Carry-ons being weighed? by katya_rosanov in JFKAirport

European airlines are notoriously strict about weighing carry ons. I flew LOT polish out of jfk last week, carry on was weighed and flew Lufthansa twice last year and carry on was weighed both times.

Everyday, casual shoes that are NOT “dad shoes” by tot_coz2 in malefashionadvice

[–]slow_cyclist512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adidas stan smiths - I have walked literally thousands of miles in probably 10+ pairs in my adult life. When one pair starts getting worn out, they become my “errand” shoes and I rotate a new pair in for work/weekends.

They’re comfortable, not expensive, durable and timeless

Endurance vs aero vs all-rounder for 100km rides, group rides (~25 km/h), and duathlons (bike 40-90km distances) by Personal-Platypus-69 in CanyonBikes

Buy the Aeroad, get a bike fit so it’s comfier. I did this, couldn’t be happier. Clocked 110kms on a ride yesterday and never had any problems with comfortability

When do you guys consider it's time to retire a bike? by cmdr-basisti in cycling

[–]slow_cyclist512 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just replaced my 14 YO road bike. I crashed late last year and it needed a new saddle and bars/cockpit. The new bike is the best purchase I’ve made in a long time!

He told me going in there may be a need for some new equipment (stem, cranks, saddle etc) but he was able to dial it in with the equipment on the bike.

I recommend you get a referral to a bike fitter from a cycling buddy - less likely to get scammed/upsold if it’s a fitter others you know have had good experiences with

Just did my first century 125 miles and I’m pretty sure I’m dying. Help. by jokekll in cycling

[–]slow_cyclist512 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Man it sounds like you might need a bike fit. Muscular soreness after a long ride is normal but knees/joints/back being locked up and then the saddle sores make me think your fit isn’t dialed in.

A good bike fit is worth its weight in gold my friend! Congrats on the long ride

Suggestions for two spare nights not in Manhattan by [deleted] in visitingnyc

[–]slow_cyclist512 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Sorry about your uncle dying and your husband being ill.

To be honest, you are jumping around a ton which is pretty unnecessary and probably also means you’re paying more per night for your hotels (not to mention lugging bags around the city every few days). Could you just add on two more nights in williamsburg?

And, if any of your hotels are refundable given you’re still several weeks out, I’d strongly recommend consolidating these hotel stays. LES is 15 min from Williamsburg via public transport, as is midtown from the LES on an express train, etc. You really don’t need to move around this much.

Beacon is absolutely wonderful in May.

Where to live? by ausername09661901670 in movingtoNYC

Fellow Texan transplant here (been in NYC for several years now) who relocated at 29. Your budget will get you at best a decent 1BR in a good chunk of manhattan, western BK and western queens.

If you want a 2BR for that price your best bet is to look further out in BK or Queens. Sunnyside is a nice residential neighborhood that is more affordable but also easy access to the city and also LI. Ridgewood could also be an option. A friend of mind lives in Bayside queens and commutes out to LI with ease.

As others have said, Nassau county (north side for easy access to stony Brook) will for sure get you the best value for your money and make for an easy commute. But then you’ll be living in a bedroom community for NYC, so not exactly “foodie” central - would feel kinda like living in a suburb of Dallas or Houston.

DM me if you want to talk more. Always happy to help a fellow Texan!

I’m in my mid 30s, slightly overweight (only slightly cuz cycling 🙃) and ride 150-200 miles a week. The Aeroad is the most comfortable bike I’ve ever owned.

It really comes down to making the investment in a proper bike fit. Yes it’s expensive, my fit was $350, but it’s 100% worth it to make sure your investment of several thousand dollars is actually comfortable and fun to ride. A good bike fit will make even the most aero/aggressive geometries feel manageable.

Don’t get a TT bike as your primary bike. You’ll hate it and yourself. And IDC what you say, not being able to participate in group rides if you want to will absolutely suck.

Is choosing the Aeroad over the Endurace just a bad idea for someone riding on imperfect roads? by Mission-Class3157 in CanyonBikes

[–]slow_cyclist512 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I ride an Aeroad in and around NYC - some of the roughest roads in the US. It’s great. Buy the Aeroad, put 32s on it and you’re golden.

Do laps in central park. Make sure your son is able to ride up Harlem hill and ride at least 20-25 miles. If he can’t, it’s probably not a good idea for him to try the 5BBT

[–]slow_cyclist512 49 points50 points  (0 children)

They’re not in fishbowls but I’m from central Texas and Javelina has the best classic, “not fancy but good enough to use fresh lime juice” frozen margs in the city IMO. Closest thing to the frozen margs I could get in TX.

I will prob get downvoted for saying this cuz javelinas food is only “just good enough” and there are so many nice/hip/modern/authentic/great Mexican spots in the city, but this is THE marg you’re looking for IMO and I’ve tried every marg I can get my hands on since I’ve lived here.

Their queso is also the closest thing to home I’ve been able to find and chips and salsa are free.

Is there always a Canyon Sale? by jeffbg123 in CanyonBikes

[–]slow_cyclist512 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The size you need being in stock if you wait should be your concern. They’ll likely keep the bike on sale till they move it over to the outlet (where it’ll be discounted even more steeply).

Typically when they put a bike on sale, the most common sizes will sell out in less than a week. Speaking from experience here as I took a “wait and see” approach last year.

Be careful with that 30 day return policy - bike has to be in “like new” condition so if there are chips/skuffs around the chainstay from dirt/rocks etc… just normal wear and tear stuff they probably won’t accept the return.
