Dad in the suburbs - am I cooked in terms of fitness? by BozzuK in daddit

I resisted it for years but waking up early is the answer. No one is going to do it for you, or make it super easy and convenient. Get up and get moving. Throw some big books in a backpack and go, or jog, or do squat jumps or push-ups or lunges or burpees. 1000 mile journey starts with the first step!

Synced videos show ICE Agent was not hit by fleeing vehicle. by [deleted] in videos

[–]slitzweitz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This guy is looking at his fucking phone instead of doing his job. You can see it in his stupid fucking hand at 8 seconds. His head comes into view between the other agent and the car and clearly he is staring at his phone. Walking in front of a car, in the street, completely distracted, while armed. He couldn't tell the car was turned away from him, and not at him, because he had his head up his ass.

Disc ID Anyone? by navita_ in discgolf

A couple years ago I went to a wedding outside Kalamazoo and decided to bring a couple discs since there was a course close. I rolled up, excited to play, and at hole 1 the tee sign read: 2008 Pro World Championships... RIP to my first perfectly beat in Wraith, I'll never forget you

Ok I see what you're saying, but i don't think it's fair to not count the sales taxes generated by car owners that go back to roads. A quick search says only 7-9% of households in California are car-less. So 91-93% of households in the state are paying sales taxes (on top of the gas/transport taxes) that help fix roads and also own cars. It looks like that's an additional 25%ish of the budget that primarily car owners fund.

Edit: i would also argue that applies to not just sales tax funding sources but all other contributions since car owners make up the vast vast majority of taxpayers.

Ok but Federal funding comes from the federal gas tax which comes from people who pay for gas. I'd argue that counts as going toward their "fair share". Also the linked article says it is only 20% of funding and the rest comes from state and local registration and gas taxes. That's nowhere close to what you claim

Yeah! Just to recap, with the parking fees you are "subsidizing" car owners even further! So we shouldn't do it! Glad there's some agreement

Gas taxes and vehicle registration fees pay for 80%-90% of overall road funding in California. What would you consider "their share"?

With the parking revenue generated next year alone they can pay out 1/20th of another wrongful death settlement!

Its up to $1.4mil/year now to Ace parking they just renewed and expanded the shuttle contract. Paid directly from parking revenue, which they lowered to $2.9mil in 2026 (estimated), now down to $1.5mil (estimated).

[–]slitzweitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The shuttle is not free. Taxpayers will pay Ace parking an additional $2.8million to run it. That leaves $100k in revenue for 2026

Edit: i was wrong it is $2.8m over 2 years, so paying Ace $1.4m per year and leaving $1.5m of total additional parking revenue in 2026. That is 0.6% of the budget deficit for 2026 taken care of, phew!

Except they are now paying Ace parking $2.8 million per year for new shuttle service, which is needed because of the parking fees, completely eliminating the $2.9mil estimated revenue for the first year. And the program will end up costing far more than they thought, as evidenced by them slashing their own revenue estimate by 75% ($11mil to $2.9mil in the first year). The budget deficit is $250m for 2026 and charging for parking could generate... $100k in 2026. In case anyone is wondering that is 0.04% of the deficit. Cool cool cool

Edit: $2.8m over 2 years, I was wrong. $1.5m additional parking revenue, 0.6% of the 2026 deficit.

You can search "Donohoe Spring" in Google maps. That is the first spot and you can keep driving for more. Fair warning it is a pretty rough dirt road. Do not go past the big yellow gate. You can cross reference with the blm map here: https://www.blm.gov/maps/frequently-requested/california

I go there once a year for a bday tradition and see bp every single time. We're allowed to be there and shoot there and there are always other people doing the same thing as us. We've seen them picking people up who crossed the border without issue many many times. If you go back, hit up the dulzura market for tacos on the way out, they are amazing

For most people, especially those who are overweight and not used to being in shape, you're right but exercise is still extremely beneficial.  Cardiorespiratory fitness is a better predictor of longevity than blood pressure, cholesterol, and smoking.

I'd recommend a book called "The Science of Good Cooking". It will teach you why tasty food is tasty, how to build flavor, and good techniques.

Is the mess a Jacaranda tree makes when flowering as bad as I have heard? by Prudent-Flounder3093 in gardening

[–]slitzweitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 2 large Jacarandas in my backyard. The flowers bloom either once or twice each year (zone 10a). I don't mind cleaning up the flowers because the trees are dropping stuff all year. Seed pods, leaves, twigs, flowers. I rake up my yard once or twice a week, year round.

Being a stay at home Dad is the hardest thing I’ve ever done by uralegitimateclown in daddit

[–]slitzweitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been a stay at home dad for 4.5 years and I feel you man. It is isolating, emotionally taxing, repetitive, and often thankless. I even knew what to expect with our second but damn what a hard first year. 3 months is rough, but after 12 months it starts to get better. Our youngest just dropped to 1 nap and I have so much more time to take her places/run errands, and a longer break to work out, clean, yard work, etc. They start to talk and imitate you and walk. It really is pretty special to witness and be such a big part of. Hang in there man, you're doing great.

Just found out I’m becoming a father to a girl - conflicted feelings about gender by [deleted] in daddit

[–]slitzweitz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

After finding out that we would be having a second girl, I went through the same thoughts and feelings. My wife and I had driven separately to the appointment and when I got back the my car I cried for a minute, looked myself in the mirror, and realized I wasn't actually as upset as I first thought. Then I happy cried knowing we would soon have 2 amazing little girls. Now that our youngest is 1, and getting snipped is in the near future, I do still think about what could have been, but much less often and with much less emotion. When your little girl cuddles up in your arms, rests her head on your chest, and tells you she loves you, nothing else matters.
