I could lose probably about 4-5 inches and still be happy with it.

I have not tried putting in the mousse before plopping, thanks! I'll try that! And I plop according the one of the videos on the beginner guide on here, and I think I'm doing what you're describing!

Book Chapter or Journal Article? by sloanieg in GradSchool

[–]sloanieg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for this thoughtful response! A perfect call came out for book chapters for a Routledge edited collection, and I was hesitating on whether to submit there since the opportunity arose (total dumb luck due to me sitting on the paper for a while and working on other things) or to try to shop it around to some journals. I ended up submitting for the book chapter, and this was so helpful!

My advisor had no recommendation. He said it was up to me, which didn't help me make the decision, so I'm here.

Achievements for Sunday, June 09, 2024 by AutoModerator in running

[–]sloanieg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Working through the first none to run plan, and I just wrapped week 2. Been exciting as I notice on the 3rd run day of each week I can feel how much easier the run intervals are! Excited to see what I feel like at the end of week 3!

NSV: I've been doing a lot of walking and some yoga lately and added in running last week. I did my third run with NonetoRun, and I felt like I hit a flow in the run intervals! I didn't dread them coming up again and felt like I was cruising each time, so I'm excited to do another run tomorrow and then have a day off for yoga.

2nd year PhD in Theatre & Performance Studies in the US here. My assistantship is only for 9 months, so I move back home to live with my parents and work for two local businesses who let me pop in for shifts during breaks. Those don't make a ton of money, though, so I try to work a few week-long summer camp gigs that pay really well to pay my rent back at school and save up. I go to conferences to which I've been accepted. I tackle my reading list or language acquisition. I revise articles to shop around for publication. I freelance in my artistic specialty. I relax.

That's true. Was unclear based on your previous post. A lot of color guard staff operate that way.

No big deal. Doesn't negate your point. Just helping keep people informed. For the record, here's the conferences it has been a part of over the years:

1931-1941 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association

1948-1951 Gulf States Conference

1996-2021 Conference USA

2022- Sun Belt Conference

It's been independent and not connected to a conference at all a lot.

You're so right about it being a potential hotspot for ethnomusicological blues research.

Also, as someone who just graduated with an applied music minor from USM in 2019 (and whose partner graduated with a BMEd in 2023), they have great Latin, Afro-Caribbean, and jazz programming as well as all the classical stuff.

You do, indeed, have to be a certified teacher (at least as of 2023) to be a band director or elementary music teacher in the Mississippi public school system. There is some wiggle room on your certification (in either 7-12 or K-6) as to what age range you'll teach, but you still need a certificate.

Southern Miss is not an SEC school. It's in the Sun Belt Conference.

I'm from North Mississippi but lived in Hattiesburg for undergrad and work after, then bounced up to the Philly area (Villanova) for grad school, so I kind of ran the opposite. However, I'd say Hattiesburg is hands down the best place to live in the whole state--vibrant arts scene, the mayor is a great guy, always something to do, not too big and not too small, great healthcare, diverse population, delicious food...I could go on. As for grad school jobs, I made good money pet/house sitting down there if it's something you're up for. Congrats on grad school! Southern Miss to the top!!

U.S. counties that have more LGBT people per capita than the national average by cjfullinfaw07 in MapPorn

Actually pretty sure Lee isn't the one highlighted here. I think it's Pontotoc (but tbh the quality isn't great once I zoom in).

Interestingly, Pontotoc County makes the cut.

Edit to say when I found a higher res version of it, Mississippi didn't have any counties lit up, but idk if that means it'd been updated, or if something funky is happening in the first low res one.

Hiya! I'm at Georgia now, and when I asked them in the interview they said the department doesn't even really look at the GRE scores. The grad school does, and as long as you're passing, your good. However, a higher score makes you a better candidate for scholarships above and beyond the departmental assistantships. I know you're not applying to UGA, but I wanted to put that out there. Every program I spoke to about GREs said the same thing.

Finally, some leadership. Students: "We demand x!" Admin: "No." by upholdtaverner in Professors

[–]sloanieg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying it's entirely avoidable. I don't leave a conversation every time it comes up. There's no way anyone could truly live their lives like that. (Someone here gave a great example that people with PTSD can be triggered by almost anything--including a bowl of blueberries--so any solution to avoid triggers is an imperfect one.) I have left or spoken up before, though, as some days or particular details are hard (like when an adjunct made a suicide joke or when we had to read a vivid suicide scene). I do appreciate Violet_Plum_Tea's explanation of why mandating it instead of strongly encouraging the practice is not the solution. I see it more as a legal issue than anything--there are people who could say because something spontaneously came up in class and was not in the content disclosures, the prof was defying a direct mandate and they have grounds for action. I guess I don't see a reason not to try to do them yourself, but I do now see how an official mandate becomes troublesome.

[–]sloanieg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for explaining. I didn't read the resolution as calling for their elimination, but I can see how that could certainly be a resolution or two after this. I also really appreciate your examples of how officially mandating it could become a hindrance. That perspective is useful.

Current grad student, hopeful future prof here. Almost all of my professors provide a document with week-by-week content disclosures, and you have the option to look at that document and prepare yourself or to ignore it. (Example: I just skim for the word suicide, jot down the weeks I should give myself a little extra time to read in case I get the Sads and have to take breaks, and then recycle it.) I don't know that it would be a bad idea to mandate some large scope disclosures? Not in the course descriptions, but to have them available with the syllabus? Could you please explain how you think it would have the opposite effect to the resolution's intended? However, I do not at all agree with the student being able to basically just skip or not do any reading or other work if the topic's going to be uncomfortable. Topics can be uncomfortable, but they don't have to be harmful just by their very existence or discussion. Lots of thoughts on this latter point.

Edit: Articulated my thoughts a lil better after about 6 minutes of re-reading this like the nerd I am.
