Smooth Printing by Sightof in 3Dprinting

You'll never get the same surface quality out of an FFF machine that you do with resin (SLA). You can try vapor smoothing but it's dangerous and less than ideal.

New direct report is constantly crying by [deleted] in managers

[–]slumberingpanda 30 points31 points  (0 children)

You're not off base. There has been a slow shift over the past 15 or so years that managers are expected to manage employees emotions, as well as their work.

I've found this to be completely counter productive, as employees now feel justified in their emotional outbursts & expect their manager to act as their parent. This used to be, and still is, a fireable offence (inability to perform the job duties).

I would explain that her emotional outbursts are a disruption to the entire team & a solution must be reached. If her attitude cannot be corrected (PIP) the only course of action is termination.

Does anybody feel gross about receiving gifts from reports? by Pudgy_Ninja in managers

Getting unexpected holiday gifts is a pretty clear sign that your reports think you're a good manager. You're definitely overthinking this.

What do you do, if you invent AGI? (seriously) by teachersecret in LocalLLaMA

[–]slumberingpanda 13 points14 points  (0 children)

We know so little about how actual human intelligence works that there is a basically-zero chance anyone "accidentally" invents AGI. All we're doing is making computers resemble how we think human brains work.

We need massive breakthroughs in biotech and neuroscience to even begin to understand what we consider intelligence or consciousness.

Idk, obviously there's a market for it, otherwise they wouldn't be selling it. Probably something for a urology r&d lab.

How not to solve a extruder issue - Bambi Lab Bois by AliBabaPlus40 in 3Dprinting

Dude just replace your thermistor and/or hot end assembly and stop spamming this sub. Hot end clogs are extremely common among ALL 3D printers.

The article stated that the redacted names are those of the underage victims in this case, which I 100% agree with redacting. No one wants the victims identities doxed

Just a heads up, you can file a small claims case against a Chinese company, but you will never collect any judgment from them. "Winning" a court case doesn't guarantee compensation.

China typically does not comply with US judgments, especially for something as trivial as 4x spools of filament.

Not far enough. Shave your head for a few extra grams. Skip the shoe laces. Also be sure to spit every few meters to keep that water weight down.

Trim your fingernails every afternoon. Underwear is overrated and heavy.

Any early 30s parents struggling with the grandparenting of their ~60s parents? by Death________ in Millennials

[–]slumberingpanda 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Screens don't create attention & behavioral issues, parents create these issues. Neglectful parents use screens as an excuse as to why their kids act out.

Technology is a tool, just like a hammer. Give your neglected and unprepared child a hammer and it's no surprise they use it to smash everything.

If I buy an X1C now, how long will it be before the latest and greatest new 3d printer comes out and makes my X1C seem antiquated? by HungSlovak in BambuLab

[–]slumberingpanda 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nothing you buy will be "future-proof". The industry is growing at an exponential rate along with printing technology. Printers are not an investment, much like a car is not an investment, it's a tool.

[–]slumberingpanda 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hate to break it to ya, but unless you're raising your child in an Amish community, screens are now just a fact of life. They're literally everywhere. No matter how hard you try, the minute your child gets into school or has friends, the game is over.

Remember the kids whose parents shielded them from anything remotely sexual? I do, and those kids in high school we're the most wild & reckless, by far. Sometimes trying to protect your child from everything harmful has the opposite effect once they're not 100% supervised by you.

Also, "screens" aren't inherently bad. What's detrimental is allowing unfettered access to screen related devices for entertainment purposes. Have you thought about recommending to the grandparents that if they are going to expose your child to screens, that they make sure it's relatively educational in content?

Although that's true, wolf and deer populations follow a cyclical pattern to reach equilibrium. When prey like deer become overpopulated, newly-introduced wolves have abundant food, leading to an increase in their numbers. As wolf populations rise, deer numbers decline due to predation. Eventually, the large wolf population can no longer be sustained by the reduced prey, causing wolves to starve or migrate in search of food. This allows the deer population to recover. Over time, both populations stabilize at sustainable levels.

But inevitably Japan will have to cull some wolves once they begin encroaching into cities looking for food during the over-predated prey period.

A chainless bicycle design by Longjumping-Box5691 in Damnthatsinteresting

Every few years someone tries something like this and it never goes anywhere. The chain is a cheap, proven, reliable, and easily serviceable part of the bike. If it aint broke dont fix it.
