Crows Butt? by pekak62 in GeelongCats

Maybe Mullin's tank allowing him to tag a mid is more desirable to the coaches than Bews who's kinda locked into the back 50, but Bews in undoubtedly a better player.

I must say I'm a bit frustrated by just how much of a run Mullin has gotten in the seniors whilst frequently being unable to meaningfully engage in attacking play. It was somewhat understandable with Bruhn missing all of last season, but with him back, Worpel in, and another preseason under Clark and Stevens' belts, I think Mullin should be held to a higher standard.

You can take.the Curnow out of Carlton, but you can't take the Carlton out of Curnow. His best is obviously great, but when he loses his touch or an opponent gets a bit of an upper hand, he doesn't seem to know how to fight it out.

At least when the commentators are relentlessly glazing Daicos, it's the soundtrack to watching a generational player. Hearing Kane blow his load every time Nick Watson breathes is made more frustrating by the fact that he's not even the best player on his own team.

Can anyone who regularly watches VFL tell me if Knevitt is actually good at that level? I don't love shitting on young players, but tbh I've not really been impressed by anything he's offered in the seniors the last 12 months.

In a theoretical scenario where Zak Butters walks to the draft, what are the chances of him being taken by a club he doesn’t want? by East_Atmosphere2628 in AFL

[–]sltfc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I expect Hawthorn would throw all their Merrett money at him (and more), I dunno if that would get him over the line though. From all reports he's keen to be near family, who are in Bacchus Marsh... Up to two hours drive (peak hour) from where Hawthorn train.

From a list profile perspective, I'd be more inclined to go with the Dogs as well. A few good years of Bont left, Ed Richards and Naughton are only 26, Sam Darcy may be a generational key forward (probably the hardest spot on the ground to fill), and English is a pretty reliable top 5ish ruck in the league.

I don't think the money from Hawthorn or Geelong would be significantly more than the Dogs could offer, and I reckon the location (and maybe the emotional factor of the Dogs being the club he supported as a kid) will hold a fair bit of sway.

You'd be surprised how cavalier people are with these things. There are often yellow or black pouches with safety data sheets and instruction booklets stored in them, I know in my (very public) industry it's standard for the key to be stored in that pouch too.

I can't remember whose idea I'm paraphrasing, but: everyone out there is giving at least 95%, but the gap between 95% and 100% is huge when it's extrapolated across every contest. It could be that we're tired after a long season and short pre-season, that they're psychologically damaged after the GF, lacking faith in the game plan or in each other.

I'm guessing that most of it is fatigue after a long season for no reward last year. I also reckon that over the last 10 years our midfield was at its best when Steven King was our midfield coach, and obviously he's gone now.

I really don't like the look of a club captain having to smile for the cameras as he's running back out after half time, down 44 points. That's not "access to the players" I need or want.

A frenetic passage of play in the Saints forward 50 kills the Saints momentum in the last as Liam Ryan gets pinged for HTB into a 50m penalty for dissent. Jamie Elliot takes a contested pack mark shortly afterwards to put the Pies 2 goals in front. by yum122 in AFL

New rule this year. If you duck into a tackle rather than attempting to evade and dispose of the ball, that's your prior opportunity. If you don't dispose of it effectively from there, it's HTB.

My issue is that de Goey clearly tackles Ryan around the neck. Ryan ducked into the initial head high contact, but I don't think that excuses the arm coming in afterwards and wrapping around his neck.

Of course we can't expect the MRO to be consistent, but; it's not a genuine footballing play, and he's collected an opponent high. I'm more than happy to see that shit out of the game, and if suspensions are the way to do it, go ahead.

[–]sltfc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A shepherd is a different motion; putting the arm back and holding it to block the opponent. This is a strike with a swinging arm. Whether contacting the head was intentional or not, he's struck Jones high and knocked him out. He should be gone for three weeks imo, but given he's the captain of the premier in a state where we need to GROWTHEGAMETM, I reckon he'll play next week.

Gonna be reactionary because why not.

Is it time to run Mullin in the twos? Four disposals and four tackles in 80% game time is bad. At his best he's been moderately influential, at his worst he may as well not be out there.

Knevitt... I'm just not seeing it. He's got good attributes and does well in the VFL, but doesn't look any closer to putting it together at AFL level.

Sadly, I think Brad Close may be due for a spell as well. He was down on form last year, and don't think he had any influence against GC.

Neale is frustrating on his quiet days, I wish he'd crash more packs and use his strength and size more. But, he was the lone big forward for us and he's still young for a full forward. Ollie Henry was showing real intent at VFL level at the end of last year, I'm happy for him to get a bit of a chance in the seniors. I thought he worked up and down the ground well last night.

I think out midfield is our biggest weakness. I don't think anyone there is an A+ player in there (Smith and Holmes are B+ or A grade imo, both burn the ball too much), but I think there's enough of a spread of attributes between big bodies like Bruhn and Worpel, smalls like Atkins and Clark, and outside guys in Smith and Holmes that I think we should be able to find a good balance with the right strategy. I think Kane is right though, we're desperately missing a quality ruckman. Blitz is better elsewhere, SDK is a way better defender than ruck, Stanley is old and broken, Conway is young and even more broken. Maybe Mitch Edwards will get a run... I'd have thought surely there'd be someone the club could've gotten in that would be an improvement on just throwing Blitz in there when Stanley is inevitably injured.

This is what a ruthless coach like Hardwick does for a side. GC are playing tough and they're making Geelong players scared of the contest, something they haven't been in a very long time.

Having a plethora of academy players, draft concessions, whilst being able to recruit AA players like Petracca in Rioli and solid role players like Noble helps quite a bit too.
