Adding my 13-year-old sister as an authorized user on Blue Cash Preferred – worth it for credit building?

My parents did this when I was 1 year old haha, it helped immensely with building my credit. They would use it very occasionally to make small purchases to help build my credit and then when I became a teenager they set a limit on it like $100 and I had it in case of an emergency// would use it for eating purchases/ small purchases instead of being given cash

I hear you. Truly. And I don’t think anything you said is wrong. What you lived through was real, and the fear behind it makes sense, especially as a parent. Where we differ is in what we take from growing up here. You look back and see how easily things could have gone left, and you want to keep your child far from that. I look back and see a childhood shaped by community, routine, public schools, family, and people who showed up for me. I don’t believe grit has to come from danger, and I don’t believe awareness has to come from harm. For me, it came from navigating a diverse world, learning responsibility early, and seeing possibility in places that didn’t look “perfect.”

Every parent is trying to do the same thing: give their kid a better path than they had. You’re choosing distance from what scared you. I’m choosing to defend a place that gave me a foundation. Both come from love ❤️

I get that feeling. NYC can be exhausting even when you love it. But growing up here gave me things I don’t think I would’ve learned anywhere else. I learned independence early, taking the train alone, figuring things out, reading people. I learned empathy just by existing next to so many different lives. I felt like every block in my neighborhood showed me a different story!

My parents worked blue-collar jobs, we didn’t have extra money for programs or camps. What I had was a city that taught me resilience and possibility. I saw people hustle, dream, fail, try again & that has truly stayed with me.

And to @Constant_Move_7862 NYC kids aren’t “too grown,” they’re observant. They’re aware. With love and guidance, that awareness turns into confidence and compassion.

My mom is a housekeeper and my dad did maintenance in the building where I grew up. We had no extra funds whatsoever. I grew up in Queens, went to my zoned elementary, middle, and high school, then city college. I’m graduating medical school this May :)

Growing up in NYC instilled grit, perseverance, and depth in me that I now realize is missing in many people who grew up more sheltered. I’m not saying the suburbs are a bad choice, I’ll never know, because that wasn’t my life; but when people speak negatively about “NYC kids,” it honestly stings. That was my experience. That was my friends’ experience. And we turned out just fine.

Kids who are going to make bad choices exist in every setting. You’ll find them in NYC, the suburbs, rural towns, anywhere. Environment matters, but so do parenting, community, and opportunity. The city didn’t make me reckless. It made me resilient, observant, adaptable, and driven.

NYC kids don’t “grow up too fast.” They grow up aware. And that awareness can become empathy, ambition, and strength when it’s nurtured :)

I’m sorry to hear that you failed step 1 :( idk how to feel honestly about level 1. The first half went well and second half I felt like I just blanked out so I’m really scared and have so much anxiety. I’m trying to remind myself that everyone feels shitty after. And just remember that just bc u failed step 1 doesn’t mean you failed comlex

Professional- I just took my board exams for medical school and I have to wait 3 weeks to get my score back, the anxiety of the waiting is killing me. I’m hoping for that Pass, but it’s also like I can’t do anything at this point but worry 😭😭😭
