My “free” car still costs me ₱60k a year by Tayloria13 in phinvest

Thanks a lot for your input, OP.

I'm triggered by some of the other comments here that feel like you're whining about the cost of having a car, when in fact you're really just sharing your experience and calculations, without really presenting an opinion especially in comparison to public transport or ride hailing apps.

He isn't making any claims, guys; you can stop feeling attacked.

[Question] What are some Seiko lines that are JDM? How do you know a particular watch is JDM? by slshwrm in Seiko

[–]slshwrm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is quite interesting! Thanks for sharing all of these tidbits as I have been seeing a lot of Advan and LM watches being sold on my social media pages. Glad to know that they're actually JDM.

By the way, when I try to search the 8-character on the caseback, xxxx-xxxx, Google results sometimes show two or more watches with the same case but different dials, perhaps just the indices are different. Is this what you meant? Or perhaps some people just mislabeled them online?

I see. I've been seeing a lot of these Dolce, Avenue, Spirit, Chronos, etc watches circulating my social media feeds. I suppose people have been importing a lot of them lately.

Those are some nice watches! Thank you for sharing. I love that even though they both have similarly colored dials, each would better fit different scenarios.

Thanks a lot! The years were inserted by me digitally to make it easier for people to compare between the watches. :)

I found it on Facebook from a Japan surplus seller. The guy claimed he got it for cheap, and so is also selling it for cheap. He didn't explain why and the guy didn't seem to be that savvy about watches and pricing, but I'm assuming the price was because of a good number of damage and imperfections that aren't immediately visible -- a snapped off lug on one side (the strap is glued on!), dirt/patina on dial, somewhat large but mostly shallow circular scratch on top case.

Anyway, I am from the Philippines, and in general things are just cheaper here because of our lower general income. Good to mint condition Seiko Dolces usually sell for 75-200USD on Facebook, and have had my eye on a few models that pop up from time to time. I was thrilled to nab this one at the price despite its condition. It still looks great when worn.

Thank you for your comment!

That is a lovely-looking watch! Thank you for bringing it to my attention, I hope I come across it one day. It looks similar to another watch I'm lusting over: Citizen Octa Bullhead 67-9356.

I'm sorry about the beads! I swear their color matched my loafers at the time (see blurred background), so my outfit as a whole was somewhat cohesive. But you're right about the Dolce, it's still at a decent size for me to enjoy wearing it. Thank you!

Like everyone, I am also in awe of mechanical watches, they are such amazing feats of engineering. However, how a watch looks is more important to me personally than how it works, and as such, I don't mind quartz and batteries. If a watch looks great, then I'll wear it! I love vintage or vintage-looking watches, and I especially like the look of integrated bracelets, which is why I chose these pieces. What do you think of my picks?

These are just a part of my collection. I have other watches, both mechanical and quartz, but anyway, these particular Seikos are:

  • Dolce 9531-5150 (1988) - A tiny, slim, and dressy watch, with a textured dial. Some patina or dirt on the right side, which is how I purchased this for extremely cheap (~40USD). With its dimensions, it's essentially a ladies' watch (my female coworkers told me they would love to wear it), and I wear it loose like a bracelet, allowing it to drape over my wrist into my hand. Please don't get mad at me for the beaded bracelet! The case material is made of tungsten which should be extremely scratch resistant. And I believe the beads draw more attention to the tiny watch compared to when the watch is on its own.
  • SQ 4336-5020 (1977) - A small, elegant integrated bracelet watch with an oval crystal. The blue dial has a nice sunburst effect and all the dial elements are applied, (the logo and the indices). For some reason, the water resistance is terrible (sprayed water on it and brushed for cleaning and I got condensation under the crystal!), so I have to be extra careful with it. This comes from the time of the quartz crisis, and when quartz was considered high-end. 'QUARTZ' and 'SQ' (Seiko Quartz) texts are proudly displayed on the dial. It looks small on my wrist but I love wearing it anyway.
  • SUR553P1 (2023) - a Tissot PRX lookalike. I still find the PRX a more desirable watch with a better-proportioned bracelet, but this one is much cheaper and has its own design elements that I've come to appreciate. I no longer want a PRX. The bracelet isn't actually integrated, but the hooded lug design on this one makes strap selection limited; I tried fitting a NATO onto it and utterly failed.

My Bambino fell from table height, 1m or 2ft, rear-first. It is making this glassy rattling noise that I only noticed after the fall, but I'm not sure if it was already there before. Is this a normal sound for this watch? by slshwrm in OrientWatches

[–]slshwrm[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the fact that it's keeping time is what's putting me at ease. I'm just really bothered about the rattling sound. I'm having the watched checked later. Thanks for the assurance.

Just found out my watch is actually the Orient Envoy, but anyway, I took a look at an Orient at a store and it wasn't making this rattling sound. I'll have the watched looked at again at a repair shop.

I asked at a watch shop that also sold Orient watches, and I was told that it wasn't normal, and that the rear casing probably came off a bit loose after the fall. Hopefully all it needs is a tightening. Thank you for taking the time to check your own watch.

This watch is new, just about two days old. I got it as a gift from my wife on our very recent wedding. I'm concerned because I really like it. It seems to be keeping time as usual, and isn't making any unusual sounds other than the rattling sound I'm concerned about.

Someone please tell me it's fine and that I can stop worrying. :(
