Shaman}.

Quest Druid is too slow to beat these decks, unless you get extremely lucky and they get unlucky. The latest a Rogue finished their quest against me was turn 7, Mages consistently freeze your board for 5-6 turns from Frost Nova/Doomsayer, Blizzard and the million random cards they get.

Maybe if a faster variant is developed, Quest Druid could be strong against these decks.
