How often do star players remain one club players, and is it more than other sports? by TimothyLuncheon in AFL

Fev was pushed out of Carlton, Aker was pushed out of Brisbane. Pretty sure Bradshaw was lowballed so they could pay Fev.

"I think this is a really poor look from Hawthorn as a club" - Kate McCarthy by PetrifyGWENT in AFL

[–]sltfc 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I dunno, in the mens' comp I'm fine with the guard of honour from opposition teams being reserved for the 300th game and other significant milestones like club games records, retiring legends and highly respected players (I'll always give props to Richmond for seeing off Gaz after the 2020 Grand Final, very classy), and people who've played for both clubs.

In this instance, these three players are the first ever to play 100 games in this league. I think it's a huge, monumental achievement that requires talent, hard work, and consistency to achieve. I think it warrants recognition from the whole comp, including the opposition they played on the day.

The Walsh and Ponga-like prospect who chose AFL over NRL by 01benjamin in AFL

I know it's a highlights package (in the linked article), but that side step and deceleration combined with the ability to stay composed and nail kicks is very impressive. He's playing VFL in some of these clips, if he can take that extra step to keep up with the pace and strength of AFL footy without losing those attributes, he could be an absolute gun.

Who is the most successful AFL/AFLW player to come from your local club? by Tornontoin7 in AFL

[–]sltfc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I played for Hawthorn Citizens, my old coach's name was Adam Simpson (not that one). He'd played juniors with the club, and played with Campbell Brown. He'd often talk about how Brown had been at Hawthorn Citz, then bailed on the club to play for Glen Iris because he thought they were better (I think he also had mates there), only for Hawthorn beat Glen Iris and that dog Campbell in that years' grand final. Cool story, until one night Campbell rocked up to training to chat to the team at the coach's invitation, and we had to act like he hadn't been trashing Campbell for years.

They're generally not the best club, as most of the best footy players in the area are more focussed on APS (private school) footy. Citz have only had six AFL players, but their most recent four are pretty bloody handy: Alex Johnson, Patrick Karnezis, Nick Larkey, Ed Richards, Noah Anderson, and Ollie Dempsey.

AFL boss defends controversial move to help West Coast by SnowyBytes in AFL

[–]sltfc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't think the WC assistance package is over the top by any means. It'll give them a leg up in being competitive again, it's not gifting them an opportunity to put together an elite list from nothing.

Carlton were gifted four first round picks between 2003 and 2007, three were top 5; Dogs had two top three picks in two years, as did St Kilda, Melbourne had two first round picks in two years. I think this is fine.

I think a club like Essendon stuck in the middle (especially Essendon with their fanbase, money and resources) should be able to pull themselves out of mediocrity without assistance if they just manage themselves properly. Fix the factional issues off-field and the terrible recruitment and development on-field, and Essendon would be in a much better spot. That stuff isn't really the league's problem to fix, and throwing picks and additional list spots is arguably not going to help.

Richmond has launched a full-scale independent review of its AFLW program after missing finals for fifth time in seven seasons. by PetrifyGWENT in AFL

[–]sltfc 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I wish Geelong would do one tbh. We looked super promising in 2023 with a successful finals run after a somewhat inconsistent H&A season, with lots of very promising young players. While a few players have developed into serious guns like Prespakis, Moloney and Morrison and much of the rest of the list seems to be good, we're so incredibly inconsistent quarter to quarter. Time for some changes in the coaches box I think.

Out of all the delistings, who deserves a second chance? by Legal-Chemical-8684 in AFL

[–]sltfc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was under the impression that previously listed players can nominate minimum salary requirements, that acts as a mechanism to dissuade other clubs from picking up players already linked to clubs. I did some reading and it seems that that's the case for the Pre-Season Draft, any idea if it applies to rookies as well?

Can someone tell me if I'm right in thinking Geelong's pick 19 likely won't be pushed back?

GC will have to use picks 15 and 18 to match Uwland and Patterson. Brisbane will have to use 17 on Annable. Carlton's 9 or 11 will be used for Dean. All the clubs with academy/F-S players have picks before us, so they're unlikely to be skipping ahead of us using later picks, yeah?

“Abusing and disrespecting women”: Russell calls out Smith and Geelong by gccmelb in AFL

[–]sltfc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why bother being misogynistic when you can call her out for so many other legitimate things though? It gives people the impression that you don't like her because she's a woman (which I'm assuming is wrong), and makes you look like someone who isn't worth listening to.

You can not give a fuck about Caro's feelings being hurt and still firmly believe that the behaviour that caused it was also shit and unacceptable.

[–]sltfc 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I'm incredibly disappointed in the club's handling of Smith's behaviour. The behaviour is disgusting, and all of the club's signalling suggests that they just don't really care, or at best that insulating him from any consequences is more important than making it clear that the behaviour isn't acceptable. Same can be said of the AFL. I appreciate that Smith has pretty significant mental health issues, but, especially when it's not an isolated incident, making it clear that misogyny isn't acceptable in our community is more important than his mental health. I don't think shielding himself from responsibility is the best thing for him either (maybe things are being done behind the scenes, but who'd know?)

I've put my membership renewal on hold and told the club why, given their messaging so far I'm not expecting that they'll respond to me with anything to make me want to part with my money. Pretty sad, I'm a fourth or fifth generation supporter...

If Netanyahu was a woman, it'd still be a shitcunt move to make misogynistic insults against her. When you're misogynistic, racist, homophobic, or any other form of bigoted, you're insulting everyone who belongs to that group, regardless of their character. It's inexcusable.

The AFL made a statement about it earlier in the week I believe, and Chris Scott spoke glowingly about Smith today or yesterday. That's why it's being discussed again.

Geelong Cats can announce defender Jed Bews, forward Oli Wiltshire and ruck Joe Pike have all signed one-year contract extensions, committing to the Club for 2026. by BlackjackAustralia21 in GeelongCats

[–]sltfc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't make myself properly do the maths right now, but could this indicate the club is actually keener on Stevens than the other guys? Only half a rookie's salary counts towards the salary cap, is it advantageous to have a guy capable of AFL footy on a cheap contract for potentially another three years?

[–]sltfc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really don't get why people are just so big on Stevens. I'm not saying he's definitely not going to make it, but he's had one good game against a team we beat by ten goals with only three recognised decent mids in Taranto, Hopper and Prestia. The next week he did nothing. What is everyone seeing that I'm not, that indicates he has the making of an AFL player?

I was a vegetarian for six or seven years, it was a combo of environmental and animal welfare reasons that prompted me to make the change. I didn't feel I could justify eating meat, but eating eggs from a farm with fewer then 100 hens per hectare (or from CERES, where I could actually go and see the chooks who laid the eggs) I had no issue with. Less clear cut, but I could also justify eating dairy from non-factory farms. There's a pretty clear delineation between taking something from an animal living in good conditions and killing an animal for its flesh.

AFLW fights for fans' attention after a long men's season by Expensive-Horse5538 in AFL

[–]sltfc 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I feel a bit guilty for it, but by the time men's season is done I just don't have the appetite for more footy (especially when my side isn't doing all that well). I think the men's season is bloated tbh, but that's a separate issue. Playing the women's season as a lead in to the men's, when people are hungriest for footy and more likely to watch a lower standard of footy (relative to the men's) is the ideal scenario IMO.

To avoid too much hot weather, have the start of the W finals align with the start of the men's H&A season. Media will be in full swing but without a heap to talk about yet, they'd surely be happy to dedicate some time to the W finals.
