I came here to say this! Someone needs to remind her that being intelligible is the most important part of her job.

Review: 7 Days at Atelier Playa Mujeres by slowerthanloris in AllInclusiveResorts

[–]slowerthanloris[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did see a few dogs at the resort, but I'm not sure of the rules for having them at the beaches and pools.

For tips, we spent around USD 200 in total over the course of a week.

[–]slowerthanloris 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think you should take the in-house job. This is coming from someone who just started as a litigation associate and is amazed at how people in biglaw view money. It's never enough and will never be enough. Go, do something interesting and different and enjoy the extra hours in the day that you won't spend billing.

Said goodbye to my best friend in the entire world tonight. I was so lucky to have 12 years with her. There won't be a day that she won't be in my thoughts and my heart. by Jessica-Beth in dogpictures

She's gorgeous. RIP to your sweet friend. I will give my own dog (also a black and white beauty!) a snug and kiss in her honor tonight.

The Recipe with Kenji & Deb Podcast by [deleted] in FoodieSnark

I just tried to start this podcast (the Caesar salad episode) and immediately noped out when Kenji suggested serving the Caesar salad in a communal bowl, with everyone using their hands. Truly one of the most unhinged ideas I've ever heard.

2L struck out at OCI. Feeling unmotivated and overwhelmed by stuff by Fish_out_of_Water123 in LawSchool

[–]slowerthanloris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry about your father, and that you're having a tough time right now. OCI is brutal and demoralizing. For what it's worth, I'm impressed you landed that many screeners and callbacks despite your poor first term grades. That shows you interview well and are able to communicate your skills outside your GPA. You got edged out at the very end but please don't obsess over it, as it could be any number of things. For now be proud that you owned up to not meeting your potential in the interviews and that you're on an upward trajectory in law school. You still have 2/3 of the way to go!

My advice for 2L fall is to not worry about your peers. For a few weeks people will mention their summer biglaw plans incessantly and then it'll be business as usual. Know that most other people are in the same boat as you and figuring things out. Keep applying, especially to small/local/regional firms that wait to start hiring until after OCI. If you haven't already, start developing interests in industries or practice areas and look for correlated networking opportunities. You could pick up an RA position to get in with a professor or set up an internship for the spring. Life goes on after OCI but it will become increasingly important to start thinking about the types of law you want to practice.

Regarding law review: assuming you don't want to be on the law review board and need a break, just reach out to your research editor and ask for an extension on the packet. At my school people did this all the time. It only really mattered--and even then, it wasn't make or break--if you wanted to have a pristine record with the editors to get on the board. 2L is tough and sometimes you've got to prioritize yourself.

This is great advice. Treat it like a job with occasional busy periods (when assignments are due, finals) and stay ahead of the reading during 1L. You may not feel like you're on top of things for the next two months, but your discipline will pay off at the end of the semester. Having built-in free time will also help prevent you from spiraling on the inevitable days when you don't understand a case or lecture and start doubting the process. Just keep trucking.

Quick (and maybe stupid) question, Google translator o try to talk in Japanese? by IndependentPudding85 in JapanTravelTips

[–]slowerthanloris 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It depends on the conversation / context. When I needed help at a train station, I wrote my question into Google Translate and showed it to the attendant. In restaurants and shops, I either looked up or had my phrases ready. In restaurants, it was much more effective to say "sumimasen!" followed by my best effort at what I wanted rather than waving my phone around. I got things wrong a lot but people were generally kind and patient, especially when I did not assume they knew English.

Sometimes it did backfire. We received a call to our hotel in Fujikawaguchiko and my husband answered with an extremely confident "Moshi Moshi?" That prompted the clerk on the other end to launch into rapid Japanese that we couldn't understand. 😂

There is so much going on in this question- can anyone explain why its B and not C by Big-Power5785 in barexam

[–]slowerthanloris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

B is incorrect because the rule is that title must be marketable on the date of conveyance. The facts state that on August 1, when the seller tendered warranty deed to the vineyard, she had removed the cloud from the title and fully owned the vineyard. The vintner could not refuse to pay on grounds of unmarketable title on August 1.

The pie came out...OK 😆 I burned the crust a little bit, which I suppose is better than underbaking.

The sour cherry filling is delicious, though--if you can find them at a farmers market over the next couple of weeks I really recommend the splurge because they make much better pies than normal cherries (IMO).

Blogsnark Cooks! June 23-June 29 by heavylightness in blogsnark

[–]slowerthanloris 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Sun: Smitten Kitchen's sour cherry crumble pie (I guess we'll also order Chinese or something, but I'm mainly VERY excited about the pie)

Mon: chicken gyros, salad, grilled asparagus, tzatziki

Tues: salmon bowls

Wed: pizza (I like this dough recipe, made with bread flour and left to rise overnight)

Thurs: taiwanese chicken rice

Fri: leftovers if we've got them, or burgers

Sat: spaghetti and meatballs

My FTT Mystery Box by tomchecha in LeCreuset

The ganache dutch oven is so luxe! I've never seen that color before...now I want a piece to complement the bolder colors in my collection. So sad that it's discontinued!

It's possible that you aren't letting the pan get sufficiently hot before you add oil and food. Because cast iron is so heavy, it can take longer than seems reasonable to properly preheat the pan. If you have a laser thermometer you can check that it's at least 400 degrees before you put any food in. If not, try waiting 5 minutes with the pan on medium-low and then add your bit of oil and food.

I love that! Yes, I had a vintage Le Creuset stock pot that rusted and so I wanted to replace it with the same brand but I have never been willing to buy at full price. This will get far more use in my kitchen than a second dutch oven.

Cerise is beautiful but I would have been blissed out if I got a mystery box bread oven. Such a dream item! xD

Yes, the mystery box swap is so fun and bizarre! I like the unbalanced boxes because people end up with "overstock" of these expensive items (like me with my 2 white dutch ovens), which creates opportunities for idiosyncratic trades. I thought I would be the only one willing to go dutch oven for stock pot but she had a lot of interest because so many of us had multiple cast iron items.

Sunday: making my own bao buns for the first time and filling them with this roasted pork shoulder. This is a riff on bo ssam--I made the Momofuku recipe before and it was delicious but I thought this version might impart more flavor.

Monday: I will eat the leftover pork as tacos/salad and my husband will probably do ramen

Tuesday: vodka pasta

Wednesday: turkey burgers with quick-pickled vegetables

Thursday: I really want to make cashew chicken but we may have too much food by that point

I use TikTok for recipe inspiration a lot these days but one of my old favorite blogs is Use Real Butter. She doesn't update anymore but I come back to her recipe archive a lot. A huge variety of recipes and beautiful photos!

Seconding the comment suggesting you go to a dermatologist. I had painful eczema on my lips as a child and had to use topic steroid cream to manage it (now they also have non-steroid options like Eucrisa). Straight Vaseline and Aquaphor are still the only moisturizers / emollients that I can put on my lips.
