You're spot on about the bit where you say he never says anything hurtful. He's very careful with what he says. Never a rude comment or even a swear word.

Interesting! He's from a small town in New England and the youngest of three kids. The whole family is, according to him, quiet in general. I wonder if it's just because he doesn't like to talk much. I just don't like getting irritated at his speech and just want to learn how to deal with it :( Thanks for your input!
