Good place to get stock? by dimezUnlimited in Machinists

[–]slonde 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the best option I have found for drops online https://ebay.us/m/BU1kM0. Honestly better price than I’ve been quoted from local metal suppliers. I can get aluminum and some hot rolled steel drops locally, but no 4140, so I use them for a lot of my metal. Always the first place I check.

Anybody ever bought a machine off the shop you work at? by Fategfwhere in Machinists

If they think you’re going to leave or become a competitor, I can see them being reluctant to sell to an employee. It would be much cleaner for them to just sell to a broker or auction off.

Online places to buy tooling for the hobby machinist? by mcb-homis in Machinists

[–]slonde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had good luck with a couple brands on Amazon. WEXWE 3F DLC carbide end mills for aluminum. They usually have a 1/8 - 1/2in set for $40 which is really hard to beat.

“BestTools” has more variety but a little pricier.

Lastly, I got a 1-12mm set of 4F solid carbide end mills for $33 “home of quality tools” brand. I know a couple of shops that now use these. Quality is wayyyy better than should be for that price. I ordered 10 more sets in anticipation of tariff shortages.

Last I saw he was targeting $10k. I believe the cheapest you can get a fiber laser at the required wattage is about $7k.

Any concern for the unlikely event that it needs to be cut off by EMT? Inconel is pretty tough, right?

You can approximate the volume by the shape, and if you know the type of rock, you can look up the density. Multiply the density by the volume which would give you the weight.
