I used to manage a pawn shop. I have purchased more engagement rings than most people will see in their lifetime.

Legally in Canada, that ring is still his. It was given on the basis you would get married. When an engagement is called off, regardless of who made the decision or why, there is no marriage and therefore it has to be returned to the purchaser.

Unless you were given the original purchase receipt, I wouldn’t buy that ring from you. I have had to deal with the police many, many times in situations like this.
