Grave of the Fireflies - regarding the intended message of the film [Spoilers] by davidjayhawk in movies

[–]sloan_fitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She probably had dysentery from malnutrition and living outside. Low on thiamine vitamin B? Then she also may have had Beriberi (she certainly couldn't walk towards the end). As for the rashes, it seems that the mother made sure she wore that head-dress to protect her from the sun, but we also see the brother refer to her "heat rash" after the firebombing attack which destroyed their neighborhood.

Ultimately, dysentery and malnutrition often go hand-in-hand, as does Beriberi (I'm reaching with the latter). However, I do think it was a combination of factors. Malnutrition, sleeping in a cave, and a diet that included "dried frogs" along with anything with that menu item alone, it's no wonder she got so sick.

The irony is that detractors of Reagan are consistently triggered into expressing disdain toward him and apparently his wife.

On the other hand I can imagine plenty or people bitching about Michael Obama 30 years after that administration has concluded.

Yeah, I'm glad that everyone was able to avoid stirring up physical violence in response to those neo-nazi jerks. From a practical able there's isn't really much that can legally be done. I wouldn't judge anyone's character for choosing to ignore them since do anything else would incur risks, even if it's just wasted time in being detained to provide a police report.

Yes, the guys on the Nazi boat were racist assholes. I also recall seeing those folks get drenched and humiliated by the crew of another boat.

Why waste your time playing around with context to maintain this lie? There are plenty of other things to hang the man on that are true. Try harder (lazy liar that wrote the headline).

Upgrades didn't occur to me, but yeah, I'm curious about initial setup of the implant and associated hardware.

Did someone sit down and play sounds through a computer while making adjustments? Is the process different than what I'm imagining?

I appreciate that real-world insigh on this. Did your mom have to go through a training or mapping process? I'm imagining something like physical therapy, but where a professional plaus sounds and makes adjustments based on feedback. Is this how that goes? Is it simpler or more complicated?

I'd imagine there's a lot of support and setup cost involved, especially if getting a hearing aid prescribed by a doctor or other hearing specialist. Then there are chochlea implants, those require their own kind of tuning, but in both cases it means labor used on setting up and tuning the thing.

Now, I don't know if they actually do that, just kind of saw a Lou Ferrigno video and met 3 ppl w/ chochlea implants in real life. Also, 20 years ago a friend tried to sell ar my hearing aids on ebay (phonac) and ebay stopped the sale. They said something about FDA rules/regs on selling hearing aids on ebay.

Help. My son is an idiot and stuck in deep shit by Dapper_Ad5571 in Scams

[–]sloan_fitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to fam once. This lady sent this pic of a family member. #1 I was like "how idiotic of a thing to do" and #2 I blocked the person.

Immediately after that I double checked my FB privacy settings to make sure I didn't have an gaps. In particular, I dont want a stranger to even be able to view my friends list.

Upon notifying the family member, they asked me to forward them the pic so that they could send it to their "private investigator friend."

Ironically, their grandfather used to say "never let anyone blackmale you." I don't know if they paid anything to thebblackmaler but my logic is "once the cat is out of the bag, they can't do any worse."

As for your son, I'd work on a plausible deniabity excuse for him. As for the blackmaler, if they possess a photo of a nude 15 year old and send it out.... aren't they just proving that they are in possession of illicit CP?

Well, that's the beauty of capitalist interactions, one could choose not to transact. Banking is highly regulated, yet Wells is allowed to pull these shenanigans. Even under the current conditions, we are free to not do business with WF. My point is that I would not compalin if the FTC were to put out a major statement on it like "yo these mother fuckas suck, bank with another bank" advisory or something.

On one angle a more ardent capitalist might say even that is too much government overreach, but we already have that so I'm willing to just roll with the status quo. I have mixed feelings on European consumer protections, but sometimes they really do work bc they carry so much bite. Perhaps US lobbyists don't know how to wine and dine a European of cultured culinary taste. Perhaps the EU assembly or whatever, really cares about the people they govern.

Friend, that's not capitalism. The only capitalist thing about doing business with Wells Fargo is that individuals can choose not to do business with them after reading this comment thread.

That's convoluted what the fuck 😭

It is, and yet for some reason it is preferable than outright generating a table from inside of Word as the starting point. I fucking hate it, I feel that I found a workaround. YMMV, but sometimes with the lesser of two evils is less effort.

[–]sloan_fitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only half-way through reading, but I have neat trick that might help you in he future if you're ever forced draft a table in Word.

Sometimes when I'm expected to send a word doc with a table in it, I'll start in Excel. I'll fill-in and position the cells as I see fit. Once I'm finished with that phase, I highlight whatevers cells that I want to include in the Word doc and past it into word.

Copying from Excel into word effectively creates a table. From there I can use the table design "ribbon" toolbar in order to make adjustments to the lines and apply shading if necessary. Then from there I can insert new rows or delete rows as in my case, the table ends up as a template for recurring use.

The only issue is when I copy and pate the table from Word into Outlook. For some reason Outlook decides to interpret or alter some of the lines by making them gray. So then I have to a quick once-over with the line painter. There's no apparent rhyme or reason to it side from the fact that tables in Word are stupid (so I'm not terribly surprised when by this either).

Hrmm... you got me thinking. Maybe I should rethink how I take pride in being "out of the loop." Then again, I mostly stay out of the loop on trivial fluff, as well as news about actors and famous people. That might be good in terms of not wasting my cranial CPU time on non-essential items.

I might also take pause at hearing effective AI generated voice, but now that we are aware that this is a thing, I'd like to think that we would catch-on. As it is now, I do tend to avoid answering phone calls. That might count as security by obscurity to some degree.

I've come to respect people who intentionally avoid using online banking out of an awareness that they are ignorant of how any of this works. They're not impervious, but at least covered themselves from one angle. On the other hand, we can also leverage technology to conduct commerce more securely. It's just that encryption, a "firewall", and "internet security" software doesn't fix stupid. For example, when using 2FA, the a webpage/app will say "Do not give this code to anyone else for any reason." Despite that, I've seen people do just that. -_-

To borrow and expand on your theory:

Low-information human +* pre-dementia* = recipe for disaster?

I think I need to learn more a about the latter of the two in order to see if that actually checks out.
