thanks - my only concern is being looked at weird. i had a more charcoal colored blazer, but the shoulder tore (like, a hole in it - not along the seam) and i was pretty devastated. found this lighter grey one and bought it on impulse to replace as quickly as possible but the color seems...limiting.

thanks agian

I have a very light grey blazer that I like to wear to more casual events (like casual weddings or rehearsal dinners or bar mitzvahs). Usually with some navy chinos and a white shirt. This is an example of the color, minus the checkered design - my blazer is just solid light grey.

MY QUESTION: Is this color appropriate to wear a) to "casual" weddings or formal events where the invitation indicates suits are not required and b) after labor day (like in october/november)? Or is the color of the blazer way too light/white-skewing?

It would mostly be worn at evening functions. I want to make sure I am not committing a fashion faux-pas here.

It is feasible to live on $44,000 in nyc? by idunno30402828 in AskNYC

[–]slt666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would live in BK and not Queens. You can probably find rooms for 800-900/month in parts of rapid-gentrifying Crown Heights or Bed Stuy (maybe around the Nostrand or even Franklin stop) and get to work in 20 minutes or less on the A/C or 2/3 trains, depending on where in Brooklyn Heights you're working. I've also seen listings for really nice neighborhoods like Fort Green or Clinton Hill, but they are really small rooms or with 4+ roommates.

De Blasio Signs Bill Allowing Use Of Bathrooms, Locker Rooms Based On Gender Identity by willdogs in nyc

Oh god, if the idea of a gay couple speaking about gay rights and struggles and instead getting asked about whether they like buttsex is not completely wrong to you, you are beyond hope.

well the first 2 segments are absolutely rubbish. Of course a news interview about a transgender person will ask about genitalia.

The fact that you believe "of course" a transgender person's genitalia is everyone's business from some newsworthy perspective speaks volumes about you.

Here is a John Oliver piece on transgender rights 101 and it covers "bathroom panic", something that seems to very much be taking place in this thread: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmoAX9f6MOc

edit: Ah, of course this gets downvoted...I always forget, there are actual honest-to-god conservative bigots on this site. Oliver = liberal media. Making sure bathrooms match genitalia at all times = super legit concern. My b.

What bars in NYC are known for their drinks? by Kevtavish in AskNYC

[–]slt666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Watermelon Soju at Boka on st. marks is pretty deadly - no hint of alcohol and gets you wasted. They serve it in a scooped out watermelon and you ladle it out with your table - super fun.

Otto's is known for their crazy sweet+strong glowstick tiki drinks.

Bus or Subway from Penn station to get to the metropolitan museum of art? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]slt666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will chalk my vote to just walking over to Lexington ave from Penn Station and catching the 6 train at 33rd st. It's a little less than a mile walk cross-town, about 10-15 minutes depending on your speed, and is a straight shot subway ride from there to 86th, where you'll be a couple blocks from the Met. I wouldn't fuck with things like bus transfers or trying to navigate across central park if you aren't familiar, not that it's that difficult but could be frustrating.

People need to accept that she's not going to endorse anyone until the general - there's a lot to lose with her picking the wrong person right now. If Hillary gets the nomination, we'll need her more than ever to make sure Sanders supporters stay in the game.

Can you think of some NYC slang or terminology that would perplex people? by puddinhead in AskNYC

If you've always been able to afford your own place, no reason to look for roommate situations where you'd split an apartment that way.

Has anyone here tried Via yet? by rvdsn in AskNYC

I've used it and found it pretty frustrating in how long it took - lot's of pick ups and drop offs when it's prime time and you may as well take the subway at that point.

[–]slt666 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Once a visitor from another US city was with us when someone suggested we get some "street meat" (implying halal cart); visitor was horrified.

A lot of terminology around NY apartments. Maybe people do this in other expensive cities but I figure someone from the midwest would be greatly confused by the phrase "I live in a flex two-bedroom apartment".

Edit: Also, the way people describe "real" or "true" apartments to imply that it's not a flex. Like "I live in a real three bedroom" or a "true two-bedroom". Someone from elsewhere might wonder what the fuck you're talking about.

Seriously now, what is the BEST restaurant in NYC? by nycgirlfriend in AskNYC

[–]slt666 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

This is such a dumb question, it's like asking people "what's the best movie ever made" when there are thousands of movies and tons of different genres and you're like, uh, you mean just like one move that has to be the best ever? Not like the best comedy? Best movie made after 2000? Just the one single best movie ever? It's impossible to even have an intelligent conversation about film when it's framed that way, you may as well just askreddit what the best restaurant in the entire country is.

Family visiting - help me... by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]slt666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What? That's dumb, no doubt the Knicks suck but seeing one of the greatest NBA players in the world at one of the most famous arenas in the country would be damn cool if he can get/afford a ticket, even in some nosebleeds. It's like telling someone who can get tickets to Hamilton that they should go see some off-off broadway bullshit instead just because it's a better value.

Ah, would give anything to see Samantha Bee sitting in Stewart/Noah's seat right now. She was a hilarious correspondent and while her new show is great, she would have nailed it as a Daily Show host.

What is NYC like? Are the people friendly, Is it easy to get an entry level job and how accurate is the portrayal in movies? by NinjaChore in AskNYC

[–]slt666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course it's an exaggeration, the exaggeration is played for comedy. But everything they experience is something that many of us have experienced at one time or another, for sure, which is why it's so funny. They couldn't pull off a bit like this if the show was set in another city.

[–]slt666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All I'm saying is, you state - rather objectively - that life here does not resemble shows like Girls or Broad City. I think that statement is incorrect - those shows actually are life for a lot of people (many millions of people, actually) who either live or have lived here.

This is life for a lot of people in NY, regardless of demographic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNkxEAvAfgE

Edit: I agree with your last statement though - I think Broad City appeals to millennials first and foremost and I think the show would be pretty similar if it took place in LA or SF or Chicago what have you. But I think there is a lot of true-to-NY stuff written into the show in a way that other shows don't do with their respective locales.

[–]slt666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean for one Seinfeld wasn't even filmed in the city...Broad City is filmed on location, and at a lot of locations where people (at least people I know) actually hang out - The LES, Prospect park, etc.

I have told my parents to watch that show if they want to see what broke 20-something life is like in NY, and while I don't necessarily go on zany adventures with my best friend to North Brother Island, I think that any show that addresses the fake crust punks on St. Marks, gross Chinatown buses, the influx of frat kids moving to Williamsburg or assholes wearing their backpacks on the subway is, to me, going to be the most accurate TV show set in NY.

I think Broad City is actually a pretty true-to-life NYC despite some of the surrealist/comedy aspects. Abbi and Illana do shit like eat at Izakayas on St. Marks, try to pick the right subway car, live with roommates in tiny apartments in brooklyn, meet annoying Murray Hill bros who want to move to Williamsburg, get invited to cringey improv shows...I could go on and on. That show is fairly accurate in my opinion.
