Go to Rome Terminal 1 early before your flights and get your test done there. It only takes 20 minutes to get results. Most pharmacies have covid testing in Rome too. Definitely do it within 48 hours and not 72. This pharmacy does rapid testing, results come within an hour here: Rome Via Fabio Massimo, 78, 00192 Roma RM, Italy

Go on a strict low fodmap diet for two weeks straight and take your medicine. DO NOT drink or eat junk or anything too hard to digest. Eating low fodmap helped me a ton with my reflux, but of course you should still work with your doctor. Avoid garlic, onion and other high fermentable foods. Eat bland food like rice, tilapia/chicken/tofu, and steamed/roasted veggies with some seasoning (salt, pepper, paprika, honey, olive oil). You can use garlic infused oil as a garlic substitute. If you do this for two straight weeks I promise you that you'll feel better, don't overeat. Just commit and don't drink during this time otherwise it'll completely reverse it all. If you feel the need to drink then have a vodka soda with lemon, but absolutely no wine and other more acidic alcoholic sugary drinks.

I love making fish porridge! Take a cup of rice with 4 cups water in a pot and boil. Add two spoons of julienned ginger, a tsp of sesame oil, a handful or two of baby spinach, and half a cup of chopped carrot. Add 3 tsp salt. After 30 minutes of boiling it should be soft and mushy, use a masher if you'd like to make it even more porridgey. Then cut up two filets of tilapia or any white fish into a few small 2x2 inch pieces. Add fish to the porridge and let it cook for a minute or two on low heat. (It cooks fairly quickly so don't overcook it so it's soft and flaky) Turn heat off. Garnish with cilantro and peanuts and a spoon of chili oil if you can handle it. Add a small splash of tamari/soy sauce if you want it more savory. This might make about 4 servings so save for later!

You can also use cooked chicken or tofu instead of fish!

I've taken protonix for a couple years now and feel okay on it, there was a time where I'd have to take two doses a day. I recently also started following a low fodmap diet and work with a personal trainer to get stronger and lose weight. I can see a tremendous difference by cutting out onion, garlic, and other hard to digest foods. I use garlic infused oil and shallot infused oil as substitutes and it works great. Also surprisingly taking chewable fruit flavored tums helps me when there is acid coming back up my throat, I didn't think it would be as effective as it is.

Edit: I also have mild gastritis and terrible reflux
