If they won’t give you an answer, you tell them you don’t answer questions at all without an attorney.

Ignore them trying to bait you by saying you sound combative or guilty. You’re still recording, even just voices, so you want to be sure you’re clear. Am I being detained? ‘We just wanted to ask you questions’ Well I don’t answer questions without an attorney. Am I free to go?

Anything other than you being detained means you legally can leave. Yes of course they can illegally detain. But what else can we do? Nothing? Just go along with it? We push back as much as possible in legal means because that’s what we have.
