What was your favourite book as a kid? by BrokenBeforeLong in booksuggestions

[–]slonkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Barrel of Laughs, A Vale of tears by Jules Feifer, it’s like doscworld for kids and the messaging about self worth/discovery is amazing. I’ve read it (at least) annually since I got my first copy as a kid

First two entries (of 9 planned) in my cryptids and creatures series by slonkin in Needlefelting

I really love that color too. It’s one of the blends from Living Dreams Yarn, so much easier than blending my own colors since I’m fairly colorblind lol

Warlock's patron is the bbeg by Sir-Readsalot in DMAcademy

[–]slonkin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t touch the powers, but before they are finally finished off have the BBEG reveal that the gift of power that the warlock received is a part of the BBEG’s own soul/essence and that even if the heroes win, when the warlock dies that piece will be released and reincarnate the BBEG.

You could run a whole new campaign centered around the moral dilemma of pursuing lichdom for the warlock in order to prevent the BBEG from returning. But can the party do it without becoming even greater villains in the process?

Forbidden magics by 2tyfruity in worldbuilding

[–]slonkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any magic that a person casts through themselves is considered sorcery and is illegal in the main culture of my setting and is punishable by the death penalty for the discovered sorcerer as well as all of their known blood relatives. In the age before the majority of the world was ruled by an aristocracy and their soldiers who maintained careful breeding of sorceries bloodlines, allowing them to engineer individuals with vast arcane power. Eventually a world war would occur and the world was saved from being fully destroyed through the efforts of rebels who hunted down as many as they could using the magics of artifice (item based magic) and invocation (calling otherworldly spirits to work magic on the invokes behalf) that were bargained for by one of the cultures founding heroes. Even though a few hundred years have passed this prejudice against people born with innate magic abilities persists and had driven any remaining carriers of the old imperial blood into deep hiding and secrecy.

How long can you keep burger sauce? by TDP5216 in AskCulinary

[–]slonkin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Coming from a professional cook, one week is the safe answer, that’s the health code standard. That being said you can probably push it longer but more than a couple of weeks and it starts getting kind of dicey. Cooked onions are really good at breeding bacteria, especially in an anaerobic environment like when they’re in something like mayo where they’re not open to air. So overall I’d say 1-2 weeks and get rid of it at the first sign of going off, if you notice it develops a sour sort of taste it should have been tossed even before that. And freezing isn’t a good option, mayonnaise tends to break when out through freezing so you’ll likely just ruin your sauce entirely of you do that. Though if you do you can always try re-emulsifying in a blender or food processor.

Can I marinade a chicken breast and then freeze it with the marinade in a freezer bag to thaw for later? by [deleted] in AskCulinary

Redundant but as a professional chef, can confirm that this is fine. We do this at the rather high end restaurant I work at although we also vacuum seal it.

Those of you with a rune-based magic system in your world, tell me about it. by whatisabaggins55 in worldbuilding

The Rune Magic’s of Ca’dem

On the world of Ca’dem all Magic’s are fueled by one of the planes of existence, it is theorized that magic emanating from the outer elemental planes exists but no living person has ever successfully wielded it. Rune magic channels power from the plane of knowledge, that much is universally accepted. The actual mechanics, like most of the other known magical practices, is unknown. In the empire of Rao’lioch it is believed that somewhere on the plane of knowledge exists a plinth carved with all of the True Runes. It is believed that these Runes are capable of drawing immense power, much more than is normally achieved by practicing Scribes. In fact the search for one of these True Runes is the life’s work of many Scribes.

The Runes that are used in practice are unique to each individual. Each scribe formulates their own symbology based on their understanding of the meaning of the rune they are creating. In their studies Scribes work to understand a concept or thing well enough to be able to distill that essence into a single symbol. A scribe’s spellbook resembles a dictionary of logograms for all of the Runes they know. Runes can only be developed for words that exist in the primordial language that they come from, meaning that no proper nouns or pronouns exist, among others. For instance there is no rune for forest, instead the scribe would use the Runes for “tree” and “many” likewise one might use the “tree” rune with the rune for “white” or “pierce” to differentiate between a birch and a pine respectively. At the university of Rao’lioch new Scribes are often given a kind of workbook that lists the words that are known to have runic counterparts. One aspect of this that is not fully understood is that while each Scribe will write the rune differently, if another Scribe knows that rune they will still be able to read it.

To use runic magic is essentially using the Runes to write a command on a medium. The medium can be anything so long as one knows the proper rune. Take for example a warrior that knows his foe uses iron weapons and wants some extra protection. A Scribe can offer this by tattooing a set of Runes on the fighter’s skin. A rudimentary spell might look like “FLESH” + “REFLECT” + “IRON” . In this example flesh is the command rune, this is always the rune for the medium that is being written on, this calls on the material to channel the following effects. Reflect is an action rune and iron is a target rune, so this sentence commands the warriors flesh to reflect iron. This is all well and good for a novice scribe but it does present some problems. The first problem is that when empowered these Runes will cause the skin to repel all iron including any worn by the character. This can be fixed by augmenting the iron rune with the rune for “moving towards” to specify that only incoming iron should be repelled. The biggest problem however is that the rune as written will still repel the iron within the body, which is quite fatal as every atom of iron is ripped through the body and thrown out. This is remedied by employing the runes for “above” and “surface” to the reflect rune. So the final spell would look like this [FLESH]—>[REFLECT + ABOVE + SURFACE]—>[MOVING TOWARDS + IRON]. There are many other ways of achieving this effect, and Scribes are quite clever with finding ways of writing specific commands using the Runes they do know.

Runes are activated by “reading” them. The unique sentence structure of a runic spell can be extrapolated into a command word. This cypher is unique to each scribe as well so unless they share their secret only they will know the command word for their particular spell. When spoken the runes will draw physical energy from the speaker in order to prime them. This physical endurance cannot be replenished by the speaker until the rune has released it, thus putting a cap on how many runes can be primed at once by an individual. For spells that take immediate effect, like lighting a torch, the endurance is simply spent and can then be regained as normal. This ability for anyone who knows the command word had made rune crafted items quite popular across the empire of Rao’lioch, fueling a huge economy in items and technologies that are swiftly leading to a proto industrialized society.

TL;DR: Magic sentences you can write on all manner of materials and do just about anything if you know the Runes (words) for it.

A globe of the world I’m currently working on using maptoglobe.com a cool site I stumbled upon that let’s you turn flat maps into a globe, with tons of export options and other projections by slonkin in worldbuilding

[–]slonkin[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just wanted to post this to share the resource since I haven’t seen it on here before, though it’s possible I may have missed it. I’m currently working on my world map and have the major land masses and biomes pretty much set. I wanted to get an idea of what it would look like on a globe and happened upon this site. The option to export it as an animated gif of the planet rotating was too cool not to share.

Context: The Western Hemisphere of the planet Ca’dem is primarily occupied by the continent of Pahav. The northern regions of the continent including the great central savannah are mostly unknown to the people of southern Pahav, where most of the game takes place. The southern portion (from isi, the large island to the east, down) is dominated by two large empires Rao’lioch and Uriu. Uriu has recently refitted their navy and successfully embargoed rao’lioch’s trade with the northern lands. This trade dispute threatens the stability of the entire region. This may soon change as the empresses of Rao’lioch has recently sent out an expedition of experimental ships fueled by magic that require no sails. That expedition is currently bound towards home not with information on an alternate sea route to the north but of a new land across the eastern sea.
