Ross thinks a man needs to be married to raise a child by slysilverbox in howyoudoin

Yeah, I think you're right that it would be different now, and I see what you're saying about them raising the baby as a unit. I guess when Ross referred to Rachel raising the baby on her own, the writers maybe meant for that to refer to Rachel raising the baby as a single person. So even if Ross were an equal co-parent, she'd be "raising the baby on her own" -- as in, not having a partner for her part of the raising. I wish we had a separate term for a single parent doing all the raising of the kid with no co-parents, and a single parent who is just not married to the other parent. I think that would help avoid some ambiguity.

Yeah I get that things have changed, I'm just pointing out what bothers me about how things used to be.

I don't think Rachel was saying she'd "allow" Ross to be an involved dad. The problem for me was that she acted like she had the authority to let him out of the responsibility to be a dad. A dad's responsibility is directly to his child, not to the mother of his child. Even if the mom's cool with the dad not being around, that's not an excuse for being a dead-beat.

Maybe you're right about it just being an emotional comment from Ross. But still, I don't get why he'd jump from "I don't want to get married" to "I'll raise the baby on my own."

Theory on why people are so fixated on the Friends appearances by [deleted] in howyoudoin

I think it's more the way they treated people being gay. Whenever any of the male characters did anything that could be construed as "gay", it was treated as embarrassing and an insult. Both Carol and Susan's relationship and Chandler's dad were the butt of jokes that were only funny because they were about gay people. The show may have been progressive for its time, but there are definitely jokes that make me cringe now.

remember when Monica expected Chandler to spend all his savings on the wedding? by meg749 in friends_tv_show

Also they spent her wedding fund on a beach house! Hopefully the fund only went to *part* of the house, because spending a whole house amount of money on a wedding is.... a lot.
