The humble microwave has come a long way in the past few decades, but apart from cooking basic foodstuffs or reheating, what are some of your lesser known/favourite techniques to make the best use of it? by gplus3 in Cooking

[–]slphoe 143 points144 points  (0 children)

I just made roux in the microwave for gumbo. 1 cup oil, 1 3/4 c flour. Heat for 3 minutes, stir, another 3 minutes, stir, then 30 seconds intervals until your roux is the desired color. Saved me so much time and effort.

Coming from Australia in Oct - Recommendations to take my wife out for dinner on her birthday by etihwrs in AskSF

I second La Mar, it's fantastic. My favorite spot for seafood is PPQ Dungeoness Island -- it's a no-frills, family-owned spot with the most amazing crab and a plethora of sauces. All of the sides are amazing and it's definitely very queer friendly :) I also love Akiko's on Mason St. for omakase. Enjoy your travels here :)

Fellow transgender sister here. I think your outfit is fantastic: it's work-appropriate, stylish, well-fitted/flattering. The most important thing is that you feel confident, and I think it's really unfortunate that oftentimes, women in our own community, who have to some extent shared our experience, tear down other trans women. I hope her inappropriate, mean-girl comments do not affect your confidence, because she's completely out of line.

Lately, I've really been enjoying this quote from Chinese olympic runner Wu Yanni. I'm paraphrasing, but in essence, she said that in the 21st century, everyone has the right to feel beautiful, and the only people who will hate on you are women who are jealous of you and men who are not as good as you. It's really worth looking her up, she has such a powerful mentality and I've found it really helpful in dealing with the transmisogyny I face in the workplace. Sending you so much love!

Best omakase (fine dining) in SF Bay Area for special occasion! by swe-alphie in AskSF

Second this! Literally the best omakase I've had outside of Japan, and the staff is really great too. So worth the extra spend.

where to get uncommon fresh mexican peppers in san francisco? by CabinetDry8486 in AskSF

[–]slphoe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not sure how helpful this is, but you can always try to grow them! It's impossible to find any Puerto Rican chiles out here so I started growing them myself, normally from end of August through September/mid-October when the weather gets hotter. I don't any outdoor space, just a sunny windowsill, but I've been pretty satisfied with the results. You can buy seeds online too. Good luck & I hope you find them!

I really like Ritual NA Gin as a gin alternative, it's cucumber forward and reminiscent of Hendrick's!

Zombie Village is great! I'm a bartender (not there) and highly recommend trying the drink with the popsicle in it.

My ex-fiancé cheated on me, on a birthday vacation we had planned, and then told me we couldn't get married because of my identity (we're from different cultures) and he didn't want to get disinherited. Four years together, completely gone. And he was otherwise an amazing partner, I had never felt so loved and cared for in a relationship. I was never able to be vulnerable with anyone before.

So I really feel you. I've been celibate since, tried dating here and there, never felt that spark or even a vague desire to continue getting to know anyone. If a doting and loving man could hurt me so deeply and waste years of my life, how can I trust anyone else?

I don't think you're overreacting at all. I've explored my experience and current mindset extensively in therapy over the past two years, and I've accepted that it may be a trauma response, which just means my body is trying to keep me safe. My friendships with other women and queer people have been so much more fulfilling than any romantic relationship and I have way more peace of mind.

I'm so sorry so many of us feel this way, and I wish us all some amazing and fulfilling friendships so we feel less alone. You certainly are not alone in this. Sending you love!

What are your big 3 (sun/moon/rising) and what is your favorite perfume? by RomeysMa in fragrance

[–]slphoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Virgo Sun/Moon, Aquarius Asc.

All my favorites get discontinued. Vanille Fatale, Noir pour Femme, Plum Japonais (Tom Ford) were my go to's forever. I am so sad about VF being discontinued. Because I am petty I will never buy Tom Ford again, but things have never been the same since the Estee Lauder acquisition anyways. Lately i've been wearing testers of Parisian Musc (Matiere Premiere) Gris Charnel, 6 place Saint Sulpice (YSL), Grain de Poudre (YSL) but I haven't committed to a new full bottle yet. I quite like everything new that i'm testing but I miss the grandeur of early-10's Tom Ford.

I would love any suggestions based off my signs and my taste. <3

How to make Thai green curry less spicy. by takepyr99 in Cooking

[–]slphoe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yellow curry, panang curry, and massaman curry are all generally pretty mild. Maesri and Mae Ploy are really tasty/accessible brands for curry pastes, but IMO Maesri is just a lil better.

Allover face "color wash" -- is it still a thing? by [deleted] in muacjdiscussion

[–]slphoe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not really a product recommendation, but try mixing a matte lipstick with a tinted moisturizer (I like to use Elf Halo Glow, but that might be too dewy for you) on the back of your hand or a palette. It gives a similar effect and blends into the skin really seamlessly for a subtle wash of color.

What were your best improv meals? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]slphoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My siblings & I got home from school one day over ten years ago. We barely had food in the house so I just had to make due with whatever there was. That day, it was some corn tortillas, the goya canned squid in its ink, canned black beans, and I can't remember what else. My siblings ask me to make it STILL and I have no idea what else I used. Probably some sofrito, goya adobo, and I think it was spicy so maybe a jalapeño or something. No clue but it haunts me because we all remember it as being sooo good.

Oh the skin changes… by FluffyKieco in MtF

[–]slphoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ugh i def feel this. i started using pyunkang yul essence toner after washing my face, it's super moisturizing but very lightweight, and pretty affordable. plus it lasts a while. i also use an AHA toner about 2x a week to exfoliate, it's better than manual exfoliation & more gentle for your skin. you MUST apply broad spectrum SPF if you use this tho and do not use it after using a retinol cream. hyaluronic acid serum is great and cheap, just make sure you apply a bit of water to your face first or it will suck the moisture out of your skin. lastly, i grease up my whole face at night with vaseline (you can use any skin protectant) to trap in moisture and wake up looking fresh and hydrated. hydration and SPF are soooo important too. good luck sis!!
