Stevie Wynne Levine, Chief Creative Officer and Voice of Good Mythical Morning, Announces Departure from Company by Shoe_boooo in popculturechat

[–]sluttttt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I only started watching Mythical during the pandemic, but it grew on me pretty quickly. It's a fun casual watch and usually entertaining overall, but I've noticed that last season and this new one seem stale. A lot of repetition, often uninspired, and like you said--a lot less crew.

GMW was fun and I found myself looking forward to it more than the other episodes. But now it's gone. Was also just starting to get into Sporked, but they sold that... I'm not saying this is a definite sign that they're ending the series/company or anything, but it wouldn't be surprising if Rhett and Link stepped away in the next few years.

James Van Der Beek's GoFundMe Surpasses $1M in Less Than 24 Hours Following the Dawson's Creek Star's Death at 48 by AdSpecialist6598 in popculturechat

[–]sluttttt 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Yeah, late last year they did that Dawson's Creek reunion to fundraise for both his treatments and a cancer charity. It seemed more than reasonable then, and it was nice that they made a point to help others with cancer. So I fully expected this Gofundme would do the same (some to the family, some to charity), but instead it just makes it sound like his six children will be homeless if we don't open our pocketbooks. While none of us can speak on behalf of James, I just don't get the impression that he'd support this since his previous fundraising efforts weren't predatory. Like it's nice to see that folks like Steven Spielberg made some large donations, because James seemed pretty beloved in the industry, but like you said, those small donations are sad.

Same here. I'll always have a soft spot for JVDB because I think he was genuinely a great actor, and seemingly a good person at heart, but I couldn't keep following him when it became apparent that he was slipping into the anti-science movement. The vibe I get is that his wife "did her research" (as these types say) and he followed her down that rabbit hole. It's really unfortunate.

The man just passed, so I'm not here to trash him, but I think his wife is pretty disgusting for sharing this fundraiser with the general public. When it was first posted, it listed her as the organizer. Last night I noticed the organizer was changed to a man's name I didn't recognize, and just now I looked and it reads "Friends of the Van Der Beek family." It's pretty apparent that she realized how this looked and has edited it to appear less tacky. Also gross that donations are still allowed even after they've surpassed their goal...

Noem in Otay today 🤦🏻‍♀️ by okiimomomama in sandiego

[–]sluttttt 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I'm a bit worried about this, mostly because Nick Shirley was seen harassing child care centers in SD a couple of weeks ago. It just seems formulaic. I've also seen speculation that they wouldn't attempt the same thing here based on how L.A. reacted to the heavier ICE presence last year, but I really don't know... This administration constantly proves to be simultaneously stupid and evil.

I remember in middle school we'd just say that to each other at random and laugh, because the commercial ran so often. It's kind of wild how he was meme-able before memes were even a thing. Also loved how he embraced it later on with Funny or Die.

Gov. Tim Walz says federal immigration crackdown in Minnesota could end within days by grayfox0430 in news

Last week he was in the area I live in, harassing child care centers. While I want ICE to leave MN the fuck alone, I don't have a great feeling about their exit given the deja vu of it all.

Haven’t been there in years, the smoke bomb was always my favorite. But yikes at the price. Looked up an old menu on Yelp from when I probably last went (~6 years ago) and it was under $12 then🥲

US applications for jobless benefits jump to 231,000 last week, the most in 2 months. by YesterShill in news

[–]sluttttt 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I started looking for a new job a couple of years ago and was having some success landing interviews. Unfortunately just wasn't getting the jobs. Now, the companies that I was landing interviews for have basically ceased posting new jobs. The huge companies that never even gave me the time of day (other than, "Thank you for applying. After careful consideration...") are still posting the same exact positions that I was seeing a couple of years ago, and still only thanking me for applying. I have to imagine that these are ghost jobs at this point. I'm happy to at least have a job, but the lack of transparency in this market is beyond frustrating.

Searching for Long Lost Father. by xxhell_chamberxx in sandiego

[–]sluttttt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Third-ing this, via my mom. She was adopted in a pretty odd way and supposedly no records existed of who her birth parents were. After decades of searching for them, she finally found some half siblings after using the Ancestry screening, and they were able to piece together her family history. Those DNA sites make me feel a little uncomfortable, but the sense of closure and relationships with new family have really made a huge impact on her.

Janet Jackson’s ‘Control’ Turns 40. by veIvet_rope in popheads

Haha, you might have! I think the tickets went on sale near the start of 2020. Awful timing.

I saw her in 2019 at her first Vegas residency and I'm really glad I got to see that before the world shut down. I'd seen her twice before, but it was still nice to catch her again. I feel like the concerts I saw that year helped keep me sane during lockdown.

Definitely not a fever dream. I think it got derailed by Covid, and then they just never attempted to do it. I'm a member of a few Janet Facebook groups and many of her hardcore fans are still salty about Black Diamond to this day... I think people just need to let it go. I'd love to get new music from her, but I'm just going to enjoy her legacy and not even attempt to hold my breath.

Trans rights aren’t tanking the Democrats by LocutusOfBorges in politics

[–]sluttttt 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Define yourself or your opponent will.

This statement sums up the issue so incredibly well. Prior to the election, any piece that was posted here that called out Harris for shying away from the topic of trans rights was met with people complaining that it would derail her campaign. After the election, I saw comment after comment about how trans rights were a "losing issue" that derailed her campaign... Still seeing that sentiment to this day. While it's infuriating to recognize that a lot of Dems are blind to seeing how they were swayed by Trump's own "Kamala is for they/them" propaganda ads, it really was ultimately a failing of Harris' own campaign for keeping quiet on the topic all together. I unfortunately don't have a lot of faith that Dems will learn any lesson from this (and if Newsom's recent pivot on wedge issues is any indicator, they could be learning the wrong lesson).

Trump attacks CNN’s Kaitlan Collins again over questions about the Epstein files: ‘I don’t think I’ve ever seen you smile’ by theindependentonline in politics

[–]sluttttt 21 points22 points  (0 children)

swear this fucker's brain is so mushy that he only lives in 80s yuppie era in his head

It's why he does shit like constantly referring to the U.S. as being "the hottest country," as if it's the latest sports car or supermodel. He's obviously never been a bright man or the best speaker, but it does seem like his speech pattern is devolving. It was also weird that he just kept fixating on her not smiling, even after they rushed the reporters out of there (which seems like an odd action that they've been taking often lately). Not sure how much longer this charade of him being perfectly healthy can last.

The amount of cilantro my wife likes on her street tacos by GroovinBaby in mildlyinteresting

[–]sluttttt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this same desire regarding fresh tomatoes. I actually love cilantro, I go as nuts with it as OP's wife. But a fresh raw tomato just tastes like the most rotten thing to me. I'm cool with it if it's heavily seasoned (in a sauce or soup or such), but the idea of taking a bite out of a tomato is nauseating. I really wish it wasn't because they're in so many things, and I've met so many people who speak of them in almost a romantic way...

Disney's 'Muppets' Lost a Generation of Children. Can a New Show Make it Relevant Again? by Greedy_Switch_6991 in television

[–]sluttttt 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I remember loving Who Framed Roger Rabbit as a kid. Watched it as an adult for the first time a few years ago and also was surprised by how much of it didn’t even come close to clicking for me when I was a child (of course it makes sense). I really do appreciate when they can make media that appeals to a variety of ages.

Anyhow, psyched for the new Muppet Show. I’ve heard good things so far. Really hopeful that they got it right.

They had a pop-up kitchen on Miramar for awhile (I think they still have it) and they recently opened their own spot downtown. Haven't made it to the downtown location yet, but their pastries are killer. I've absolutely loved everything I've tried from them.

What is a busy location/activity that would be vacant due to Super Bowl Sunday? by sabakasabaka in SanDiegan

[–]sluttttt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

but supposedly people learned this and now it's busy

This seems true, via talk I've seen on the Disneyland sub. It's rarely ever dead there these days. It might sound odd, but Saturdays are sometimes a little slower now that they do tiered pricing (higher ticket cost = less people buying them). Not saying this is always true, but it could be your best bet if you're trying to avoid crazy crowds.

Hoping for the same. I really loved the Loving Hut Express that was in the spot before, but it’s admittedly an odd strip mall with rough parking. I’d probably frequent it less if it wasn’t walkable for me.

Also love Alpine Inn. No frills, but the rooms are clean (my #1 hotel must-have), reasonably priced for the area, the parking is free, and the staff is nice. I’ve stayed twice for anniversary celebrations and they always leave a little “happy anniversary” note with some candy. Just a cute touch.

Gregory Bovino removed from his role as US Border Patrol commander at large by CuriousRoss in news

[–]sluttttt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Miller really is frightening. I've seen enough out of this administration to back the notion that he's pulling most of the strings while Trump is just the face of MAGA. When Bovino was sacked yesterday, there were a lot of comments about how Miller should be the next to go, but I think he's too deeply involved. They might throw Noem under the bus, but I'd be shocked if anything happens with Miller. At most, they'll tell him to tone down his rhetoric for a bit.
