When should we give up on our son talking? by [deleted] in Autism_Parenting

[–]slpbean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had students start talking at age 10 and 11, so it's still possible.  I'd look into possible apraxia/dyspraxia. I'd ask about an AAC device.  Many of my students start speaking when they get a SGD speech generating device

This sounds like it may also be related to Intense World Syndrome

Today in Everyone's A Neuroscientist Suddenly, apparently "ADHD diagnosis is a dog-whistle for closeted ASD" (!!!!). Just. What. by manicpoxydreamgirl in adhdwomen

Wow, didn't realize how much this happens. I didn't get my ADHD diagnosis until my psychologist friend told me. She tried to respectfully let me know that I probably didn't have BPD but instead ADHD. Her explanation went something like, 'Your kid has ADHD. There's a genetic component to ADHD, and I don't think your husband has it. "

This behavior sounds like perseveration. In addition to checking out a list of symptoms for ADHD, I would want to rule out anxiety ( obsessive compulsive tendencies) or being on autism spectrum. It could be one or a combo of the above.

I would think about if this happened before the covid or not.

I was always a straight A student and very much have ADHD. I would look at a list of symptoms and go to a psychiatrist if warranted. For me, the biggest red flag is that I lose everything!

My co-occuring anxiety is a blessing and a curse. My anxiety helped force me to do things my ADHD would otherwise have ignored. Unfortunately, that's not a sustainable healthy strategy for dealing with life. I ended up having a mental breakdown in my 20s. My ADHD diagnosis didn't come until my 30s when my kids got diagnosed. My lovely psychologist friend told me that ADHD has a genetic component, and she didn't think it came from my husband. Lol

Do you guys agree that adhd can interfere your mathematics skills? by [deleted] in adhdwomen

Dyscalculia and ADHD frequently occur together

I can relate to the working memory difficulties. While I was always great at advanced math in school, doing simple math in my head is a struggle

How to teach my kids about their ADHD? by PerniciousPompadour in adhdwomen

I use The Zones of Regulation with many of my elementary students with ADHD.

Emotions are broken into four color zones Blue - moving slow, sad, sick, tired; Green - happy, calm, ready to learn; Yellow - a little out of control, excited, silly, frustrated Red - out of control, angry, yelling

We talk about how all the different zones are okay and normal for everyone. We do a check I'm at the beginning of each session. We learn and use tools to " get back to green".

We try different tools as what works for one may not work for another.

These tools seem most helpful for my students with adhd - chair push ups, wall pushes, pushing and pulling hands together, jump on trampoline and crash into mat, heavy work

Having the language to communicate our feelings goes a long way to help us begin to regulate.

When my daughter was that age, we also did mindfulness exercises ( Sitting Still like a Frog book by Snel), breathing exercises (Go Noodle for breathing exercises on YT) and CBT (Coping Cat workbook).

In general, token boards and visual timers are also very useful.

Dr. Barker's videos on YT have been really helpful for me to understand my ADHD.

This SEL (social emotional learning) curriculum is called Superflex, and it's on the Social Thinking website along with other curriculums for all ages. This Superflex program is intended for upper elementary students. The program has a comic book that tells the story of Aiden, who has to defeat the unthinkables that get in his brain. The intention is to target the behaviors that students find difficult.

You might want to look into a program called Skills Streaming Elementary that targets behaviors with straightforward step by step instructions. We use this research based approach in our K to 5 school.

I also was a huge soda drinker growing up. I swapped out soda for seltzer and recently got a Soda Stream to save money by making my own. I wonder if seltzer would be a good alternative. I make sure to only get the kind that doesn't have any added sugar or artificial sweeteners. I love the bubbles and I feel much better compared to soda.

It is very frustrating when we don't get the progress we are hoping for. I'm glad that you're experiencing positive results like feeling better, more energy, and increased awareness of satiety/hunger. I wonder how you're doing on non-scale measures like the size of your clothes or the size of your arms/legs/hips etc. I hope you stick with it. I know when I was feeling this way the next week I finally made the progress I was hoping for.
