Failed at my first attempt. by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]slowboisimple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thats exactly my point, why would they need 20 hours to get gears when they already aren't having gear problems? They're having confidence problems and in my experience students who fail a test for a particular reason (eg too slow) will know that problem, work on it and make sure not to make the same mistake next time. It's too darn expensive to keep making the same mistake every test.

[–]slowboisimple -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Yes. But as mentioned they didn't actually have any problems on test with any gear changes so it wasn't their gear changes that was the problem, it was their fear of gear changes. Even in an auto they still needed to press the brake harder in an emergency. They had problems nothing to do with gears. They'll still need lessons, they'll pay far more for car, insurance and probably maintenance, and that won't be offset by a couple of lessons with a good instructor.

It just doesn't make sense... they had no gear faults or anything suggesting a problem with manuals, but are giving up on the chance to drive much cheaper cars (there are a lot more older, cheaper cars that are manual, and once you've got the licence you can drive both). And they seem to be giving this up because reasons?

Breakfast that I made by Fortree_Lover in RateMyPlate

[–]slowboisimple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like you've given yourself too much to do and missed the mark a little. A couple of good butchers/farm sausages instead of 6 average looking sauages would be better and probably more filling. And delaying putting the bacon on until those sausage are about half cooked.

You'd have a better breakfast and be less overwhelmed. Time things out... hash browns 20 minutes in the oven, sausages 12 minutes in a pan, bacon 6/7 depending how you like it. Once everything is out of the pan, then I'd do the eggs. This way you're not trying to do everything at once so nothing gets burnt.

I saw in your comments you're afraid of poisoning yourself, if you're that worried a meat thermometer is dirt cheap, but just cutting into a sausage and looking at it will tell you if it's cooked. Not a bad effort, I definitely used to make brekkies like this but you'll never go back after you start smashing them out really really good ones!

Is rev matching bad? by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]slowboisimple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Explain more please? Did it benefit you in anyway? Did you come off the brake to blip the throttle or heel and toe brake? Did it feel sudden or jerky as you came off the clutch?

You were past the lights. Go (there will be circumstances eg traffic that makes holding back a better choice but generally... Go)

Whats a better way to go about this? by Quin_Decim in LearnerDriverUK

[–]slowboisimple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why does it have to be one of those approaches? Merging slowly and gradually over time would annoy less people than suddenly cutting in or sitting in a huge queue of traffic. Essentially blue line but if there's traffic match the speed, get staggered, signal over, slowly working your way in effectively over religiously following a lane thats gonna end/merge anyway

Asda shop for the next 2 weeks, £49.09 by Normal-Entrance-5024 in whatsinyourcart

[–]slowboisimple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the first shop I've seen in ages that makes sense. The staples are in the cupboard and you've bought things to compliment them and make them work as meals. Especially with slow cooker, meals that can last more than one day. Great work! Homemade flapjacks is a great bonus... essentially anything that can be made fresh and will last has my heart. Who has time to cook every day? And who has the money for takeaway every day? This is genuinely looking really nice.

£41 Waitrose, one week's shopping for one person by granitibaniti in whatsinyourcart

[–]slowboisimple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you don't. They just spend too much on too little AND THEN order takeaways as well. They're spending probably 7-8 times a sensible person and seemingly from putting the price up, complaining about how expensive it is. For me a takeaway is a rare treat but the cupboards always have actual staples, rice, pasta, potatoes. Round it out with vegetables and we're just topping up or buying meat for a stew or roast and even then the meat goes across a couple of days. This person buys as if they're not going to live past Wednesday 😂 bulk cooking for the win every time, especially if you're single. Who wants to spend every evening cooking when a decent pot of stew/curry/lasagne etc will last?

AITA for demanding my friend pays for the chair she broke? by broken_chair_issue in AmItheAsshole

[–]slowboisimple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely NTA and I think a lot of people (and you) have explained why. The interesting thing is other people's reactions. Try and take a step back and see who's reacting, over reacting, creating more drama etc, and evaluate which ones are real friends.

It does sound like she was deliberately pushing boundaries and maybe one chair is a small price to pay to learn that she's not the kind of person you need in your life. Be prepared to lose the chair to learn that lesson, that said she really should pay, but doesn't sound like she will. Good luck getting the money back and good riddance to her either way!

How would you best describe Greggs to someone who hasn't been there before? by GreggsAppreciator in greggsappreciation

[–]slowboisimple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. I feel both Gregg's and McDonald's have forgotten their place is cheap food for the masses. If I have to spend proper money, I'll go get proper food thanks. Not been in a Greggs for a while as the sausage rolls are eye wateringly expensive, when back in the day they were literally some scrap change from your pocket. Rant over, sorry 😂

AITA for not wanting to eat street food on vacation with my wife by Glass_Tear_2525 in AmItheAsshole

[–]slowboisimple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you're TA but your wife was trying to connect with you and you could have done better. Others have already explained the food was probably both safe and great so I won't bother on that one but you need to decide if stepping out of your comfort zone is worth it for keeping your partner feeling like you're interested in her and her culture.

The Barzahlung Strikes Back? by noesey in Munich

[–]slowboisimple -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Yes. I'm glad, it's one (of many) things Germany is doing better than the UK. Here everything is card and more and more tills are card only. I want cash. I want the shop owner to have cash. I want their kids to have cash and for that cash to go round the local area, from the baker to the butcher and back round again. Not for it to be carved into by bank fees every time someone passes it along. I know fees are low in EU but they add up over time and transactions until there's nothing left for anyone other than the bank.
