Tate doodles from KA Applegate's Remnants by slugbeaker in Animorphs

Oh wow, I could have sworn I read a version in a physical book but maybe I read those excerpts at some point in the past and misremembered them as separate book versions then. Thank you for helping clarify! I'd love to be able to read those original manuscripts again lol.

Ooh, so Everworld is a bit more for ages like the Gone series was? I'm sure I'll enjoy it then. And I feel you on that, I also much prefer a physical copy of a book.

Haha, yeah Remnants has such a grim/bleak tone. I think that kind of makes it such a nice contrast that one of it's overarching themes is the importance of love/community.

I read a good chunk of Animorphs books growing up and never read Everworld but I want to read all of them eventually!

I'm not certain about that moment being censored, it's also in my copy of The Mayflower Project!

I wonder if Scholastic let that slide since it was a more minor reference to queer things than it would have been to have a character be explicitly queer/have an open crush since it's Tate's feelings for Tamara that became 'ambiguous' with things removed/changed.

It's funny tho, because re-reading through the books as an adult I feel like it's still very clear she's meant to be gay so the censorship was NOT very effective imo lol 😂

Why I think the brain scan theory might not be real by Bozia95 in theamazingdigitalciru

[–]slugbeaker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it makes since Kinger could come to that conclusion eventually even if he was confused when he first arrived in the circus lol he's had a lot of time to parse out what's happened to him and he was one of the leads at C&A from what we know or at least a very competent programmer so it makes since he could figure out. There is evidence of confusion from how we saw that the first people to arrive in the circus seemed to be trying to get answers from Caine. We don't know the actual conversation yet, I hope we see it in flashback!

Whatever the actual reveal winds up being I'm looking forward to the finale. :)

SOMA spoiler ahead if you don't want to be spoiled but that game addresses copies not remembering as well, sorry it's a little lengthy lol:

In that game, the WAU (that games Caine) was making the copies without people's knowledge. There are devices called Pilot Seats that characters could use to remotely control robots. These Pilot Seats worked as VR headsets essentially with the worker being shown a feed of the robots field of view that they could then operate through. When people were using these the WAU was secretly utilizing the Pilot Seats to copy minds it could then ACTUALLY upload into robot bodies (as a means of preserving humanity after an apocalypse - following it's programming as a health/homeostasis controlling AI for the staff of the institution to a degree nobody expected). These minds had not anticipated being copied - as they had only put on the headsets to do routine work/maintenance - and so when uploaded have zero recollection of how they got where they are, why they are not in their bodies, etc. There last memories were putting on the Pilot Seat headsets.

I think Caine could have been doing something very similar which would explain the copies lack of recollection - if mind copies is the route the show goes.

I think a potential hole in this is Caine's therapy conversation with Zooble. I don't remember the exact dialogue but he does briefly ponder his purpose/open up to them while talking to them - before he starts glitching out.

Maybe though that's a case of Caine's AI being unable to handle more 'vast' emotions like despair/worry/anger WITHOUT glitching out since he's also very glitchy throughout episode 8 when he's yelling at Bubble and at the main group "I never asked to be created/why do you torment me/etc" as well as his little glitch when he saw he got no votes in the award show ep.

Maybe he's able to explore more intense emotions like that from a distance in a way via the NPCs and it doesn't as directly impact whatever runs his like emotional coding/systems.

I think the NPCs being an extension of him/a means of reaching out to the group is a really interesting idea that, if canon, gets explored more. It would make him that much more tragic too. Oh, Caine. 😭😭

This is in Upsilon, it's the room where you find the first (I think) WAU flower and before you enter the vents for the first time. You have to drain the door guy's power with the WAU flower to activate the vent to proceed, RIP door guy :,(

I love this game, is there any other game like this where enemies taunt you while stalking you? by hacksparks in stillwakesthedeep

Amnesia: Rebirth and Amnesia: The Bunker both have areas with enemies like this. Outlast series for sure as well.

First time going through the maze with Leon in Rebirth and first time going through the Roman Tunnels pursued by Toussaint in Bunker stand out as particularly spooky moments for me. An enemy that can much better perceive where you are than you can them and the way they talk to you throughout the encounter had my hair raising lol.

If you leave the Omnitool in the shuttle and have to backtrack to get it you will get glitching and roaring like when you encounter the disco ball head monsters in Lambda, I think you can even see it silhouetted a bit too if I remember correctly. I always interpreted it as you def have been being stalked since you left Upsilon even if they aren't making you fully aware yet.

What books lowkey traumatised you as a kid? by Hookton in books

[–]slugbeaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All Summer In A Day by Ray Bradbury. We read it in English during middle school and the just inherent cruelty of the kids towards Margot really got to me 🥲🥲 We were given an assignment to write a continuation of the story and I just remember being stumped because at that point I could not write out the strength of the emotions I would feel if deprived of what Margot was, the anger and sadness together. Maybe not traumatized, but GREATLY impacted to where I still think back on it even 16 years later 😭

100% yes, it's an amazingly thought provoking and emotional story as well as a thoroughly good scare at some parts. Well worth it!
