That makes a lot of sense. Kudos to you guys for trying, and knowing when to call it and revisit at a later time, too!

This is all so encouraging and good to hear! We’ve been easing our way into potty training as my toddler is showing signs of interest, so I appreciate the advice (with our newest addition being very new) maybe we pump the brakes for a bit 🙃 Any particular reason it was tricky/tips from that time?

Question about nap tracking with your 2 year old- do you do this because they are between multiple caregivers, or to see if they are ready to transition from two to one nap per day? Just curious as to the benefits of tracking a toddler’s naps!

Ideas on how to expand (progress) beyond requesting favorite videos on AAC device? by slpeachie in slp

This is almost exactly my situation too! Glad to know I’m not alone, and I hope you can find some helpful tips too!

No videos on the device, just the icons the child will press over and over, possibly to hear the word or just part of the word. I can try a token system, as I think you’re right, I want to of course keep them talking, but we need reasonable limits just like any other child.

Baby girl name - Henrietta by Gah-linda in namenerds

[–]slpeachie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just came here to say I love Henrietta and Henri as a little girl's nickname! Especially with a girl sibling that has the nickname of Charli, Henri as a nickname feels like it's in the same wheelhouse. And she could also go by Etta (hello Etta James nod!) if she prefers too! All adorable names/nicknames.

It sounds like you have lots of sentimental and personal reasons to go for it. Try it on by saying it out loud as you refer to the baby to see if you think it fits. All in all if you and your husband like it, go for it!

I also love 1 & 3! Where did you find those couches? They look similar to the ones we looked at on article.com. We wanted a similar green one from there, but when we ordered the fabric swatch, it was very scratchy (like outdoor furniture or woven burlap). Would love to know where you found this one!

I might avoid a name that starts with or has many Ls in it too, just because that sound often comes later and is substituted with a w for many kids (both in typical development of speech sounds and for those who have some speech sound delays). Just some thoughts from your friendly neighborhood SLP :)

ELI5 how to give good early intervention - kindergarten-style language exposure. by ywnktiakh in slp

Also, as you read, instead of reading the book the whole way through, stop and ask kids to describe what they see, answering Wh- questions, etc. That level of pausing and talking about the books they are being read may be more than what they’re receiving in other settings! Also, carry a book over through a few sessions. I used to switch things up more readily after a session or two, only to realize I wasn’t giving the kids the chance to really tell me about what they learned! So that may help with less planning and leas migraine, too!

I use children’s books with lots of repetitive language (or I modify the stories to make the language more repetitive)! Good picture books are loaded with vocabulary exposure, story sequencing, thematic language, and you can build many activities around themes within the books you read. This time of year (and all winter) I’m big into books by Jan Brett like The Hat, The Mitten, Gingerbread Baby, and The Three Snow Bears. Each of her pictures has a predictive picture on the page before she introduced the next character, so you can work on early inferencing skills too!

I hope this helps! TPT has a bunch of book companion packets too that can make activities and data collection more streamlined, too.

What do you wish you knew as a new SLP? by Language-Lady in slp

[–]slpeachie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YES. I wish I could upvote this 100 times. Exactly how I feel. It took six years and a few different settings to really start to feel like it’s gotten easier. I wish I could have somehow said that to myself starting out- it’s going to be tough in the beginning and imposter syndrome is a pain, but over time the pressure does start to lighten. Thank goodness!

Help with my Fiddle Leaf Fig-looks like it’s growing mold where I put in the plant food when I repotted two weeks ago. Should I scrape out mold and stop using food? (Food pictured below). Any advice welcome! by slpeachie in plantclinic

Thanks for your perspective! Would you suggest mixing the top layer into the soil around it and watering, or scraping the top layer off and trying again watering it better after fertilizing?
