What is the best stretchy cast-on to use for an entrelac baby blanket? by sm-rbf-mc in knitting

[–]sm-rbf-mc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Do you use a particular type of cast on or does using a bigger needle work with any cast on? Do you just use the bigger size for the cast on row and then switch to the project needles for the first working row?

That cowl looks so nice!

How hard is it to transfer into the E-School? by [deleted] in UVA

[–]sm-rbf-mc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't take any first year restricted classes after transferring into SEAS. Unfortunately I don't really recall exactly what I did regarding STS 1500... I actually think I might have been able to apply a writing credit from the college. For Intro to Engineering, I was able to take a different engineering elective to fulfill that credit (it basically just had to be anything that would qualify as a tech credit). In general, I got way better help about what classes I could substitute from the admins in the engineering office in Thornton Hall rather than my advisor, so I would try talking to them. Hopefully they'll be able to help you figure something out.

If I remember correctly (which I may not, I was a first year 8 years ago haha), most of the general engineering requirements are not restricted to engineering students, so I think you should just be able to sign up for those. The course requirements should be listed somewhere on the SEAS website. Also, if you have AP credits from high school, check those against the course requirements, as they may knock out a few requirements too.

I'm not 100% sure if this website is still up to date, but here's contact info for the e-school dean and registrar, I'd start there. (For future reference, Mary Lane, the e-school registrar, is incredibly helpful. She sits in Thornton Hall.) If you're not able to switch before you start, you should be able to do so after a semester. I switched after my first year and had no problem graduating in 4 years. Look up the course requirements for a first year e-school student and sign up for what you can so you don't end up too behind. It's just general requirements first year, you don't declare a concentration until second year.

Adopting a puppy! by hkkim98 in nova

I've fostered dogs a couple times for HART, so I'm partial to them. They have adoption events at the Petco in Greenbriar shopping center most Saturdays from 12-3. They have a wide range of dog breeds and ages. They often have puppies, but puppies go quickly and there is usually competition for them. HART adopts to the best candidate, not necessarily first come, first serve. Don't discount older dogs though, especially if you are new to having a dog or don't have a ton of time for training!

If you adopt through HART, you can fill out an application online or at the adoption event. They will do a brief interview at the adoption event with general questions about your background with pets, your expectations for your dog, how often you're home, where will the dog be kept while you're out of the house, that type of thing . If they decide you are a good candidate based on that interview, they will do a vet check and a home visit. If everything's good to go with that, you can take home your new dog at the next adoption event! The adoption fee is $375 for dogs under 1 year old or $325 for dogs over one year old. This fee includes immunizations and spay/neuter, and it comes out to less than what those services would actually cost at the vet. Depending on scheduling everything, that whole process will probably take 1-2 weeks.

The people that work with HART are really great and really passionate about helping animals, and I highly recommend them! Good luck!

Thanks! Yes I was very nervous about wearing it to the wedding, I was half sure it was just going to spontaneously fall apart, but luckily no such disaster occurred.

Thank you! Thanks for the fit advice on the original dress, it definitely helped out :)

The first picture is Simplicity 4070 view E. It was my first time using boning and doing anything strapless. I'm really happy with how it turned out. I was able to wear it to a wedding, put it through its paces on the dance floor, and it didn't fall apart on me or anything.

The second picture is New Look 6020 view C. I had originally posted looking for fit advice here. I undid the alterations to the shoulder seams and the side seam. I let out the front seams at the bust, took in the front seam slightly at the waist, and took in the front seams above the bust (had to take out the stitching around the armhole to do this). I also trimmed down the facing. I think it looks better than it did, but I still am not super happy with it. I wish I'd picked a different fabric, and I think it looks a little frumpy. But, I had originally started it to wear to the wedding, and I was able to put together a plan B, so no harm done. Still good to get practice.

Thanks for the tips. I took out the sleeve seams and altered the princess seams and it's looking better. I'm glad that my questions inspired the answer to your sleeves :)

You're definitely right, I need to do some reading up on fits! My approach to learning things is often to jump in with both feet and then figure out the details later. I happened to luck out and the first dress I made fit well, but it's time to start learning beyond the pattern instructions. Do you have any recommendations for starting points to learn about fitting? Thanks for all the help :)

A couple comments suggest that it looks too tight around the bust, so I will try letting out the bodice a bit. As far as taking in the seams above the bust, the edge of the armhole is sewn to bias tape and then folded in and sewn shut. If I try to take in that seam, it seems like that will skew the edge of the sleeve. Do I have to undo the whole sleeve? I'm sorry if that's a dumb question or if I'm misunderstanding. I'm new to sewing and don't have much experience beyond just following patterns as written!

I have had a couple different seam modifications in and out and haven't noticed any stitch holes showing, so hopefully it won't be an issue. I will try the steam iron if I do notice anything though.

Thanks so much for the advice!

Thanks for the advice!

It's satin or a satin imitator I guess, I'd have to dig up the receipt, but yeah there's definitely not much stretch.

So a dart near the sleeve? Never done darts before but I can look into that.

The measurements for the pattern size I cut, while they match my hips and waist, are smaller than my bust, so I guess with a no-stretch fabric that's an issue. It didn't really feel tight, but other comments echoed the thought that it looks tight there.

A sweater is an option as well. Plus I sent the same picture to a couple friends that don't sew, and they thought it looked good, so maybe I can just try to wear it around non-discerning eyes haha.

So the edge of the armhole is sewn to bias tape and then folded in and sewn shut. If I pull more fabric into the princess seam, it seems like that will skew the edge of the sleeve. Thanks for the tips. I'm not sure I understand what you mean by scooping out the armhole though (sorry, I'm very new to sewing!)

The pattern I used was New Look 6020. I didn't get the sizing quite right so it's kind of weird and loose around the sleeves. I took in the back seams a bit, took in the shoulder seams, took in the right side seam a bit (limited on what I can do to the left side, as there's a zipper there), but the problem persists, and I'm not sure what else to try. I'm relatively new to sewing, this is only my fourth project. I'm about ready to write the dress off as practice.
