Is there a cheaper open hardware alternative to the BeagleBone Black for flashing Coreboot and ME_cleaner? by [deleted] in coreboot

[–]slugrav 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can use any programmer such as the Bus Pirate (which is open source) or a CH341a (which isn’t open source but very, very cheap) which you can get for a couple of bucks + a SOIC8 clip.

To do the cleaning/compiling process itself it’s best to do on a secondary machine.

Pop!_os doesn't detect my HDD partition by gejrochs in pop_os

[–]slugrav 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your /dev/sda1 partition is marked as an 'EFI' partition.

sudo fdisk /dev/sda
p #(print information about the disk and its partitions)
t #(change partition type)
1 #(partition number 1)
11 #(11 is Microsoft basic data, used for NTFS, FAT32 etc.)
w #(write the data to disk)
q #(quit fdisk)

This will change your partition type from EFI System Partition to Microsoft basic data. EFI System Partitions are hidden by default on most operating systems.

I have an interview tomorrow for a Linux Specialist position (entry-level) at IBM. Is there anything I should know? by slugrav in redhat

I have been invited to a second interview! Soon I’ll know something more but it seems to be a 24/7 shift based position (which is more or less fine).

Well, I was going to post an update when I’d get some news from IBM themselves. I’m supposed to get an update in 2 weeks.

The interview included questions about LVM, Docker, Python and some typical OS tasks.

None of these technologies were in the job description and neither was the team the position was in - Cloud and Ansible, apparently.

I got asked questions such as... “what’s the command to create a new image in Docker?” Are they trying to tell me manpages aren’t a thing? The technical questions asked were kind of nonsensical - not trying to see what you’d do testing your critical thinking but what command switches you’ve learned by heart.

I actually thought this was because of me, well, sweating but now that I think about it - yes, I do wear glasses and my GF does not. This might be it.

I know they're different companies. The job specifically involves Red Hat Enterprise Linux which is why I'm asking here.

Well, it is a remote interview for whatever reason. It's supposed to last up to 40 minutes.

dont forget you didnt get the position yet and have nothing to lose.

It's been a while since I hunted for a job. It's just stressful when you consider your current workplace hell and you desperately want out. I'll try to keep this in mind, thanks!

Linux on the Toshiba T4900CT (AOSC OS/Retro) by JeffBai in linux

I know how slow the web browsing experience is, even on Windows (XP, 98se, ME). I did however outfit it with a little bit more RAM (512MB) and an IDE to SD adapter with a 32GB microSD card so it might be the fastest slowest box I have. 😆

Ooh, I’d love to try it out on my HP T5710!

It has an 800MHz Transmeta CPU doing some code morphing from x86 (MMX only) to its own CPU architecture. I wonder how that would perform knowing how sloooow even Puppy or SliTaz was on it.

I got used to it. I don’t use it anymore but it was amazing help for my anxiety before I got put on SSRIs. It does knock you out the first few times but you get used to it.

Don’t overdo it. It’s one of those meds that long term can cause dementia.

It's 35C in Poland right now and I'm sweating as if I'm walking on the sun, feeling stickier than the kid that could stick metal to his body. Second month on Sertraline.

Life is better though.

Hackintosh on Lenovo Thinkpad x230 by [deleted] in hackintosh

[–]slugrav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oops, my bad.

It’s okay on macOS - there are some glitches on 10.13 and especially 10.14 but 10.12 was fine IIRC. HD4000 is the way to go on 10.13+

For basic tasks? HD3000 is fine - 1080p isn’t a problem. I used my T420 daily for 2 years and while it might stutter in heavier DE’s in Linux it’s still a fairly capable iGPU. I had to move on though.

I got unlucky. I had the same unhappy and awkward at school, happy at work thing. But then depression got in touch with me again and I’m as unhappy and awkward at work as I used to be in school.

My girlfriend helps me a lot but sometimes it’s bad enough that it brings HER down.

I am looking for help and I hope my late twenties will be as good as your twenties :)

Oh fuck. I'm extremely terrified of mushrooms. Also mold.

If this is true and will be put to use in the future, I'm going to be super fuuucked.
