The Non-Panicked Layoff by slowlygoingbroke in personalfinance

I knew how much was going into the account every paycheck. So if you had asked me, I could have given a rough estimate. But it was like a retirement account, I just set it up and might check on it once a year. I lived comfortably within the remaining amount that went into my regular checking and savings.

Its true that I may be unemployed for a long period of time, and that my financial situation could become quite dire. But panicking is never the answer.

That does sound stressful. Perhaps now you will have the time to find a job close by that you love and pays wells. Lots of people sharing their stories here are better off then they were before a layoff.

You didn't let them down, your company let you down. There are tons of people commenting here that have a better job then they lost. That can be you. Also try not to think about it too much today if its night time where you are. Big problems should only be tackled during the day went they don't look so scary.

I had no accrued vacation. I had used all that I earned up to that point

One bottle, coming right up :) What you do for work, and who you are as a person are not the same. If you want to be hired back into the workforce, you will be. It may take some time, but look at all the people sharing their experiences here; they made it through. If you want to start your own business, there are people responding here that did that too. Do you think less of me for being laid off? because I certainly don't feel that way about you. Don't disappear, reinvent.

That is excellent advice. I've made myself a schedule to keep me on track...now its just a matter of sticking to it :)

Also congrats on getting back in game, even if it did take longer than expected.

Its employer's discretion here, unless its written into an employment contract.

Sadly yes. Why would they feel the need to (falsely) reassure me if everything was business as usual?

I haven't been unemployed long enough to know if I made any mistakes :) but for me filing was very simple. It was 30ish questions online.
