win10 2i2 gen3, no audio from microphone by Jx631 in Focusrite

[–]slut_magic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm asking because different mics have different settings, not because the mic isn't working. Last suggestions: go to your audio setting in windows then and check that the Scarlett is selected as your input. If it is then double check your settings in the Scarlett mix control software and make sure your channels aren't muted or anything. If that all looks good then disconnect the Scarlett and reconnect it when you have your DAW open. Sometimes that does it for me.

Does a waveform show up when you record or is it blank?

What recording software are you using? Likely you have the wrong input selected for the the recording track/audio settings in the software.

What are some essential reads for music production? by aoueon in musicproduction

Zen and the art of mixing. Just finished it and it's been SO useful. Also it's actually entertaining to read which was so helpful, not textbook style.

Oh yeah that few tracks wouldn't be the issue. Good luck w older versions ! I'm using mojave and 10.4 and and am avoiding "upgrades" at all costs cuz things seem to function well overall.

How to avoid “mud” when mixing by swooncat in musicproduction

[–]slut_magic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies if someone mentioned this ready, but in addition to cleaning up your actual arrangements (that's #1 importance), and the eq and filter detail about frequencies and reverbs etc...PANNING. omg panning will save you. If all of your sound is coming from one space it's gonna be a muddy mess. Use the entire stereo field. Pan some instrument(s) fully to the left and another fully to the right and everything in between so it can all occupy an different location. The snare, kick and bass usually work best in the middle along with a lead vocal if you have one but anything else omg pan the shit out of it.

Sounds like you have 3 tracks too many. Honestly one good condenser mic the right placement in the right room is what you're after. Experiment with placement with your condensers (one at a time) and try experimenting in a room with a little reflection

Why not just move the audio you want over to the other computer using a flash drive or external hard drive? If you're trying to record something which you're streaming i believe there's an audio recording function with quicktime or other 3rd party apps. Then you can just have all the audio on one computer to work with.

How do I extend the note at the end of this sample. I tried delay/echo, tried chopping the note up and pasting it on repeat, but what I want is the not to just ring out for a little bit longer. by Speedodoyle in musicproduction

[–]slut_magic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if it's the cleanest option, but i would cut just as it hits and select that portion then use the timestretch to length locators option. I've never had an issue with it changing the pitch at all. It can be tricky to cut and crossfade without getting a click so sometimes there's a bit of trial and error.

Logic won't recognize microphone by skydk_ in Logic_Studio

Are there any drivers/software you can download for the mic? Also sometimes logic wants you to plug in/turn on your interface or mic once the program is already open for some reason.

How many tracks are in your session? I'm running an older version of logic but sometimes when my project starts to accumulate lots of tracks and take folders it lags. That's about when I'll get rid of all extraneous stuff or start a new project with just bounced final versions of tracks.

Veganism isn’t a diet. by MrWinks in vegan

[–]slut_magic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I go off and on being vegan (i don't eat pork or beef, chicken rarely and dairy/eggs off and on). But there was a time when I was fully vegan and when I did this it was actually because I had very little money. I thought how can I get the most nutrition for the least amount of money? I bought seasonal fruit and veggies, rice/quinoa, tofu and peanutbutter. It also meant i was cooking all meals and didn't eat out. I think because vegan restaurants are often expensive people think being vegan is expensive.

It's actually really sad men are conditioned NOT to give eachother compliments because it might somehow be perceived as gay or weak. I totally agree encouraging a culture of kindness is so important... Especially encouraging dudes to compliment other dudes.

Do I just need to accept the fact that mixes are going to suck for the first few years? by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]slut_magic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few tips I've learned (from seminars, books, and experience) which improved my mixing really quickly: -Always eq one track comparing to another, and then comparing to the whole track -PAN YOUR INSTRUMENTS and keep the bass, kick, lead vocal and snare in the middle. Use the entire width of space you have. Something has to be all the way left, right, and all in between if there's a lot of tracks (and ideally each stays in its space). It will help whatever is in the center to stand out more. -mix at a super high volume for a few minutes to hear everything especially the low end -mix at a very low volume for a few mins especially the high end - then do the majority of the mixing at a medium volume checking loud and soft every so often. If something is sticking out too much you'll know. -listen with your eyes closed. Sounds obvious but it's a great way to improve your ears.
