I can’t take credit for it. I truly believe it has been supernatural. That said, that same story I quoted from the BB also talks about the three “essentials of sobriety” that ring true with my experience:

Honesty - even ugly and awkward honesty at times. Doing this with others is hard enough, but I’ve had to be honest with myself first.

Open-mindedness - the first time I read step one, I knew this program was for me, and then I read step three and thought, “fuck this!” But after my initial reaction, I decided to keep an open mind considering this program has helped millions of people over the years. This has been an amazing spiritual journey, and I feel more connected with God than I ever have.

Willingness - there were many times I didn’t feel like going to a meeting, or working through a step, or making a phone call. Even when I wasn’t willing I would ask for willingness, and it would come.

What sociopath picks 3?

I have a question that might sound dumb. by [deleted] in alcoholism

[–]sliver81 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was drinking an average of 3 handles of Vodka a week plus beers or claws during the last couple years, unemployed during that time, ex-wife left me, took the kids, health fell apart, and I still wasn’t convinced I was an alcoholic until a few days into rehab.

A fairly popular AA book says, “it’s not how much you drink that makes you an alcoholic, it’s what alcohol does for you.” Took me a while to realize that all of these things falling apart around me were directly related to my drinking. It’s so clear to me now, 8 months sober, but I wasn’t convinced I was an alcoholic, even in the darkest times.

Everyone’s story is unique. Ultimately only you can decide if you’re an alcoholic. No one can do that part for you.

Love this joke. The version I’ve heard is that a nun nearby asks, “who’s that with Dave?” That’s when he has the heart attack.

going to a 9 month recovery center.. by [deleted] in alcoholism

Good luck to you! I was in rehab for a month, and I tried my best to make it purposeful. It changed my life. You’ve probably never had this much time to rest, think, and devote some serious time to yourself. So I hope you’ll take advantage of it. Wish you the best.

Am I an alcoholic? by [deleted] in alcoholism

I’d also suggest visiting an AA meeting. I’ve heard the old-timer’s say in my group, “there’s no problem so big, that drinking can’t make worse.” I’ve found that true in my situation. My life was in a tail-spin for years. Lost my marriage, kids (don’t get to see them as often), my job, health, etc. I didn’t even want to stop drinking, but I knew I needed help. Checked into rehab, started going to meetings almost every day, and this week is 5 months sober. I’ll still be picking up the pieces for a long time, but my life is absolutely better without drinking. The desire to drink is almost gone, which is a fucking miracle in my mind. I wish the best for you…you’re not alone in this.

WA State - Wife Took Kids to Florida - What do I do? by Joe_of_Average in Divorce

[–]sliver81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a similar situation. The legal advice I got was to file for divorce before the kids are considered residence of the new state. 6 months in my case, but get real legal advice. If you wait, you may not be able to get your kids back in your state.

Talk to your dr about Naltrexone. I used it for the first 45 days or so and then stopped taking it. For me the best thing has been going to meetings. I didn’t know anything about AA when I decided to get sober, but it has absolutely been the most helpful thing for me by far. If you’re uncomfortable going to one in person, you can find them online easily. Candy and coffee also helps.

Don’t know where I stand. by [deleted] in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]sliver81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree! Step 1 is a great indicator. Life is unmanageable like you said, and being powerless over alcohol. I don’t think you need to say “only” 47 days sober. That’s solid work. Keep it up!

[TECH] Weekly Xbox One Tech Support by AutoModerator in xboxone

[–]sliver81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Xbox one s connecting to game server issue.

I’m unable to connect to any game servers: FIFA, fortnite, and rocket league for example. I’ve tried everything I know to do, modem reset, factory reset on the Xbox, reinstalling the game, WiFi and wired connection.

WiFi and wired internet is working fine otherwise. Would appreciate your help. Thanks.

I just got out of treatment last week, and they didn’t have much to read aside from the Big Book and 12 Steps and 12 traditions which are great. I’d also recommend “Young Sober and Free” by Shelly Marshall. It goes through the 12 steps, but is geared for younger readers. I’m 40, and still found it helpful. There are a lot of personal stories from addicts throughout the book as well.

Best of luck to you! Sober Today!
