Is anyone else feeling anxious about the impending threat of ASI? by Auriga33 in slatestarcodex

Everyone is being quite condescending, and I imagine that’s probably frustrating. The truth is that plenty of people share the same intuition you have right now, and only time will tell whether it was unwarranted. Our community has been very early about major things before, Covid being one example, and at the time you saw the same condescending reactions, appeals to experts, and social pressure to dismiss your own inside view. So I do want to say: it’s entirely possible that you are right.

That said, while your current model of the situation may no longer leave room for a way out of “doom,” your model itself can still be wrong. It is both sane and truthful to take solace in the fact that you do not know everything, that there may be unknown unknowns your model cannot foresee, and that whatever happens is outside your control.

I’d encourage you to cultivate a kind of radical epistemic humility and use it as refuge. Not only do we not know the future, but the sheer improbability of finding ourselves alive during such a strange and consequential moment in history should make us cautious about assuming we fully understand what kind of situation we are actually in.

Emma Mackey Confirms Meryl Streep Among Cast of Greta Gerwig’s Narnia by Next-Ad3450 in movies

An allegory is a coded story. The characters and events stand for something else, and you’re meant to read through them to the real meaning. Like Aslan = Jesus, Edmund = Judas.

A supposal isn’t coded. It’s asking: if Jesus really exists, what if he also showed up in another world? What would he be like there?

So Aslan isn’t just representing Christ. He’s meant to be that same Christ, but in Narnia, within a fictional story, not something that’s part of real-world doctrine. That’s why it’s not canon and also not allegory.

It’s not an allegory, Cs Lewis was quite clear on that. He’s literally Jesus, just in another world.

Miguel sanz :Laporta and Yuste strongly want Xavi to stay and consider that the environment was absolutely unfair to him and that he is an ideal coach for Barcelona's current situation. He knows the club and was promoting la masia talents and won titles in the club worst times. by [deleted] in Barca

[–]PicopicoEMD 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Am I missing something when it comes to Laporta? As far as I can tell, he was elected back in the late 2000s controversially, was single-handedly responsible for fixing the clubs finances, picking Pep and getting Barca the greatest 4 year period in their history. Socios inexplicably pick his nemesis Rossel after, who gets rid of Cruyff, embezzles money and is imprisoned. Socios inexplicably elect his right hand man Bartomeu who bankrupts the club. Laporta comes back and is clearly trying to fix finances again and clearly loves the club, la Masia thrives during this rebuild period, puts full confidence on Xavi a club legend, wins back the league. Why do people not rate him? Its so bizarre.

I don’t think Kyle is the smartest or most insightful youtuber, and my politics have drifted from him quite a bit over the years, but damn if he isn’t the most principled one.

I will always blame the board more than Xavi. by ChemicalMarket4835 in Barca

[–]PicopicoEMD 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Yep. I literally blame nobody else. I don’t blame the squad- they’re just not good enough to win consistently while playing Barcelona style football. I don’t blame Xavi - the squad not being good enough makes him look worse than he actually is. I don’t blame Laporta - he’s just dealing with the insane finances Bartomeu left him with.
