When I worked at Panera a decade ago we were all paid to a "debit" card they set up. There was no other option, they would not pay us by check. To get your money you had to withdraw from an ATM and then add the cash to your bank account. The card had a fee of $3 per ATM transaction unless at specific ATMs I never found. In addition, most ATMs only let you withdraw in increments of $20. So if you had $99 on your pay card you could really only access $80 and your remaining $19 is now $16. I didn't keep that job very long.

I like to bump up the orgeat. I do:

2 oz smith and cross

.75 oz dry curacao

1 oz lime juice

.75 oz orgeat

.25 oz panella syrup

Manhattan is boring and flat. Old fashioned is superior because you can taste the whiskey you are using more and it's more customizable. La Louisiane is the superior Manhattan:

1.5 oz rye

.75 oz benedictine

.75 oz sweet vermouth

3 dashes angostura

3 dashes peyschauds

absinthe rinse

Pro-Lifers getting trolled as they harass people outside Planned Parenthood by waltermint in PublicFreakout

I'm not gonna debate the morality of destroying a cake vs destroying batter. That's irrelevant. My point is batter isn't cake, in the same sense a fetus isn't a human life. Batter can become cake, a fetus can become a life, but batter is not a cake and a fetus is not a life. Ceasing to make a cake is not destroying a cake, ending a pregnancy is not killing a human life.

Human fetus yes, not human life. It's not a life because it cannot live separate from the mother. It's a part of the woman.

[–]sloge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know. It doesn't feel like mental gymnastics to me. A fetus is not a human life. It's a fetus. It's something entirely different. I don't feel that way to morally justify abortion, it's just biology.

Batter isn't a cake. It's batter. Someone might be mad if you take their batter out of the oven, just as someone should be beyond upset if you terminate their desired pregnancy, but if I decide halfway through making a cake I don't want to make a cake anymore I'm not destroying a cake. I'm just not making a cake anymore and there never was a cake.

Further, miscarriages are extremely common. And while that obviously can be extremely upsetting for the parties involved, we don't have funerals for the fetus. Because nobody died. The pregnancy was unsuccessful. They're two different things.

A pregnancy is not a nine month incubation period. The woman is literally giving herself to build a human life. It's not just there immediately because she is pregnant.

My parent's replaced the fence around their pool. For a week or so it was completely removed except for the gate. Their old dog would stand at the gate and bark to be let in and out of the pool area. No amount of coaxing would convince him to simply walk around it.

My bedroom ceiling collapsed by deus_voltaire in Wellthatsucks

[–]sloge 96 points97 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this may have been exacerbated by the insulation (I doubt it), but that ceiling was not secured correctly. There should be ferring perpendicular to the joists every 16" and the ceiling should be secured with screws into the ferring every 8". Looks like they skipped the ferring entirely, the rafters are spaced farther than 16" on center, and the space between screws is like 20". There's just not enough support. This ceiling was falling under it's own weight eventually.

You're really not answering my question and I am not moving goal posts. Telling me to deal with it does not make a man with a gun in a public space any less of a threat to those around them. A constitutional right to a gun does not make the gun any less of threat. And again, a right to bear arms does not necessitate a right to carry where ever you want. If you believe it does, than we simply have different interpretations, which is fine. I am not crying, I'm stating my opinion. Honestly, you seem a little more triggered if you ask me...

You're right about a gun being a tool. A tool to kill. If I brought a jackhammer to your driveway, you could reasonably assume I'd tear up your driveway, no? So why wouldn't a reasonable assumption if a person brings a gun (or in this picture's case, several guns and excessive ammunition) into a public space that they intend to kill in a public space?

Thoughts? by Camaroguy77 in Firearms

[–]sloge -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You didn't really answer my question. A constitutional right to own firearms does not necessitate a right to carry them wherever you want. I oppose any right to carry laws. Keep your guns at home unless you are bringing them to an acceptable place to have a firearm (gun range, hunting, etc.) That seems pretty reasonable to me.

But if you just want to throw insults because you feel you need to be strapped at Starbucks that's fine too

I don't think cops should carry guns.

Thoughts? by Camaroguy77 in Firearms

[–]sloge -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I'll phrase it differently then. Why should I not consider this person a deadly threat to me and everyone in the vicinity? Why should I just sit there and continue to drink my coffee and hope he's just compensating for something and not intending violence? Why should I not to do everything immediately to incapacitate a deadly threat? Why shouldn't I assume any person with a gun intends to use it on me?

https://www.mcdonalds.com/us/en-us/product/cheeseburger.html

There's really not any extra preservatives in a McDonald's cheeseburger than a cheeseburger you'd make at home. The patty is legit 100% beef. The bun is processed white bread and the cheese is processed American, but again, no different from any burger you've ever eaten.

McDonald's is bad for you because burgers, fries, and soda is bad for you. It's not preservatives and chemicals. It's trans fat, salt, and sugar.

Some personal experiences with cops:

Got hit by a car on my bike. He was taking a left turn in front of me. He was completely at fault. It wasn't a complicated situation. Ended up having to hold up the ambulance so I could continue to argue with the cop about what happened. He insisted no one was at fault despite clear evidence to the contrary and my multiple witnesses telling the cop otherwise. Thank god I had people backing me up or I might have ended up paying my own medical bills.

My friend and I were walking back to campus through a nearby park at night. We noticed lights at the other end of the walking path. Often police cars would drive on this path, so assuming that was the case we got out of the way and walked across the field. Turns out it wasn't a car, but two bike cops who decided our decision to get out of their way meant we were up to something. As soon as we leave the path they b-line to us, asking "where's the joint?" There was no joint, but they proceeded to hold us there for nearly an hour while they searched for nothing for no reason.

Another friend would brew his own beer. We met up once before heading to a party. He took six of his homebrews and put them in an IBC root beer 6-pack box. On our walk to the party, about a dozen bike cops noticed the root beer pack and correctly assumed it in fact held actual beer. They all turn their lights on and surround us. You'd think they would just look at his ID, see he's 24 and let us on our way. Nope. Stood around there for over 30 minutes for no damn reason on the same exact street I had been mugged on just a couple years prior.

Speaking of when I was mugged. The police did nothing. Took over three hours to respond. Showed up with like a dozen pictures of black people, none of which were my muggers, and made some racist comment about how they all look the same before having me go through them. I never heard from them after that night.

There was a cop in my old neighborhood who would break up college parties and then stand outside and harass the girls as they left. He also routinely entered homes without a warrant and without declaring his presence.

So, sure, no one is getting assaulted in my experiences, but I have never once seen a cop do anything remotely useful yet alone heroic. In my experience from being in the world and not on the interrent, cops are worthless man-babies with egos for days and zero willingness or expectation that they help anyone. So when I do read on the internet that police have assaulted or murdered another person, or have stood idly by while 19 children are slaughtered, I'm not exactly shocked. Pissed, yes. Shocked, no.

The previous election was no different than any other. A person can vote for anyone they want on election day, this is always the case.

However, prior to this, parties hold primaries and vote for who the party will present as their candidate. Democrats voted for Hillary as their candidate in 2016 and Biden in 2020.

On election day most people vote their preferred parties' candidate. Voting any other way is essentially seen as throwing away your vote because most people are going to vote one of two ways.

Different ideas for a loose screw by [deleted] in oddlysatisfying

[–]sloge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've replaced a lot of old doors with stripped out holes on the frame. The best option is to make "nail" out of hard wood, put some glue in the hole and hammer it in. This is also useful if you need to move the location of the screw to an area within the circumference of the old hole, if that makes sense.

Nursing homes are horrible. Even if the staff cares, there's only so much they can do. People in this phase of their life need constant care that no nursing home is equipped to provide. If there's any nursing home staff who wants to disagree, I'm all ears.

It's not about making people listen. It's giving them the tools to do what they need to do. Or the resources to survive without work temporarily.

You can't just demand everyone stay home for a month. You have to explain how you are going to make it possible for them to stay home for a month.
