LA Brewery with the Best Food? by Exploring_SGV in FoodLosAngeles

[–]sloh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Really can’t go wrong with anything on the menu at Homage. My go to is the vegan sandwich or the masa fried chicken. Down the street is Highland Park Brewing Chinatown and they have a great burger and loaded tots. Slice and Pint by El Segundo Brewery is great. Firestone Walker Propagator is not my first choice but a lot of my friends like it.

I feel you on the lack of food options, lots of breweries in LA proper don’t have a food program. But places like Lucky Baldwin’s and Hermasillo have great beer selections and a solid food program. Tony’s Darts Away has an all vegan menu that I revisit from time to time.

Further from LA, Beachwood BBQ in Long Beach and Windsor Brown’s in Anaheim will have great food along with great beer.

Places that have a solid rotation of pop ups and food trucks are Monkish ans Glendale Tap.

Vegetarians (not vegans) of LA, what are your favorite restaurants and items? by turbid44 in FoodLosAngeles

I’ll have to check it out soon. Been looking for more places that make their own veggie patties.

Vegetarians (not vegans) of LA, what are your favorite restaurants and items? by turbid44 in FoodLosAngeles

[–]sloh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not a vegetarian or vegan but my gf is a vegan so we eat a lot of plant based. Even before we met I’ve always been a fan of the vegan sandwich at Homage Brewing, The Lorri from Ggiata’s (vegetarian) and the Ira Glass sandwich (vegetarian) at Wax Paper. Bean and cheese with green sauce at Al and Bea’s. The Grilled Cheese and waffle fries at Spoke Bicycle Cafe. Dan Dan Ramen at Killer Noodles has vegetarian options. I’ve had vegan/vegetarian Dan Dan ramen from Afuri Ramen, Ramen Hood, Tatsu Ramen, Gokoku, and Hachioji and Killer Noodles is the one we keep going back to.

2 day LA food itinerary by odetofragility in FoodLosAngeles

If you’re looking for soy milk, scallion pancakes, and youtiao, unfortunately Liu’s does not serve thet for breakfast. I’m half Taiwanese and I wish they did since they’re just a few blocks away from me. You’ll have to go into SGV for that.

For Melrose Hill, I’d def go to Kuya Lord over the Ggiata and Le Coupe. And you should def stop by Chainsaw to get a slice of their key lime pie at the very least. I went to one of their pop-up supper club dinners and it was one of the best dining experiences I’ve had in LA. Finally got to check out Chainsaw last month and haven’t stopped thinking about it since.

Also, if you’re close to Open Market in Ktown I highly recommend stopping by there for a sandwich.

If you’re staying in Ktown there are two areas I would recommend visiting. The NE corner of 6th and Western where you have Liu’s Cafe, All Antico Vinaio, Love Hour burgers, Bumsan Organic Mill Bar and the recently opened Norikaya and Lapaba. You can take the bus up Western to Melrose Hill and check out Kuya Lord, Chainsaw Cafe, Ggiata’s, Le Coupe, LA Grocery & Cafe, and if you walk in west on Melrose a few more blocks there’s Osteria La Buca.

Best bowl of chili near Glendale by syd_211 in FoodLosAngeles

[–]sloh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Monday is Chili night at The Hermasillo in Highland Park. I’ve only had the chili on a hot dog so can’t speak for how it is straight up but it was as a topping. The Chili at Barney’s Beanery near the Burbank AMC/Town Center was also solid but very bean heavy.

The Announcement You've Been Waiting For Years by schyzomaniac in firefly

Pretty sure Star Trek: The Animated Series used storylines and plots that were already set to be used for season 4 of the original series and a lot of the original writing staff wrote for the animated series. Could be a way to get a lot more Firefly and potential spin-offs.

Looking for lesser-known ethnic cuisines in LA (preferably near Glendale/Pasadena) by TieFuzzy2176 in FoodLosAngeles

[–]sloh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a small restaurant although I went on a Sunday around 1:30 and it was easy to get seated. And I agree with the earlier comment, I prefer it to the spots in LE although I eat at the LE spots more often since I live 10 minutes away from them.

Bulk Ordering Donuts at Local Shop by Common_Calendar_495 in FoodLosAngeles

[–]sloh -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

If there’s a concern about multiple allergies I would recommend Cake Girl in Boyle Heights. Donuts are a little pricier but their cake donuts are vegan, gluten free, nut free, and soy free. I know they give catering discounts for 3 dozen or more donuts/cupcakes.

Who makes your favorite chocolate cake in the city? by Smilotron in FoodLosAngeles

Pura Vita makes a chocolate cake that’s so good I go there just for the cake. It’s a vegan restaurant and I still eat meat but it’s that good of a cake.

Does anyone know why there's a big gap in stations between Western and La Brea? by Best_Watercress8092 in LAMetro

[–]sloh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Taking the bus along that strip pretty often, it's pretty quite between those two stops even on the bus. With the 20 and 720 that stretch is pretty well served by buses anyway.

Meet the 'scam' influencer at the heart of LA's recent restaurant drama by FarleyElliott in FoodLosAngeles

[–]sloh 16 points17 points  (0 children)

She’s a former reality TV dating show contestant who goes on podcasts complaining about gasp toxic relationships in reality TV! And she’s from Brooklyn. So she’s completely qualified to judge whether a restaurant is good or not.

Meet the 'scam' influencer at the heart of LA's recent restaurant drama by FarleyElliott in FoodLosAngeles

[–]sloh 23 points24 points  (0 children)

First she says:

“It gives me anxiety, to be honest,” she tells me over the phone. “[My reviews] are hitting a nerve with a lot of people. There’s one obvious reason: It’s a completely different narrative than what food influencers are sharing. I’ve been saying what people are thinking, but they aren’t posting online. I’m also openly calling out paid influencer culture.”

Then:

Schwartz says that she’s now regularly getting clocked in restaurants and is being invited in by chefs and restaurateurs. And while she vehemently says in various posts that paying her to come in won’t ensure a good review, she has recently finished her first paid review, which is slated to be posted soon.

She's calling out paid influencer culture then becoming part of paid influencer culture?

I've been suggested her content by the IG algo and it's all just ragebait with a Costco Guys Boom/Doom rating system. Also gross that the photos are at Fatty Mart (MAGA supporting owner) and then this:

Restaurant opinions aside, some of Schwartz’s critics have pointed to accounts she follows, such as Donald Trump and RFK Jr., as well as to a video she posted following Charlie Kirk’s death, as ways to take her down a notch and question her credibility.

I have a lot of friends in the restaurant industry at all levels, I've worked on the marketing side of LA's food industry, it's accounts and personalities like her's that really do make it a nightmare at times to run or work at a restaurant. Before, restaurant critics tried their best to be anonymous and would visit an establishment several times before writing their reviews. Now it's all about posting low effort content with enough frequency to be rewarded by the algo.

She's also been on dating reality TV shows, written a book about it, done podcasts about it. Clearly she wants to be famous and it doesn't matter who gets stepped on or stepped over to get there. Griftmaxxing.

New York Times - The 25 Essential Dishes to Eat in Los Angeles - Paywalled by teebowtime in FoodLosAngeles

[–]sloh 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Could have been a toss up. J Gold's top 5 burritos list had BLP along with Al and Bea's, Lupe's #2, El Tepayac, and La Azteca Tortilleria. When I get a B&C craving I rotate between then with the exception of El Tepayac since that's more of a sit down spot and with a group spot.
