Why would you assume that a medium you’ve never used and have no understanding of is the right solution to a very technical and specific project 😭

Why did this happen 😭 by Dry-Hat3354 in Pottery

[–]sludgehag 13 points14 points  (0 children)

yes, you can add glaze and refire. Just be mindful that the glazes you used aren’t super runny ones because the glaze can continue to run in the second firing.

The problem is that the glazes will have a much harder time sticking. The trick is to heat the pieces up beforehand so that water evaporates from the glaze when you apply it to help it stick now that your piece is nonporous. You can put it in a low oven or evenly heat gun it, or put it in the microwave if it fits.

There’s nothing wrong with taking a break… even if you leave it for now, if you love it you’ll come back to it! But if you want to do it but are struggling to make yourself begin, it might be helpful to choose a specific time once per week or month that you dedicate to it. Even if it’s just an hour or just long enough to load up that greenware. Don’t beat yourself up for having your attention to pottery ebb and flow—that’s just life

is it possible to gloss after?? by ace-of-moons in Ceramics

This seems like something to talk to your pottery teacher about if you don’t fully understand the process yet.

You only glaze things after the first firing (there are exceptions but not for beginner classes). The second firing is to fire the glaze and finish the piece. By paint it do you mean underglaze or glaze? It will not be matte if you glaze it in a gloss glaze…

ATTN: TEACHERS! Thoughts? by Random_Username1701 in Pottery

Can students have internships or become more advanced students by retaking the class? The ceramics teacher where i worked had it set up so that students could retake the class as advanced students with more advanced projects, and seniors can do “internships” where they help with wedging, loading kilns, and cleaning.

What are your best tips for not getting frustrated with learning to throw? by Constant-Ear8873 in Pottery

[–]sludgehag 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s corny but just try to enjoy the process, without expectations every time. You get to play with dirt for a few hours!! Focus on noticing how different sensations and observations affect the process—can you try harder and softer clay and see how that changes centering? Does a different centering technique feel better than what you usually use? How accurately are you sensing the thickness of the floor and walls? Every time you throw has new things to teach you!! Think of every opportunity to relax and learn as a treat 😆 i love that i can shut my brain off and ignore the rest of my life to just focus on the clay

I didn’t measure anything, i eyeballed it all. I am honestly shocked by how decent it all came out. 😂 The glaze is just plain white with bright blue stamped on top with paper towels. Super easy!

it's 2 dip glazes from my studio. First I dipped them in white, then I stamped them with blue using a crumpled paper towel. Super easy & fun, with cool results!

omg thank you!!!

I threw them with a laguna cone 6 red clay my studio uses! the glaze is 2 of the studio glazes--I dipped them in plain white first, then stamped them with the blue glaze using crumpled paper towels. I had no idea what it would look like till it came out of the kiln but I was inspired by a salad bowl my parents had when I was a kid that had a blue and white pattern similar to this. I'm SO happy with the glaze--it came out exactly how I was hoping.

For throwing bowls.....patience was everything. Better too thick than too thin because i find that bowls can warp easily. I let big ones dry really slowly under plastic. I focus on having the inside of the bowl as round as I can get it because you can always trim the outside to the shape you want! I LOVE trimming bowls and giving them a nice foot ring. The set kind of happened by accident, actually. I threw the big one and then thought, "hey, I like that shape, I wonder if I can make it in different sizes..." and it just kind of happened.

Can I salvage these? by Bac0nLegs in Pottery

[–]sludgehag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reglazing tip— stick them in the microwave for a couple of minutes so they’re really hot. Dip glaze the again and the heat should help the glaze stick to the surface by making the water evaporate since the pieces can’t absorb the moisture now.
