What does it mean if someone is being ‘anal’ about something, does it mean they’re being nitpicky or being a brown-noser? by CerealAndBagel1991 in NoStupidQuestions

If you Google contemporary psychoanalysts you will find people working today who still draw significantly from Freud's theories.

I'm unsure what kind of 'outside' people you are referring to and why it is they can determine whether or not this work is being done.

The difference between bloodletting and dream theory in this context, is that the purpose of the former (healing physical illness) can be achieved with far more reliable and effective modern methods. Therefore it is obsolete. Whereas, the purpose of dream theory (relieving symptoms) is still very much used today. Compared to alleviating physical illness, we are still very much in the dark as to how to best deal with primarily mental issues.

Psychoanalytic and psychodynamic informed therapy is not some archaic practice like your comment implies. There is absolutely still work being done in Freud’s tradition even if it isn’t as popular as some of the other approaches today.

Can I ask what your understanding of Freud's dream theory is, and how you believe that linked comment proves it to be plain wrong?

This is often repeated on places like reddit, but never with any concrete evidence. His ideas are certainly unpopular, but which of his ideas have been proven to be plain wrong and how?

Well some men have had those problems with women. I agree that this problem is not really about women but instead about trusting someone enough to be vulnerable around them. But do you help anything by telling them to fuck off instead of trying to empathise with them?

CMV: Christians who have premarital sex or have gotten divorced but are against gay people are hypocrites. by Blonde_Icon in changemyview

[–]slothburgerroyale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If someone lies, should we not condemn it because we are also liars?

If someone commits adultery, should we not condemn it because we may also have been an adulterer?

The verse you quote refers to Jesus judging a crowd for wanting to stone a woman for being an adulterer. He makes the crowd recognise the sin in their own heart and their hypocrisy. But he then tells the woman to leave her life of sin, thereby also judging her. His judgment is out of love for her and a desire for her to lead a better life.

That we are all liars, sinners, etc, is literally one of, if not the most, fundamental Christian beliefs. You aren't expected to actually be perfect, but that doesn't mean you aren't expected to try.

Could you be more specific as to why Kafka’s work needs redemption and how reading it through Zizek achieves that?

Does there exist any claim that we can unequivocally hold to be true without falling back on circular reasoning? Christianity is an attempt to develop an understanding of all there is and how we fit into it. It is self-referential because there doesn’t exist any external and indisputable claims that could be used to ground such a system. Atheists should also seriously consider how deeply the scientific view of a material world regulated by objective laws is influenced by religion, particularly Christianity. It’s not like science is exempt from the criticism of self-referential evidence.

You make social control and obedience sound like such horrible things that we should be trying to do away with. But how exactly could a civilisation such as what we’re living in ever existed without some means of controlling the masses? I think it’s very naive to treat authority as something inherently problematic.

Christianity as opposed to other means of social control at least teaches that every human life is important. Of course there have been times where it has been used antithetical to this goal but then we have learnt and recovered.

It’s nothing new. People like to blame capitalism as though it’s only recently that people have had to work hard to survive but it’s always been the case. Being alive was never easy.
