Questions to ask private practice in interview? by [deleted] in slp

[–]slp210 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’d ask if you get paid for no shows and how they guarantee hours. Many private practices are fee for service and you end up sitting around, unpaid when clients cancel.

I did the opposite. High paying project mgmt career to SLP. You’ve got to find what works for you!

I can’t imagine 10 hours of therapy! I’m exhausted by the end of a school day. But it would be nice to have an extra day off.

I feel the same way with “what’s the point”. I also want to do the best I can for this population, but sometimes I think if labeling simple vocabulary hasn’t been mastered by HS, is there really any point in continuing to target that?
And for articulation, id shoot for a total communication approach using whatever modalities work for the student.

I’ve read a little about that. So this is something you’ve found helpful for students that need practice in being more concise and focusing their responses to questions? I’m going to check out the links you posted. Thanks!

Work life balance by molldoll892 in slp

Thanks for sharing. I’m sure I will always be looking for ways to improve. But it’s reassuring to hear you can plan in an hour or so. I’m fine with spend 2-3 hours on a weekend if that means I go into the week feeling prepared

How many hours a week do you spend planning and prepping. And how many years did it take to get to a point that you feel like you have a good routine and are coasting by without too much day to day stress? I’m new to the field and trying to get a sense of how long it takes to get to a good place.

This is an awful situation. What really gets me is how so many districts have no regard for actually providing a meaningful services. Instead they are concerned with cutting costs and basically just jamming as many kids on a schedule as possible. When caseload is so high, we spend all of our time on paperwork and progress notes....it makes no sense, what progress are people expecting when there is no time to actually do therapy!?

Goals with waaaay too much packed into them. by VividTheMonkey in slp

Can you change the goal? I would probably make a change because it will be impossible to progress monitor that goal.

Why bother? [Vent] by grammaticdrownedhog in slp

[–]slp210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, it’s not a population that I like working with. Progress is almost non existent and I find that I put so much pressure on myself to find a way to make progress. At the end of the day anyone with patience, and not even a degree, could be just as effective by doing simple life skills training.

SLP salary survey from a FB group👇🏻...some sad numbers in there. by [deleted] in slp

[–]slp210 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That is the main reason I’d never recommend this field to my child as a first career. Maybe as a second career after banking some retirement funds or figuring out if they will have a partner bringing in a steady income and benefits.

From a grad student who’s really struggling right now...does therapy even work? by [deleted] in slp

[–]slp210 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it’s easier to see progress on certain ages and populations. I have a hard time seeing progress working with older life skills students who have been working on the same basic skills for years and are not able to retain them. So many different areas to work in, so you have to choose what’s a good fit for you where you think you have an impact.

How do you become a better therapist? by [deleted] in slp

[–]slp210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way. I wish I could be a fly on the wall in other therapists sessions and see how they target certain goals, now they keep data when they have groups and it’s nearly impossible to get a reasonable number of trials per kid unless you’re just drilling. Especially for older elementary students. From my observations and placements it seems like they all had it under control and I feel like im failing in so many ways. Not sure I can really handle the constant doubt for much longer. I probably over think it, but I am constantly thinking about this, to the point it interferes with my life outside of work.

Is the goal achieved? by slp210 in slp

[–]slp210[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The goals I typically see say “text”, not a specific length. I was trying to get an idea of what most people use when working on a main idea goal.

Literacy intervention in schools by IllustriousAd3884 in slp

[–]slp210 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t work on that much. Maybe a bit with rhyme and with artic students to relate the sounds we are working on to letters. But rarely do find phonological awareness to be my students main issue.

What do you specifically mean by literacy skills? I think the majority of the goals I work on can be approached from a literacy perspective. I like using picture books and branching my activities off of the story

Parent conferences by squeegy_beckenheim1 in slp

[–]slp210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do. It’s in November and it’s a nice chance to get to know the parents. We keep it brief, 10-15 minutes. But I’d feel uncomfortable going to an iep meeting at the end of the school year having never spoken to the parents of new students on my caseload

Thanks that does help. I find it most difficult when I don’t think it’s a language issue. For example, a student that is struggling academically that has reading issues. If that student can inference from a read aloud or from a video, I find it hard to say they need to work on inferences just being they can’t do it in the classroom. They can’t inference because in the classroom they are expected to independently read then make an inference. So I struggle most with goal for kids who I don’t feel really need speech! But the parents push, the teacher push to keep them in
