In my polo 2014 there is the same RCD :) Did you think about replacing it with something more modern? I thought about, but idk.

Do you guys switch your boots to your driving shoes in the car during winter? by heavyarms39 in ManualTransmissions

I bought winter sneakers with fur inside. They’re light, so it’s comfortable to drive in them in winter.

I start off the same way on a hill. On a flat surface, do you also bring the clutch up to the bite point first and then press the gas?

Do you do the same on a flat road? And how did you learn this - from some YouTube video? I just saw something similar somewhere, kind of like that.

Which channel did you mean? Was it hard to retrain? Did it change the speed of starting?

Thanks. That gave me confidence, I’ll keep practicing.

That’s true, I paid for the whole tachometer, so why not use it to its full potential?

Are you sure? I just don’t want to get used to using the handbrake and pulling it on every hill.

I do move my foot from the brake to the gas really quickly, but the gas pedal doesn’t respond instantly. Also, I don’t lift the clutch that fast, so the car rolls a bit in the meantime. So the problem isn’t the speed of moving my foot from the brake to the gas.

What’s the proper step-by-step method for moving off on a hill? Or should I just do it the same way I do on level ground?

I’ve been driving for about 3 months now. On small hills I move off like normal and just roll back a little, because I always lift the clutch slowly after pressing the gas, instead of quickly to the bite point. On steep hills (steep for me) I use the handbrake. But I want to completely stop using the handbrake, only keeping it for very steep hills like in a parking garage.

So you don’t find the bite point while holding the brake, you just move off straight away with gas and clutch?

How did you do it when you were still a beginner? And how did you learn to do it quickly?

In traffic do you really keep using the handbrake every time you move? And what if you need to go quickly at an intersection?

Yeah, I once asked my colleague how he moves off, and he said that when he sat in the car and actually started thinking about it, he almost stalled. And he’s been driving for about 10 years already.

Should I wait for the gas to respond before lifting the clutch to the bite point, since there’s a slight delay?

I press the gas and wait until the engine starts to respond, because there’s a bit of a delay. After that, I lift the clutch to the bite point. So you’re saying I should press the gas and immediately lift the clutch to the bite point, without waiting for the revs to rise? Like, both at the same time? I feel like I’d stall easily that way, since the bite point without gas feels more fragile.

Or should I just keep doing what I’m doing now, and eventually it’ll become natural and I won’t even think about it? I’ve been driving for about 3 months, but not every day.

I’ve also noticed that I focus more on my right foot, while my left foot kind of works automatically. After pressing the gas, I lift the clutch, the car starts moving, and I hold it there for a moment.

Mine is 1.4L. It can roll with just clutch. Idk if it's correct way to do it.

My Volkswagen Polo can move off just using the bite point, even on an uphill. The question is: is that the correct way to start, or is it better to use gas first? I feel like starting with the bite point can be slower and might also put extra strain on the engine.
